Metro adjusts L'Enfant patrols

By Washington Post Staff and Wire Reports

The Metro Transit Police Department has adjusted patrols at the L'Enfant Plaza Station in the wake of an attack on a man there on Sunday. Metro is also seeking help from the public in its investigation into the incident.

Metro spokeswoman Cathy Asato said Friday that a 47-year-old male passenger was reading a book Sunday evening at the station when he was beaten, and that police are investigating the incident.

The incident was first reported this week by the blog Unsuck DC Metro (http://unsuckdcmetro.blogspot.com).

The YouTube video appears to show the group pursuing, taunting and punching the man. (The video is viewable here but be forewarned, it also contains profanity.)

Earlier TBD identified the man as Allen Haywood of Northeast Washington, who said he was left battered and bruised after the incident.

Here is Metro's official statement on the incident.

The Metro Transit Police Department is seeking assistance from the public and encourages anyone who witnessed or has information about an assault at L'Enfant Plaza on Sunday, Jan. 2, about 7:15 p.m. to please call the Metro Transit Police Detective Branch at 202-962-1792.

This was an unfortunate incident and the MTPD is following up with an investigation. After the assault, the man reported it to the station manager on duty at L'Enfant Plaza who immediately notified the police. A Metro Transit Police officer responded, immediately took a report from the man and began the investigation. The victim received minor injuries and declined medical assistance.

If customers witness a fight or are the victim of an assault, they should immediately report the incident to the Metro Transit Police by calling 202-962-2121 or notify a Metro employee. Customers also can use emergency call buttons on every rail car which connect the caller to the train operator. On platforms emergency call buttons on pylons contact a station manager.

The Metro Transit Police Department has adjusted its deployment of officers at L'Enfant Plaza station, and will be watchful of groups of young passengers approaching other customers.

Just another fine example of DC nightlife, as well as the complete lack of law enforcement in the area.

It seems DC needs roaming police death squads (like the barrios of Rio) to take care of these thugs.

More evidence they should quit violating citizens' Fourth Amendment rights and begin "protecting and serving."

Posted by: LMarie1 | January 7, 2011 2:27 PM | Report abuse

Perhaps Metro should reconsider not only its security tactics, but also it's definition of "terrorist."

Or

One might have thought this was the Woodley Park stop, given all the animals participating and standing idly by.

Oops. "its."

It shows that they choose the soft and weak. I would have latched onto one of those kids and mulled him good.

They would have thought he was attached by a bear. I combative position would have been to just get ahold of one of the attackers.

Yes, merely "unfortunate". Nothing to see here folks, nothing to see.

@madmike272, except this happened at 7pm in the evening with many people just standing and taking videos of the incident with their cell phones. Hardly the nightlife crowd. People are still getting off work at that hour. The bigger problem is no one went to metro transit police or called for help.

how is it possible that station managers see people smoking and eating on the platform and respond via loud speaker but when peoples livelihood is being threatened they are never responsive.

what are the priorities here?

I'm curious why this story is limited to a traffic blog and not given an official Wapo story? Gee, why could that be?

The tag line/link on the local page reads: "After attack, Metro patrols tweaked"

Does the editor who wrote this tag line know what the verb "to tweak" means in colloquial American English? Namely, to use meth or tina. Of course, the editor may have been resurrecting the Post's former habit of using puns in headlines.

If read as a passive voice sentence, the tag implicity means "After attack, Metro patrols tweaked [by Metro management]," i.e., Metro tweaked, aka adjusted, the officers' duties.

However, if the sentence is read as an active construction with "tweak" treated as an intransitive verb, the tag line would implicitly read, "After attack, Metro patrols tweaked, [i.e. used meth]."

I think it's funny how many people at work use "tweak," apparently w/o knowing its colloquial meaning. For example, "We need to tweak this document."

BTW, I don't tweak, or have a good time at 4:20, I only have food issues. LOL

It's these teenaged thugs who are the real terrorists threatening the Metro system.

Having problems seeing the video.

Let me take a wild guess as to the race of the female perps...

Black?

Posted by: TaxiDriver | January 7, 2011 3:52 PM | Report abuse

Black or white, Female or not, as a grown man i would have beat the sht out of those kids. it's not about being a gentleman or non-violent when you are being attacked by anyone! they stepped to a man they can get punched i the face like a man.

Another epic Metro fail... They make a big deal about how these random bag checks, even announcing over the station speakers about how they are for our "safety" yet when was the last time you actually say a member of the Metro transit police in any of these problem stations?

Come on Metro! These 'gangs' infest the same few stations every single day. Put some cops out there, make the visible and do something about it! If you REALLY want us to believe you give a rat's a@@ about our safety, we really know you don't - but it wouldn't kill you to try - but at least TRY.

It wouldn't kill you to try to keep us safe, hell you've got the killing part down pretty well. Now try the 'safe' part.

If the perps are NOT black, I'll donate $50 to NAACP.

The only woman who is allowed to slap/hit me is my mother.

A girl/woman who attacks a male stranger on the subway for absolutely no reason is nuts or a thug. Either way they must be beaten down to the ground if no police are around. Make the broad wish she'd never been born.

RockvilleBear:

Your post is kind of cute, but you misapprehend the meaning of the word colloquial. You mean "slang" or perhaps more narrowly, "street" (but only within the single context of drugs. Colloquial means informal, conversational as in a familiar style of speaking.

When you write: "However, if the sentence is read as an active construction with "tweak" treated as an intransitive verb, the tag line would implicitly read, "After attack, Metro patrols tweaked, [i.e. used meth]."

I think it's funny how many people at work use "tweak," apparently w/o knowing its colloquial meaning. For example, "We need to tweak this document" you're actually incorrect (as well as in your analysis of active v. passive constructions which do not change the denotative or connotative meanings of words). In both of your examples above, the word "tweak" means "to make a minor adjustment to". Context tells us this.

At the end of the day what you're really talking about--kinda sorta--are homonyms.

"The hunter took up his bow."
"The girl wore a bow."

Again cute, but inaccurate. (And, you know, totally unrelated to the content of the post.)

Watch the video of teens senselessly attacking an innocent man in the subway, but be warned there is a bad word on the tape.

Wow.

We're OK with showing the violence, but watch out for the profanity.

This is America.

Can't wait for the first "Not my child!" exclamation from this fine upstanding youth's momma when they're caught...then it will be everyone from W's to society's fault why their worthless piece of garbage kid attacked an unarmed Metro passenger without provocation.

Posted by: BigDaddy651 | January 7, 2011 5:09 PM | Report abuse

Unless the female is psychotic, it's highly probably that the guy did something to provoke the attack as mentally healthly don't tend to flip out for no apparent reason.

Perhaps is was TaxiDriver who quietly muttered "n!gger" under his breath as the woman silently stood her place next to him on the platform that cause the woman to go off.

This is why I keep my mace on me at all times. I'm just hoping for the day when the young suckers try me on the train, so I can hand out a nice can of @$$ whuppin on them. I say we all get together and target the "thugs" and "punks" who make the ride on the METRO so stressful.

Posted by: PublicEnemy1 | January 7, 2011 5:24 PM | Report abuse

So the perps weren't white?

If it happens on Metro, the perps are usually black. Or maybe Native Americans.

Soguns1 is blaming the guy who was attacked!

Typical. Come down on the victim. It's his fault. The poor black folks were just defending themselves against this ONE MAN.

Even if he had said the almighty precious "N WORD" (ooooh) would that have justified this? Get a life & grow up.

You have black men killing black men every day in the USA & black people are worried about a white person using the "N WORD."

Posted by: TaxiDriver | January 7, 2011 6:07 PM | Report abuse

No. We shouldn't be mean to the black thugs/punks. We have to coddle them. Their "Moms" doesn't care about them. Lets them do whatever they want. Even drop out of high school. Their "Pops" hasn't been seen since a month before they were born.

We should let them do whatever they want because of slavery & racism. THE WHITE CONSPIRACY holding the black man.

What's that you say? How did Obama become President when he's black? He should have been kept down by Whitey.

Hmm... Good question. Lemme think...

Let's go back to feeling sorry for the thugs. I like to make excuses/rationalizations for their behavior.

Who do the black hoodlums hurt the most?

The Black Community

This is a direct result of the policies that have weakened the police. After a while the criminals do not fear the public or the police.

Unfortunately, if I had been there or some one trained the same way, the police would arrest us for hurting the criminals. They call anyone that helps an aggressor, only the guy getting beaten can act in self defense. I am sure the sheeple were scared to act, not considering getting arrested. Once the little criminals were unconscious, I can assure you, that staying and explaining will get you arrested. That is the wacky way the police act around here. Race will come up right away and in DC being African American and unconscious on the ground, well I am as good as guilty. Heaven forbid that pulling the thugs off the guy might have killed one or more of them, then you are really screwed around here. When chaos happens, it is not always pretty.

There were too many to control, they would need to be dispatched so they discontinue the attack, that means stopping them. Just yanking one of the attackers down and slamming his/her head by accident will get you thrown in jail in DC, especially if the little thug is hurt.

So stop all your wanking about nobody helped. Just call 911 and wait and hope the beaten-on guy doesn't die. Remember, it is not self defense for you, especially if you hurt a criminal.

Don't ever pick up a large stick and hit some one attacking your neighbor, do not break one of his cervical vertebra, do not grab him and throw him on the ground. You will go to jail for helping. The DC police, must have wanted my neighbor to die, I guess. You will be charged with felonies and the prosecutors will try to put you away for 8 years, and the the criminal Mf'er gets to sue you. So don't help, just let them die, or help and leave, but do not stay around to try to explain.

You can thank your elected leaders for the occurrence of this type of thing. This will happen more and more, since the police will/can do nothing to protect you.

Wow...a black on white crime is hidden back in the blogs section. If it was white on black, Al "Blacks Are Only Victims" Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would already be on TV demanding answers.

Don't hear much from them now. Oh I forgot...only whites can be racist.

I feel sorry for the guy who was attacked by the worthless trash that should have been abortion appointments.

Is it any wonder why we DC teachers can't raise test scores of the students in DC? These are who we attempt to teach every day in DCPS. No wonder many are throwing in the towel after this year is up.

This is what happens when you have government programs that tell people they are victims, that the situation they are in is all the fault of others, that they can do what they want because if someone stops you it is racist, that breeding children you cannot feed or take care of is your right along with all the "goodies" that goes with it. Notice they attacked a white man and there is no out cry about this hate crime which is by definition what it is. But no blacks cannot be racist, cannot commit hate crimes they are exempt.

How is this not front page news? These animals should be culled. They may mimic human voice, but they are no more human than a parrot. It's too bad the gun ban in DC is somehow still in effect because if these animals thought for one second that this man was armed, they would have never attacked him.

Posted by: riomarcos1 | January 8, 2011 12:19 PM | Report abuse

Wow. Did this story of a random violent attack on a Metro passenger who was minding his own business make it into the print edition of the Post? If not, why not? This should have been on the front page of at least the Metro section, but better on A1 instead of all the silly soft news the editors put there. We are ill-served by Post reporting.

I've said it in Post comment sections before this: there is a type of DC schoolgirl who is aggressive, bullying, smack talking and menacing to her peers, her teachers and now, apparently, adult Metro riders. These junior viragos are one of the reasons I try to avoid riding Metro. The problem needs to be addressed in a comprehensive way -- by which I mean both in the schools and on Metro.

During Giuliani's time as mayor of NYC he and the police chief implemented an anti-crime program from the bottom up. They found that by addressing petty crime (drinking on the street, fare beats) they reduced major crime. Metro should implement some of those proven policies. Rooting out farebeating is one means of addressing rider safety. Implementing programs that stop rowdy behavior before it starts is another.

Right now this kids know that they can act up and even beat up people on Metro with impunity. Time to change that mindset.

Posted by: cassandra9 | January 8, 2011 2:11 PM | Report abuse

Why not Cassandra? MONEY. With tourist season around the corner, they want to project the false illusion that the city and Metro is safe.

I for one avoid Metro unless absolutely possible and won't ride unless I have pepper spray or other type of weapon to defend myself. Yes, you have the right to defend yourself, people.

To the folks defending the scum that attacked this man..Next time they will pick the worng person.
