Amtrak to take some VRE riders

Kafia Hosh

1:30 p.m. Update: VRE officials say that Amtrak 171 will accept VRE riders, stopping at all Manassas Line stations except Broad Run. Riders will not need to use a "step-up" ticket.

Here's the departure schedule for Amtrak 171:
-- Union Station: 4:50 p.m.
-- L'Enfant: 4:56 p.m.
-- Crystal City: approximately 5:02 p.m.
-- Alexandria: 5:11 p.m.

Officials warned that they expect the Amtrak train to fill up quickly.

12:55 p.m. Update:

VRE officials say CSX has removed flood restrictions affecting the Fredericksburg Line.

10:17 a.m. Update:

According to VRE officials, Dominion Power hopes to have the low hanging power lines removed by noon, but Manassas Line service is still canceled for this afternoon. Riders will be able to use the Metro option from noon to 8 p.m. by showing their VRE ticket to the station manager to enter and exit the station. However, riders must pay for parking at Metro stations.

Original post: All Manassas Line service is canceled Friday.

Low power lines in the Alexandria area are blocking the Norfolk Southern tracks and the trains from passing. Dominion Power cannot assess the situation until noon today.

Flash flood restrictions are in place for the Fredericksburg line until 7 a.m. All Fredericksburg trains operating during this time will experience significant delays of up to 45 minutes.

"Metro Option" is open. You can ride Metro for free Friday by showing your VRE ticket to the station manager. However, VRE riders are still responsible for parking fees at Metro stations.

VRE riders were informed of this at 4:56am today, Oct. 1. Dominion Power can't get to it until 12Noon?!?!?! I assume that if VRE can't move past the power lines then nothing else including Norfolk Southern freight or Amtrak can either. Is this correct?
I used the Metro option. UGH...there was trash in the car and spittle on a window!
