Va. power outage causes traffic delays
6:45 p.m. Update:
A downed transformer at a Dominion Virgina Power substation in Alexandria caused several hours of power outages during the Wednesday evening rush hour, affecting roughly 6,800 homes and causing some traffic lights to go dark.
The transformer at one of the energy company's substations went offline at about 4:35 p.m., said Le-Ha Anderson, a Dominion Virginia Power spokeswoman. Power was restored by 6:01 p.m., but, afterwards, the City of Alexandria had to reset their own traffic signals.
The cause of the outage has not been determined, Anderson said.
Drivers say traffic delays due to the outages have backed up the George Washington Parkway several miles, to Reagan National Airport.
Original post: A three-vehicle accident at Telegraph Road and Route 1 in Alexandria is causing serious delays for drivers this evening, state transportation officials said.
Power outages have been reported in the city of Alexandria east of Duke Street and Quaker Lane, extending to parts of Old Town.
Call Dominion Virginia Power at 1-866-366-4357 to report outages. Motorists are asked to drive with caution; if traffic lights are out, please treat intersections as a four-way stop, official said
Dominion Virginia Power is working on the problem.
A separate accident at Interstate 495 southbound at Interstate 66 has been moved to the left shoulder after blocking the middle lane.
