A cold p.m. commute

4:50 p.m. Update: An accident on the inner loop of the Beltway near the Little River turnpike has traffic backed up for five miles.

3:30 p.m. Update: Traffic on I-270 N is heavy but flowing at decent speeds after an earlier accident temporarily stopped all traffic.

Snow has moved out of the region but frigid temperatures remain.

The current site of delays appears to be the Capital Beltway across the American Legion Bridge, where heavy volume is slowing the ride home.

2 p.m. Update: Maryland State Police are reporting a 10-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 70 between Frederick and Hagerstown.

Police say seven victims, mostly children, were taken to Washington County Hospital after the pile-up in snowy conditions at the 38-mile marker around 11 a.m. Friday.

1:55 p.m. Update: The accident has been cleared but delays remain heavy along portions of I-270.

1:45 p.m. Update: Traffic on I-270 North remains at a standstill. The stoppage is also affecting on-ramps, with long lines of cars attempting to access the interstate.

In the District, drivers were shrugging off the few flakes that began to fall Friday morning, but north and west of the city communities were contending with widespread impacts due to snow and ice.

Traffic on Interstate 270 North ground to a halt as a five-vehicle accident blocked the lanes at Route 109. From Clarksburg south to Germantown traffic wasn't moving.

From Sam Eig Highway north drivers were contending with conditions that blocked lanes and left cars skating around the pavement. Accidents also circled the Baltimore Beltway, with an overturned tractor-trailer delaying traffic further near Eastern Boulevard.

The Interstate 70 and 270 corridors were lined with accidents as snow passed through the area at midday. Snow that found little purchase to the south made roads through Frederick and other communities slippery enough to cause travel headaches. Medians and other areas were covered in a light dusting of flakes.

The Frederick police issued an alert to drivers, asking that they use caution while traveling -- if they needed to be on the roads. The police expressed a preference that drivers stay off the streets so that public works crews could treat the roads. A snow plan went into effect at 11 a.m., restricting parking on designated emergency routes.

Police said they were responding to "a very high number of collisions," and warned that police response times for reports of property damage would be "extremely lengthy."

The Maryland State Hiighway Administration said salt trucks were deployed in Washington, Montgomery, Frederick, Baltimore, Howard and Anne Arundel counties, and drivers were urged to keep their speeds down for the evening commute. SHA officials told the Baltimore Sun that roads had not been pretreated because the forecast had called only for flurries.

The Post's Capital Weather Gang said that snow was mostly ending by early afternoon.

Several roads were reported closed. I-70 West in Washington County was closed by an accident and Route 355 at the Monocacy River Bridge was shut down. State Route 144 was closed just south of Interstate 70 and icy conditions were reported around the region. Interstate 66 West from Linden to Front Royal, Va., was temporarily closed due to multiple accidents.

Also, traffic was back-up for no telling how many miles due to trucks jack-knifing near the 340 bridge crossing into WV at Harpers Ferry. I had to turn around and come back because traffic just sat there without moving an inch. I had to miss a very important appointment. Its amazing what little snow can do to the roads. :(

Traffic on I270 and 70 was ruined by d-bags driving SUV's thinking they could go 20 miles over the speed limit in snowy weather without crashing. I saw a ton of these idiots on my into the office. What a bunch of dolts.

I'm confused. The original post seems to be about yesterday, but the lanes are blocked at 1:45 pm today? Is the date wrong and this was 1:45 pm yesterday or is there a problem going up 270 now that somehow got added to a post about yesterday?

Now we're talking about Friday, but a half hour ago, the post said flakes were falling THURSDAY morning. That, coupled with comments about the evening commute, made it sound like a post from yesterday. Apparently the blog has been corrected now, without comment.
