Metro's other Columbus weekend work

A reader noted that we've been making a big deal of Metro's heavy maintenance schedule for Columbus Day weekend, which will split the Blue and Orange lines downtown. She said we shouldn't fail to point out that maintenance work will disrupt the Red and Yellow lines as well. Here are the details.

Red Line: On Columbus Day weekend, Metro will continue the much-needed repairs to the platform at Rockville. Trains in both directions will be sharing a track around the work zone. So riders between Shady Grove and Twinbrook should add at least a half hour to their travel time from 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, through the rail system's midnight closing on Monday, Oct. 11.

Yellow Line: Transit workers also will be doing some landscaping repairs at Huntington Station. Riders between the Huntington and Braddock Road stations should add at least half an hour to their travel time from 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, through closing time Monday night, Oct. 11.

If you have tickets to any of these big events and you're planning to take transit, be sure to take the delays into account: On Saturday, Oct. 9, and Monday, Oct. 11, the Capitals will play at 7 p.m. in the Verizon Center. On Saturday, DC United will play at 7:30 p.m. in RFK Stadium. On Sunday, Oct. 10, the Redskins will play at 1 p.m. in FedEx Field. Also on Sunday, there is an 8 p.m. concert at the Verizon Center.

By the way, the District has plans to close Chain Bridge over the Columbus Day weekend. This is part of the long-term maintenance project that now is supposed to be done in November. That weekend closing is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, and continue till 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 1.

What about this work which was scheduled for President's Day weekend 2010 but canceled?

Trains travel from Rosslyn to Foggy Bottom at a reduced speed for about 1/4 the tunnel length.

During the Presidents Day Holiday weekend, Metro will install two new rail switches at the Rosslyn Metrorail station. In addition to the installation of new rail switches at the Rosslyn station, Metro will replace several hundred feet of rail, 300 track fasteners, 300 anchor bolts, repair 30 water leaks, replace 550 tunnel lights for safety, clean third rail insulators and cover boards, and make track circuit upgrades at the Rosslyn Metrorail station.
