Brett Favre, Vikings together again as return to team seems certain

Updated 6:05 p.m.

The plane carrying Brett Favre and his teammates arrived safely in Minnesota in the late afternoon. It was the story, as it usually does with Favre, that skidded right off the runway.

The plane carrying Favre and Vikings teammates Allen Hutchinson, Ryan Longwell and Jared Allen from Hattiesburg, Miss., was purple and white, the three waiting SUVs were black. There were choppers overhead, NFL Network guys tweeting what they were seeing on their network's internal feed, reporters on the scene and plenty of others watching on TV. Here, via Twitter, is how it went as reporters - indeed, all America except for Rod Blagojevich - made sense of the scene.

@wsjcouch: Brett Favre reportedly on plane to Minnesota. Hope plane doesn't get intercepted and flown back to New Orleans.

@nflnetwork: FAVRE HAS LANDED!!!!

@Greg_A_Bedard: Oh yeah, here we go, helicopter cam.

@JudyBattista: Oh my. Like OJ.

@CindyBoren: Only without the APB.

@Chris_jenkins34: Plane on the ground, plane on the ground, lookin' like a fool with your plane on the ground

@JudyBattista: Childress didn't pick him up this year? Oooooh, diss.

[At this point, America wet itself.]

@JasonLaCanfora: Favre stood at doorway but popped back inside. 3 SUVs awaiting. Allen, Hutch and Longwell in car

@wsjcouch: Is there a big purple siren at ESPN that flashes and announces "FAVRE BATTLESTATIONS! REPEAT: FAVRE BATTLESTATIONS!"

@JasonLaCanfora: Oh snap, there he is. No. 4 just got off plane. Last one off. Next stop the team headquarters I imagine

@JasonLaCanfora: He's off the plane now. No going back now. He's getting in an SUV. FAVRE WATCH '10 IS COMPLETE! Hope it was good for you

@SI_DamonHack: Fans on the street, cameramen on the roof, cops in the parking lot. Everybody waiting on Favre

@Jason LaCanfora: You guys do get there is a fair amount of tongue pressed in cheek (thumb pressed in keyboard?) with the Favre Watch bombast, right?

@QBKILLA [Warren Sapp]: Black BMW kinda Got a White Bronco Feel To It!! #JustSaying.

@jimbradysp: As a Jets fan, glad to hear Favre is coming back agai again. I eagerly await this season's inevitable soul-crushing interception.

@SI_RossTucker: Nobody loves being loved quite like #4.

But the best part of the whole drama? As of 6 p.m. EDT, there was still no official word that Favre was back for his 20th NFL season. What if he just went back to Minnesota to get something he'd forgotten or -- gasp -- to ... announce his retirement?

His teammates' pep talk may have worked.

After a visit to his Hattiesburg, Miss., home by three of his Minnesota Vikings teammates, Brett Favre reportedly is with them on a flight back to Minnesota, according to an NFL Network report. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reportedly earlier in the day that Vikings defensive end Jared Allen, guard Steve Hutchinson and kicker Ryan Longwell were missing from practice and were en route to Mississippi to speak with their quarterback about his future.

According to a report, Favre's official website has sent subscribers an e-mail saying: "Stay tuned for breaking news from the Minnesota Vikings today on Brett Favre's possible return."

Mark Maske will have more on the story in The League's News Feed.
