By Mark Berman

8:55 A.M. UPDATE:

The accident on U.S. 50 has been cleared. Ditto the disabled bus on South Capitol Street.

I-66 East is badly backed up at the Beltway, while I-395 North is sluggish at the 14th Street Bridge.

The disabled vehicle on I-66 East at Chain Bridge Road has been cleared, but there are still delays in that area.

8:30 A.M. UPDATE:

An accident on westbound U.S. 50 at Collington Road/MD 197 is blocking the shoulder.

The merge lane on the ramp from Route 123 to eastbound Leesburg Pike has reopened.

8:15 A.M. UPDATE:

A disabled vehicle on I-66 East at Chain Bridge Road is blocking the left lane.

An accident is blocking the merge lane on the ramp from Route 123 to eastbound Leesburg Pike.

There's a report of a disabled bus on South Capitol Street near Nationals Stadium.

7:50 A.M. UPDATE:

Both lanes have reopened on the southbound Baltimore-Washington Parkway at Powder Mill Road.

And the accident on I-95 North before Ritchie Marlboro Road has been cleared and all lanes reopened.

7:25 A.M. UPDATE:

Just to clarify, the accident on I-95 North before Ritchie Marlboro Road is blocking three lanes. One lane can get by.

More on the accident we reported earlier in the 4800 block of Eastern Avenue in Northeast Washington: Due to an overturned vehicle Eastern Avenue is blocked in both directions between Crittenden and 16th streets. It's a bad idea to get anywhere near this stretch, which runs parallel to the Maryland-Washington border, because the backups will be considerable. Head south to South Dakota Avenue or north into Maryland to take Chillum Road.

7:20 A.M. UPDATE:

One of two lanes has reopened on the southbound Baltimore-Washington Parkway at Powder Mill Road. One lane is still blocked due to the investigation into this morning's earlier carjacking.

7:15 A.M. UPDATE:

An accident on I-95 North before Ritchie Marlboro Road is blocking three lanes and one of the shoulders. Expect big, big delays.

Traffic signals are flashing at 18th Street, Q Street and New Hampshire avenues in Northwest Washington.

An accident on the 4800 block of Eastern Avenue in Northeast Washington could cause problems in that area as well.

6:50 A.M. UPDATE:

The accident on the inner loop at Kenilworth Avenue has been cleared.

Congestion is building on I-66 East at the Beltway right now.

I-95 North is also pretty slow around Woodbridge as well as at the Springfield Interchange.

6:35 A.M. UPDATE:

An accident on the inner loop of the Beltway before Kenilworth Avenue is blocking one of the shoulders. This could wind up causing delays, so watch out in that area.

6:25 A.M. UPDATE:

The traffic signals are reportedly flashing at North Capitol and F streets in Northeast Washington. Remember to treat any such intersection as a four-way stop.

6:20 A.M. UPDATE:

I-95 North is very, very congested at the Springfield Interchange. An accident at that spot is blocking the right shoulder of I-95 North, but the congestion stretches back several miles.

6:05 A.M UPDATE:

Southbound Baltimore-Washington Parkway is blocked at Powder Mill Road due to an investigation of a reported armed carjacking, according to the U.S Park Police. The road is closed so they can search the scene, where the carjacking took place. There were no injuries reported and they have recovered the car, officials said. Suspects are in custody, and they expect the roadway will reopen no later than 7 a.m.

ORIGINAL POST:

Good morning, commuters. Things warm up considerably in the area today in advance of tomorrow's expected winter storm, which is an improvement over the frigid last few days. Check back here throughout the morning for updates on headaches awaiting you on the road, and make sure to let us know what you see or encounter in the comments below or on Twitter (@DrGridlock).

Police activity has shut down southbound Baltimore-Washington Parkway/MD 295 at Powder Mill Road in Laurel. Use I-95 South instead, or -- if it suits you -- perhaps southbound U.S. 1 or U.S. 29 are also options.
