Dr. Gridlock Archive: Tysons Corner

Rail work, street closings & blasting

Travelers will find Friday and the weekend's weather semi-arid compared to the Thursday deluge, and mild temperatures will encourage spring-like activity. The start of the Cherry Blossom Festival is still two weeks away, but you could shake off the winter blues at the District's St. Patrick's Day parade on Sunday. Daylight Saving Time starts Sunday morning, but it's still winter at the Verizon Center, where the Capitals play hockey with the Hurricanes on Friday night and the Blackhawks on Sunday afternoon. Here are some of the obstacles that could come between you and your destinations this weekend and next week.

Beltway lanes closing overnights

Rush-hour slowdowns on the Capital Beltway at Tysons Corner may be partly attributable to drivers gawking at the array of concrete piers and construction equipment that appears to change daily. But the lane closings for the Dulles Metrorail project are scheduled only for the night time.

Tysons Connector bus service to end

It was suppose to be one of the steps toward Tysons Corner's future as a transit-oriented, urban downtown. In November 2009, a free midday shuttle service was launched to usher riders among office buildings and shopping malls in Tysons. The...

Meeting on funding Tysons roads

The Metrorail extension to Loudoun County Airport, which includes four stops in Tysons Corner, is meant to reduce congestion in the traffic-choked job center. But in Tysons, officials say, the automobile will never become obsolete. Fairfax County officials have estimated that hundreds of millions of dollars will be needed to build a new street grid and other road upgrades for people who will still travel cars.
