Conn. Ave. NW closed

By Ann Scott Tyson and Clarence Williams

7:56 p.m. Update: Farragut North is now closed, according to Metro. Shuttle buses have been requested.

7:52 p.m. Update: A Metro employee and a transit police officer told the Post's Ann Scott Tyson that Farragut North will be closed as soon as officials can clear the station of people. Tyson said they were told they will be able to board the next train.

7:40 p.m. Update: Metro Assistant General Manager Dave Kubicek told the Post's Ann Scott Tyson that "D.C. crews were working up above and they penetrated the station."

Asked if it was going to take a while to fix the problem, Kubicek said, "Absolutely."

Construction recently started this week on a raised center median on Connecticut Avenue NW between K and L streets -- a safety improvement. The work was scheduled to be completed by mid-December.

7 p.m. Update: Do to crowding at Farragut North, you may want to try one of the next stations on the line, Dupont Circle or Metro Center.

6:55 p.m. Update: The Post's Lisa Rein reports that no eight-car trains are stopping at the station and that the platforms are extremely crowded.

Original post: Metro spokesman Reginald Woodruff said construction work going on outside of Farragut North Station, unrelated to Metro, has caused small pieces of concrete or other materials to fall from the ceiling to the platform near Track 2 on the Connecticut and L Street side of the station.

"The area of the station involved is now closed to the public" he said, adding that no injuries have been reported. "Metro safety and structures personnel are on site investigating," he said.

DC Fire / EMS spokesman Pete Piringer reported no injuries. He said some concrete fell, apparently caused by construction, and there are inspectors looking at the concrete. He said traffic has been shut down on Connecticut Ave between K and L streets.

Original post: Connecticut Avenue NW is closed between K and L streets NW due to "fire activity," according to the District Department of Transportation. Be aware that buses that travel through the area are having to be rerouted because of the closure.
