New pattern on 14th St Bridge

Mark Berman

8:40 A.M. UPDATE:

-- The new traffic pattern on the 14th Street Bridge should be in place this morning. Four lanes will be open during peak travel times (like the morning rush), and only the far left lane should be blocked during the morning. The left exit lane, Exit 10C, to the Memorial Bridge will be open so that drivers can exit before they reach the work zone. After the exit, the lane will end and traffic will need to merge right.

-- A disabled vehicle on U.S. 50 West at Kenilworth Avenue is blocking the right merge lane.

8:15 A.M. UPDATE:

-- Florida Avenue has reopened, according to the District Department of Transportation.

-- A bus accident on Pennsylvania Avenue in Southeast is blocking one westbound lane at 4th Street.

7:50 A.M. UPDATE:

-- The lanes on I-95 South have reopened in Lorton, and the exit ramp from I-95 North before the Springfield Interchange has also reopened.

7:25 A.M. UPDATE:

-- The water main break is still ongoing and will cause problems in Northwest. Avoid Florida Avenue in this area (just south of Howard University). Some possible alternative routes include Michigan Avenue (to the north, just north of Howard) and Rhode Island Avenue (to the south, but heading northeast and southwest).

-- The accident on I-95 North is still blocking the north exit ramp (exit 169B) just before the Springfield Interchange. Traffic is getting by on the right shoulder.

-- The tractor trailer accident on I-95 South in Lorton is still blocking the center and right lanes.

7 A.M. UPDATE:

Florida Avenue is down to only one lane between 5th and 6th streets NW due to a water main break.

6:40 A.M. UPDATE:

An accident on I-95 North is blocking the north exit ramp (exit 169B) just before the Springfield Interchange.

6:20 A.M. UPDATE:

-- There's debris on the Inner Loop after University Boulevard. Expect potential delays.

-- An accident on I-95 South is blocking the center and right lanes in Lorton.

Your description of the 14th Street Bridge traffic pattern (Phase 5) is not quite accurate. The far left lane does not end and cars in that lane do not have to merge with other lanes. Right after the 10C exit, the lanes shift somewhat to the right, but all traffic can proceed smoothly without any vehicles having to changes lanes.
