Beltway congestion in VA, MD

By Mark Berman
Mark Berman

The accident on southbound I-270 has been cleared up.

The outer loop of the Beltway is pretty crowded near Colesville Road, but things appear to be moving. That's more than I can say for the inner loop near I-66, where traffic is basically inching forward.

South Capitol Street is heavily backed up approaching the Douglass Bridge, while traffic on Pennsylvania Avenue heading downtown across the Sousa Bridge is much easier.

8:40 A.M. UPDATE:

There's an accident on southbound I-270 at the I-495 South split, which could cause bad backups in the area.

8:25 A.M. UPDATE:

There are delays on the inner loop of the Beltway near Alexandria. I-395 North is also slow passing Seminary Road right now.

8:05 A.M. UPDATE:

The northbound lane of I-270 has reopened and the vehicle has been cleared.

The Beltway congestion around I-66 remains in place, while the outer loop of the Beltway is pretty slow near University Boulevard.

7:40 A.M. UPDATE:

A vehicle fire on northbound I-270 is blocking one lane before Democracy Boulevard.

The inner loop of the Beltway is now backed up at I-66. I-395 North is sluggish just north of the Springfield Interchange as well as at the 14th Street Bridge.

7:20 A.M. UPDATE:

The accident on I-270 South has been cleared.

7:05 A.M. UPDATE:

The inner loop of the Beltway is very slow near Arlington Boulevard.

U.S. 29 has fully reopened at Colesville Road.

An accident on I-270 South at Quince Orchard Road is blocking one of the shoulders, but it could cause traffic headaches.

The apartment fire in Southwest Washington is blocking First Street from O to P streets.

6:50 A.M. UPDATE:

Due to an apartment fire, the 1400 block of First Street is blocked in Southwest Washington.

6:35 A.M. UPDATE:

One northbound lane and one of the shoulders of U.S. 29 are blocked at Colesville Road.

6:20 A.M. UPDATE:

Traffic is surprisingly heavy on the Beltway in both directions at the Little River Turnpike right now, at least surprising given the time of the morning. There's also a decent amount of Beltway congestion near New Hampshire Avenue. Expect some traffic if you are heading out now.

Good morning, commuters. It's going to be a bit warmer and sunnier for the last day of the work week. As for the final morning rush this week, will things clear up like the weather? Only time will tell. We'll be updating throughout the morning on traffic conditions. Make sure to let us know what you see and hear in the comments below or via Twitter (@DrGridlock).
