Smoking manholes disrupt traffic
Two manholes are smoking underground in separate incidents in Northwest and Northeast Washington which could cause traffic disruptions at the end of Thursday's rush hour, D.C. Fire officials said.
Firefighters were first called to the 2nd Street and Constitution Avenue NE about 6:20 p.m., and found smoke pouring from the underground vault, said Pete Piringer, a spokesman. Minutes later authorities were called to the 1800 block of K Street NW and found a similar circumstance.
No injuries or property damage were reported.
Officials said traffic is shut down at those locations, as the manholes are in the street. Firefighters are waiting for Pepco to shut down power, Piringer said.
