Yankees honor George Steinbrenner in a really big way
Everybody knew that New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was larger than life, but who knew he was bigger than Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio and Mantle -- combined?
His monument in Yankee Stadium's monument park was unveiled in a ceremony that features Joe Torre and Don Mattingly, among others, and, well, the monument sure is big. (At least no one said it was breathtaking.)
"It's big," Derek Jeter said. "Probably just how The Boss wanted it. The biggest one out there."
Just as the Boss, who died on July 13 at the age of 80, would have liked?
"No question," Jeter said. "It probably was his idea."
Steinbrenner's monument is 5 feet (not including the base) by 7 feet. Only four players (DiMaggio, Ruth, Gehrig and Mantle) and one manager (Miller Huggins) have monuments; theirs measure 2 feet by 3 feet.
"There's not too many monuments here," Jeter said. "The Boss deserves one as much as anyone."
