Open door on NYC train

The New York Times this week had the curious tale of a MetroNorth train hurtling on raised tracks and through tunnels with one door completely open, while riders on the full train stood nonchalantly inches away.

"The train started to move and everyone just kind of acknowledged it, eyeballed it for a second and then shrugged it off," wrote the man who took the video.

MetroNorth said it's investigating, and that customers should immediately notify conductors of problems.

Too bad Metro trains can't do this. It is so frustrating to be in the train car - when virtually nobody is even standing - while the train doors cannot close the train operator berates passengers for leaning against the train doors.

Metro sucks.

I'm not sure I follow getjiggly's point. Is he saying the customers are well-trained? :-)


Anyway, it seems simple enough to me: Just stand well back from the open door.

Yes, the passengers. If they don't report a problem, they get home. If they do, they might not.

You didn't need to explain yourself. I was just poking fun at the way you posted the same comment four times in a row.

The Post's blog software seems to be incredibly slow after you hit "Submit." I'm guessing you clicked "Submit" multiple times because it took so long. You just have to wait it out (I usually Alt-Tab to something else and check back after a while).

It doesn't even take a double click here... the page just hangs and puts out 0-5 comments.

No one wants to be the reason that the entire rest of the train is delayed. As others have said, it sounds like the people on the train knew what they were doing, wanted to get where they were going on time, and knew enough to stay away from the open door. A train full of families with young children would be a different story.
