First stretch of ICC will host foot race

Motorists who want a sneak peek at the new Intercounty Connector can get a glimpse of the six-lane highway before the first segment opens, but they won't need their cars.

The Maryland Transportation Authority, which will own the toll road, is holding a 5-kilometer walk/run Oct. 17 on part of the highway that has been paved. The run will begin at Shady Grove Road. Entry fees -- $25 beforehand and $30 on race day -- will benefit the Special Olympics of Maryland, authority officials said.

Registration and information about sponsoring a runner or walker are available at

The 18.8-mile east-west highway, which will run between Gaithersburg in Montgomery County and Laurel in northwestern Prince George's County, has been under construction since late 2007. The first 7.2-mile segment between Interstate 370 and Georgia Avenue is scheduled to open late this year or early next year.

The $2.5-billion highway project sparked controversy for decades. Supporters said the highway was needed to speed travel between the I-270 and I-95 corridors outside the Capital Beltway while opponents said it was too expensive and would cause too much environmental destruction.

The race fees will give people just the first taste of ponying up to access the new road--tolls will reach up to $6.15 each way for cars driving the 18.8-mile stretch.

Will the racers be charged tolls based on how long it takes them?

Is the race going to be chip timed?

Any chance of allowing bikes to ride on the other roadway (i.e, runners on the Eastbound side and bikes on the westbound side?) I'd love to see it that way!

How offensive! The Maryland Transportation Authority cynically co-opts the charitable mantle of Special Olympics to try to redeem this god-awful road. The logo is "ICC 5K Walk/Run: Connecting Communities for a Cause". Ha! Destroying communities like Redland Station and Winter's Run is more like it. For shame!
