Federal Center SW Station reopens

5:59 p.m. Update: Metro reports that the station has reopened. The package has been cleared and roads in the are area reopening.

5:01 p.m. Update:

U.S. Capitol Police are investigating a suspicious package at the entrance to the Federal Center SW Metro station. The package is described as an attache case with wires coming out of it and a cell phone next to it, said Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, a spokeswoman.

Authorities were called to the scene near 3rd and C streets SW about 4:15 p.m. Police are using a robot to investigate the package, Schneider said.

Several streets are closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic, including 3rd Street between C and E streets and D Street between 2nd and 3rd streets, police said.

5 p.m. Update: Metro says shuttle service has been establisged at L'Enfant Plaza and Capitol South.

4:55 p.m. Update: Third Street between S Street and Virginia Avenue SW is also closed to traffic.

strong>4:35 p.m. Update: Metro says shuttle bus service has been established. However, shuttle buses are not available to move people as efficiently as trains. If possible, it might be better to walk to Capitol South, L'Enfant Plaza or Smithsonian stations.

Original post: A Metro spokeswoman said Federal Center SW is closed because of a suspicious package on the street. Trains are passing through the station on the Orange and Blue lines without stopping.

Thank you for providing a description of the package. So many times I read "suspicious package" and wonder if it's just somebody's lunch.

People can take the 5A bus from L'Enfant Plaza (or better yet, BEFORE L'Enfant) to Federal Center SW, too. You know those shuttle lines are gonna be long!

Trains are rolling through an empty station.
