Don't miss last Metro train

By Robert Thomson

Jim Hughes, Metro's planning director, had two practical tips for travelers during this weekend's big disruptions on Metrorail: dress warmly and plan your route for Friday night.

On the first point, he was thinking of riders who might have to wait for trains on outdoor platforms or stand in line near station entrances for the free shuttle buses that will get Orange and Blue Line riders around the shutdown at Foggy Bottom Station. Temperatures will moderate a bit this weekend, but the lows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday still will be in the 20s.

On the second point, he was thinking about what traditionally is the most difficult time for riders during one of Metro's weekend maintenance projects: The Friday night start, when people who have gotten to an event one way discover that they may not be able to get back the same way, because the track work has begun.

Here are some more details about the train schedules to help your weekend planning.

Blue Line
Before Foggy Bottom Station is closed at 10 p.m. Friday and the shuttle buses are set up, the last Blue Line train going all the way through to Largo Town Center is scheduled to leave Franconia-Springfield at 9:12 p.m., Rosslyn at 9:40 p.m., Foggy Bottom at 9:43 p.m., Farragut West at 9:45 p.m., McPherson Square at 9:46 p.m., Metro Center at 9:47 p.m., Federal Triangle at 9:49 p.m. It will arrive at Largo Town Center at 10:16 p.m.

The last Blue Line train going all the way through to Franconia-Springfield will leave Largo Town Center at 9:22 p.m., Federal Triangle at 9:50 p.m., Metro Center at 9:51 p.m., McPherson Square at 9:52 p.m., Farragut West at 9:53 p.m., Foggy Bottom at 9:55 p.m., Rosslyn at 9:58 p.m. It will arrive at Franconia-Springfield at 10:26 p.m.

Orange Line
Before the Foggy Bottom closing, the last Orange Line train going all the way through to New Carrollton is scheduled to leave Vienna at 9:28 p.m., Rosslyn at 9:50 p.m., Foggy Bottom at 9:53 p.m., Farragut West at 9:55 p.m., McPherson Square at 9:56 p.m., Metro Center at 9:57 p.m., Federal Triangle at 9:59 p.m. It will arrive at New Carrollton at 10:25 p.m.

The last Orange Line train going all the way through to Vienna is scheduled to leave New Carrollton at 9:18 p.m., Federal Triangle at 9:45 p.m., Metro Center at 9:46 p.m., McPherson Square at 9:47 p.m., Farragut West at 9:48 p.m., Foggy Bottom at 9:50 p.m., Rosslyn at 9:53 p.m.. It will arrive at Vienna at 10:15 p.m.

Shuttle bus connections
For night riders trying to reach Rosslyn or Farragut West before the shuttle bus service closes for the night, the last Blue Line train is scheduled to leave Franconia-Springfield 20 minutes earlier than usual, leaving at about 2:09 Saturday morning and again Sunday morning. On Sunday and Monday nights, that last train is scheduled to leave at 11:09 p.m.

To make the shuttle connections, the last Orange Line train will leave Vienna 20 minutes earlier than usual, at about 2:08 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday and Monday nights, that last train is scheduled to leave at 11:08 p.m.

Circulator bus
Don't miss the D.C. Circulator bus either. In my Commuter page report on the weekend disruptions, I said the Circulator buses might be a good alternative to Metrorail in the area of the Blue and Orange Line disruptions between Rosslyn and Farragut West. The Circulators have routes between Rosslyn and Dupont Circle and between Georgetown and Union Station. See route details here.

But in my report, I said that SmarTrip users had three hours to make the free transfer from Circulator to Circulator. That's not correct. It's now two hours for Circulators, the same as it is for Metrobuses. The Circulator's fare page also has been corrected to reflect this.

Comments

What happened to the last Orange line train leaving Metro Center at 9:46pm and the last Blue line train leaving Metro Center at 9:51? I walked out of Verizon Center at 9:30, and the display at 11th St. entrance at Metro Center read 9:45 when I went through the turnstile. When I went downstairs, the PID ran through the elevator outage updates, before saying that Blue line and Orange line trains would terminate at Farragut West. The intercom announcement said that Foggy Bottom was already closed. I took a Yellow line to the Pentagon to connect to the Blue line to Rosslyn, but when I asked the attendant at that kiosk what time Foggy Bottom had actually closed, he wasn't sure.

While I appreciate the signs that said there would be a closure at Foggy Bottom, details of the last departure time on the PID would have been useful -- especially if that information had been available when I left Gallery Place BEFORE the Caps game, which would have been about 6:15 pm.
