Gilbert Arenas fakes a knee injury; what's your take?

Well, Gilbert Arenas is making headlines again.

Rather than play in his "">first game at Verizon Center since Jan. 2, he said he faked a knee injury in order to get playing time for teammate Nick Young in the Washington Wizards' preseason home opener. Is this a selfless gesture or just another odd Arenas joke? (Thanks to Wizards Extreme for the video link.)

"I told [Nick] I'd sacrifice playing tonight so he can get some time in because I know he's kind of frustrated he's not getting a chance to crack the 3 position, especially since we're going three guards," Arenas said (with a smile, according to CSNWashington. "So I told him I'll go and fake an injury or say something's wrong with me so you can start."

Young led the team with 24 points on 10-of-14 field-goal shooting as the Wizards beat Atlanta, 107-92.

I have no idea why WaPo hate him so much!
It's just a preseason game. I'm thinking to resell my WaPo shares since WaPo have that kind of Sport Journalists including Chicago Wilbon.

I'm loving the new Wizards ! They are exciting, tough, talented, fast and are gonna win a lot more games then a lot of people think !

What I'm getting tired of is the boring, lazy, childish way that the WaPo is constantly reporting on my team.

Posted by: US-conscience | October 13, 2010 8:37 AM | Report abuse

agreed.

wapo is milking this stuff now, and i can't blame arenas for messing with them.

Great to see Gil smile and laugh again! He is going to be amazing at the 2.

The Washington Post is making news here, and it's time they stop. This is like bringing up a joke in court and trying to convict someone of a felony.

We are tired of the Arenas stories, we don't care about his beard, we want him to succeed, if he doesn't we wouldn't mind if he found somewhere else to play. Seriously, we like Arenas, still do.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOO WHAT!!!! Who the hell really cares there are more important thing's to talk about then Gil's being goofy and faking an injury, how about where's this team going get legit scoring in the front court, leave Gil alone!.

Posted by: dargregmag | October 13, 2010 9:34 AM | Report abuse

Right, plus I think Gil is just as exciting with this young fast team as the fans are. I could tell by watching his reaction and excitment on the bench. Javale looked good playing against Etan.

Posted by: washwiz | October 13, 2010 9:42 AM | Report abuse

If it's true that Gil faked a knee injury to give Nick Young a chance to recover his confidence, that would be an admirable gesture on his part. If he's just kidding around, so what! The important thing is Young got his mojo back.

Although I believe in my heart that Gilbert is truly one of the good guys and a hard worker, this again is an example of Gilbert not using good sense. It is not his decision as to who plays, but the coaches decision. Faking an injury in order to create the starting roster he wanted to see may have been selfless in one regard but can also be seen as being all about himself and not really a selfless act at all. I really like the guy. I wish he wouldn't give the media a chance to zero in on him.

Ah Gil... For once can something happen to the Wizards and it not be about you? "Mr. I am going to keep to myself" because people didn't think it was funny that I brought guns to the locker room or that I take a dump in people's shoes -- played yet another precocious prank on the wily Mr. Flip Saunders.. And to think this man is a father of three children is amazing..

After last night , you would think that Flipped might go with Wall, Arenas and Young to see what that does. But he won't because he sticks with his preconceived ideas to the extent of losing. I think Gil was being sarcastic and if he wasn't it is just a preseason game. Most teams have sat out their starters . The point with the Wizards right now is the bottom 5 guys wwho will make the team. Don't get carried away with the wins.

Disrespectful to the team, the coach, Nick Young, the fans, and the game. Get him and his $80 million dollar ball and chain out of town!!!

When do you ever hear of this non-sense from the elite players in this league?
Especially players that are almost approaching their 30's... Gilbert Arenas has to go now, he undermined the coach already, he does these silly stupid pranks, I mean when will he ever get it?... Trade this idiot before he single handidly destroysthe franchise, because hes done enough

I'm missing something here - how does an employee lying about an injury = WashPo making up news?

Make him a bench player, that will wake him up. Or he'll pout, cry and prob get his way and be traded for nothing.

Calm down. If that happens, you'll be one of the first complaining that we're not winning. Gil is a good player and obviously a good teammate. Nick doesn't deserve the bench. He deserves starter or sixthman minutes. He's showcased his talent when he gets legit playing time. You should personally thank gilbert for allowing Nick to do his thing on the court. Go Wiz!

How many people work for a living faked that they were SICK so they could stay home for a day? Pleeeeease get real story. Leave Gil alone.

Posted by: clifton3 | October 13, 2010 10:43 AM | Report abuse

My take on this is: What's the big deal? It's a preseason game and NY definitely needs to build up his confidence and if this helps, it will have been worth it. If this is an issue between Gil and Flip, let them handle it. For myself, I can't wait to see Gil back on the floor in a Wizards uniform. For all those who want to get rid of him, how much of it is for his pranks and how much because you HATE the idea of someone having such a high dollar contract. I frankly don't care how much his contract is worth. And, for those of you who do, then don't go to the games or buy team items. That way you can rest easier knowing that YOU aren't paying him that money. Yea, Gil!!!

I'm missing something.

What is with this blaming the Washington Post for writing the story? Arenas himself talked to the press and Arenas was the one who openly said he faked an injury. He could have simply said he was hurting and that would have been the end of the story. If you want to blame someone for the story, blame the person who invented the story and invented the injury but who, himself told everyone what he did.

pshh this shouldn't be an issue. Gilbert deserves some rest. Everyone focuses on the legal issues but we all seem to forget he has SERIOUS knee problems and he has played a season in several years. I would rather have him take off 1 game a week and be productive every other game.

NEWSFLASH: Nick young is a bum. I hope the wiz cut ties with him immediately. Maybe we can get a decent trade for him. He is no doubt a productive scorer. But he has not changed at all in the years he has been here. His defense is suspect. He is a heist box. While he is able to produce points at an incredible pace (at times!), he does nothing else to contribute to the team. Last night at the end of the 3rd quarter when the hawks brought the lead down to 13 it was because Nick Young missed 4 shots in a row. Not saying its bad he missed, but its the way he plays the game that is detrimental to the team. He doesnt distribute the ball, make the extra pass, or look for his team mates. He usually takes the first shot, and its the end of the possesion. When he does this 4 times in a row and misses all his shots, then we have a problem.

ALSO, look at his stat line. Yes he score lots of points. I find it hard to believe you can drop so many points in so many minutes, but I find it harder to believe that in those minutes you also cant register one block, one rebound, or one assist. Cut ties with this fool...

Yes, Cindy.

Gilbert Arenas is a joke.

The team owner and coaching staff has to take it firm, what ever the reason for DNP
Arenas has no right to open his mouth for media. He has to stick with his team and coach. The issue is not about him ,it is about the other young players in the team.Flipo need to show everybody that he can be firm.
25,000 please.

You people who are defending Gil have no idea what being a team is about. Unless Flip knew Gilbert was "faking" an injury (to the media) then he lied to his coach. Gilbert has no credibility to begin with and then he lies to his coach? How can you possibly trust him? It's nice to help out Nick Young, but there's a way to be a professional and a way to be a dunce. Gil, once again, has chosen to be a dunce it appears.

Posted by: gkronenberg | October 13, 2010 12:51 PM | Report abuse

Did anyone in the press stop for a second to ask Saunders about this before printing it. Did anyone ask Gilbert if he was serious or joking. Did any ask anybody how Gil would know that Nick Young wqas going to start in his position? Did anyone think that Gil was being sarcastic about it? Like flippantly taking credit for Nick's great game? The press is trying to make serious allegations out of this yet I
don't think they were responsible in their actions. Just saying they left alot of speculation open. It makes me feel like the WAPO sports have turned into the National Equirer. I don't think I am the only one to think so.

Awww...great to see Gil back, and his smile!

Posted by: washwiz | October 13, 2010 1:53 PM | Report abuse

For those of you asking what the story is here, the point is that it's not up to Gil to decide whether he's going to play or not, it's up to the coach. If Gil has this great idea for getting NYoung some playing time, fine, mention it to the coach.

I'm not saying Gil is mean or bad or anything like that, he doesn't seem that way -- he just seems totally clueless. About what's appropriate, about how he'll be perceived, etc.

He used to be the engaging man-child...
Now he just seems like a played-out child-child.

if he was doing something nice for his teammate, why can't he just KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT for once in his life???

you need one additional choice in the survey - "Arenas is an idiot."

Posted by: bestmick1 | October 13, 2010 4:38 PM | Report abuse

Arenas could set the Verizon Center on fire, killing hundreds and the response would be: "It's just Gil being Gil".

Posted by: randysbailin | October 13, 2010 5:18 PM | Report abuse

The fact that so many defend Arenas here is symptomatic of what is wrong in our society at large: the loss of moral integrity. People don't get that lying to the coach to get things to go your way is a big deal. That's a bigger shame than Arenas doing it in the first place.

Posted by: OintheSierras | October 13, 2010 5:34 PM | Report abuse

I like Gil, I think he's a good player, I think he's a good guy, but Lord he has no conception of where the lines are. He SO needs someone close to him with some idea of what is and what isn't appropriate and I am sure it isn't Nick Young, the eternal giggler. Gil, the coach makes the lineup, go talk to him, don't make up cock and bull stories which by the way is lying. Do you want to be known as a liar? Stop being silly and grow up! You are not 15 anymore!

Posted by: LaureninGlenBurnie | October 13, 2010 7:12 PM | Report abuse

This guy is a complete idiot. He's had chance after chance. Waiving unloaded guns in a locker room should have been a "Red" flag to ship this mess off to purgatory or Sacramento whichever is closer. He's a poison and it does not matter how many points he scores he's a mess. What have the Wizards won with him as a teamate? Nothing!
