Chinatown crowds, detours on Sun.
The Year of the Hare Chinese New Year parade and celebration will close several streets in the District's Chinatown on Sunday afternoon. There's also another big event drawing crowds to Gallery Place: The Washington Capitals host the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Verizon Center on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. (in a game that will be shown on NBC). The area around the Verizon Center will be incredibly packed on Sunday, so allow extra time if you're heading there.
Street closures related to the parade and celebration will mostly begin at 1:30 p.m. and run through 3:30 p.m. The closest Metro station is the Gallery Place-Chinatown stop, but in addition to crowds, there will be Metro work causing some delays on the Red Line. Again: leave a lot of extra time if you're heading this way.
These streets will be closed from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., according to the District Department of Transportation. All streets are in Northwest Washington:
-- I (Eye) Street from Fifth Street to Seventh Street
-- Seventh Street from I (Eye) Street to G Street
-- G Street from Seventh Street to Ninth Street
-- Eighth Street from G Street to H Street
-- H Street from Eighth Street to Sixth Street
-- Sixth Street from Massachusetts Avenue to G Street
Additionally, I (Eye) Street will close from Fifth to Sixth streets at 9 a.m. to allow for parade participants to assemble (it should also reopen by 3:30 p.m.). H Street will be closed for the festival from Sixth to Seventh streets at 9 a.m. and will reopen by 5 p.m.
All of the street closures are occurring to the north of the Verizon Center, so if you are driving to the Caps game, plan on heading south afterwards to avoid crowds and congestion.
Dr. Gridlock notes that Metrobus Routes 70, 80, P6 and X2 will detour from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. around the 600 block of H Street in Northwest.
