Michael Vick: 'I wish I could' own a dog ... for his kids

By Cindy Boren

Michael Vick has gotten an endorsement deal. It's for Nissan and on the Eastern Motors scale, it's actually pretty good. Next, he'd like to get a dog.

Sorry, but he's going to have to apply the brakes on that one. Vick, in an interview with the Associated Press, reiterated what he said in a TheGrio.com session:

"I really mean what I say. I don't have a problem. I'm not a psychopath. I'm not crazy. I'm a human being," Vick told The Associated Press on Thursday. "What happened in my past and what I did in the culture I grew up in doesn't shape and mold me as the person I am now. I said it before that I wish I can own a dog and I'll continue to say it. I'm not allowed to, but I'm just saying I wish I could because my kids ask me every day. It's more so for them than for me."

Someday, sure. But not just yet, according to the head of the Humane Society of the United States.

"There may be some who would forever deny Michael Vick the opportunity to have a pet. I understand that sentiment. But there is a larger principle at stake here," Wayne Pacele said in a statement. "We at The HSUS are about the business of change - personal and societal change."

Vick continues to speak to children and other groups on his days off, as he did in Washington last year.

"The court doesn't make it an obligation for me to go out and speak," Vick said. "It doesn't make it an obligation for me to work with the Humane Society. I'm putting in the hard work to do it so it's not for any personal benefit, it's to help others."

Maybe his buddies at Nissan can make him a mechanical dog. It's the only kind he should ever have. Too bad about his kids but maybe he should explain to them why they can't have one. The guy is a total narcissist.

Waaaah, waaaah, waaaaaah! He needs to stop talking. I'm so very sorry that your kids are paying the price. Welcome to reality. Actions have repercussions.
Grow up and deal. You are lucky you have kids, a house, a career, and money.

@jiboo and caeasr -

So much for rehabilitation, eh? And giving someone a second chance.

I have no problem with Vick getting another dog. Good for him. And I could not care less if he ever gets back into dog fighting. The outrage over what he did was idiotic, at best. The venom you people spewed over it was childish AND hilarious.

Co-sign Snowdog. And he should be allowed to have a dog. I dropped the HSUS because of the over-reacting they caused.

There was this girl in H.S. who said she would save her animals before her brother during a fire because they were in cages and he had a better chance of getting out on his own. Her brother was 8 at the time.

I was speechless along with everyone else when she made that comment. I think about her whenever this topic comes up. There are those in society who believe that dogs are equal to humans. I appreciate animals and have nothing against them, but I don’t put them before most humans.

I didn’t realize we had some many perfect people in our society. Only perfect people can be so judgmental IMO.

Posted by: letsgetreal | December 16, 2010 5:49 PM | Report abuse

wow, Snowdog's post is a fabulous example of the kind of human failures who live among us. People who have no empathy for the suffering of animals are dangerous people. People who don't "get" what all the fuss is about are not people I care to understand or associate with. He pretends to chide us for not believing in Vick's rehabilitation but then he gives himself away by stating that he could care less if Vick starts fighting dogs again. Vick received a punishment for heinous behavior. Just because he's a national sports figure doesn't mean he can say, "Oh, I've been punished enough now. I think it's time for me to get a dog." Rather, he should explain to his children that he screwed up and did a bad thing and when you do that, you have to suffer consequences. That would set a good example for his children and may ultimately earn him redemption.

Be grateful for having a chance to make your comeback with your career.

As, for having a dog, you'd probably be best off to avoid the subject, period.

Give it a rest- the man has overpaid his debt to society.

If Vick were white, we all would have forgiven him by now, just like we did with Roethlisberger.

Posted by: mm14 | December 16, 2010 6:14 PM | Report abuse

So, dumb question, by court order, he can't own a dog? Is there time on that? like 20 years in jail, he can't own one for 20 years? Or is it just social pressue that says he can't own a dog?

“Just because he's a national sports figure doesn't mean he can say, "Oh, I've been punished enough now. I think it's time for me to get a dog."

@ Mona1950 – And who are you to decide that he’s been punished enough? He is going through the judicial process and prompting the PETA agenda. What more do you people want. Are you one of those perfect people I was talking about?

“If Vick were white, we all would have forgiven him by now, just like we did with Roethlisberger”

@mm14 – True Statement. Many will deny it, but it makes a difference. The other issue was the location. VA doesn’t take kindly those things.

My dog has been in contact w/ several other dogs and they're all relieved that Michael Vick isn't allowed to own a pet dog.

Posted by: randysbailin | December 16, 2010 6:31 PM | Report abuse

So how is it that the Human Society gets to determine what anyone's punishment is? How do they have standing with the courts in this case? Frankly these animals over humans activists are the reason I don't give to this cause. They're too fanatical.

"The other issue was the location. VA doesn’t take kindly those things."

@letsgetreal I agree with you, but also remember the UVA Lacrosse case. I was disappointed but not surprised that VA is not seeking the death penalty for Huguely. There's no question the prosecution would have found a way to seek the death penalty had the defendant been black.

It was only dog fighting, I mean come on, there is cock fighting in Mexico and bull fighting in Spain. As I don't agree with it, 18 months in jail was alot of time for some animals. Unfortunately pedophiles and rapists don't serve anywhere near that time.

The Vicks children can go play with their neighbors dogs! Sorry kids, Daddy got off easy with just the house arrest and short term financial problems. Don't worry though kids, Daddy can do alot with the 5 million dollar salary he gets this year. Since Daddy abused dogs for 7 years he is not allowed to have a dog for 7 years. Thats fair enough. It's only been 3 years since he was convicted so -- ask again in 4 more years!

Posted by: MrWillie | December 16, 2010 7:07 PM | Report abuse

@letsgetreal: Putting aside the quality of a culture which thinks animal cruelty is a legitimate hobby, look at Vick's argument. He said that the mitigating factor in his behavior (I love how, even in an apology, he fails to take responsibility for his actions) is that he was raised in a culture which condoned dogfighting--although apparently not so much that he didn't know it was illegal, as shown by his efforts to hide the kennels and his own involvement. He basically said that he didn't know it was wrong because everybody else does it, and that's how he was raised.

But now, after 1 1/2 years in jail and some heat from PETA, all of those years of cultural imprinting have been magically washed away. So, NOW, he can make a sound moral judgement. Bullshot.

And don't muddy the waters with this whole strawman about some kid not saving her brother because she likes the hamster more. First, her reasoning is pretty solid for a kid who can't write in cursive yet, and, second, it's a false dichotomy. Whatever decision you would make in the "burning building" allegory, you can still believe that animal cruelty is immoral. Also it's against the tenets of most religions, including Christianity.

@Jsuf: You're absolutely right. He got much less than rapists and pedophiles generally get. Nowhere near the time he served.

I work with people like the haters, when someone has success or just happy with life you hate on them because you never followed your dreams and desires. Go get a life and let him have his back.

Go fight the cause to stop hunger and homelessness in the USA. Go volunteer to rock a AIDS baby or read a book at the local Boys and Girls Club, please go do something more constructive then to hate on a person you don't even know. COME ON PERFECT LIFESTYLE PEOPLE !!!!

Vick own a dog? Never. I talked to someone who came from the county this dog killing operation was going on in. He said people were hearing rumors and then they noticed lots of local dogs were vanishing, then being found tossed along roads and in dumpsters mauled to pieces, some with duct tape on their snouts. They were being dognapped and used as target dogs for Vick's training of killer canines. This was a long-term operation done with great expense and deliberation. This wasn't just a couple of dogs being shot, hanged or electrocuted. It was cruelty in the extreme.

Why is this crazy person out of jail? Oh I forgot. He plays professional football and we all know that those folks are not really criminals when they commit a crime. Right? He should not be permitted to live around children unless the children have bodyguards.

How about that other NFL player who killed a person while drunk driving? He served NO TIME. AS much I don't agree with what Vick did, the time didn't fit the crime.

He can borrow my dog until the judge says it's okay for him to own.

No one who wants a dog and has the ability and money to care for one should be without. There are too many dogs being put down at shelters, even at Christmas time. Oh God, I pray that the evening news does not remind us of all the dogs that need adopting at Christmas time.

Only a few fighting breeds should be wrong for Vick to own.

Mick, don't call attention to yourself by wanting to have a pet... There is a certain segment of the populus that don't believe you should ever own any pets. Not even a gold fish. These people believe animals should have more civil rights than humans. Haven't you seen the way they sleep with their dogs and cats? Haven't you seen the way they allow their dogs and cats to eat at the same table, and walking around on their counter tops? Haven't you seen the way the keep acres of wild animals penned up in cages and try of "civilize" them into being less savage? Haven't you seen them going into the wilds and taunting wild beasts and trying to communicate with them like they are human beings, only to get attacked and killed? These are the people who think you are a savage for doing something that is common practice throughout the south. It just so happen that you were dumb enough to do it in a high end suburban neighborhood. where this type of behavior is greatly frowned upon. It also didn't help that you are a high-profiled black athlete making millions of dollars and flaunting it by degrading the neighborhood... You were simple made an example of and some people never want you to forget it...

Let Michael Vick have contact with a dog in the context of a family who owns, loves and nurtures dogs. If he demonstrates true love and an affection for an animal over an extended period of time, then that should be the acid test for his assertion to have an animal that will be loved and not abused

Until then, his word is not to be trusted,.

Mike took pleasure in torturing dogs to death because they weren't mean enough to kill.
I take pleasure in watching his team lose, and especially in him getting knocked around the field.

Im sorry, but someone who could knowingly and repeatedly abuse animals as he did for no reason but to make a dollar- absolutely doesnt deserve to own a dog, much less be able to have kids! I cant believe he thinks that just because he does some speeches, he should be viewed as a saint. He watched animals suffer, participated in the suffering process, and made money off of it, but now he's "reformed"? Wow, he really does have a lot to learn.
It SICKENS me that a man like this is being idolized as a pro-athelete, and I REALLY hope parents really take a good hard look at the kind of man he is, before allowing their kids to idolize a man like that.
AND the way you are raised is COMPLETELY indicative of the kind of person you will be. The fact he doesnt realize that says a lot about him as a man and a father.
Who does he think he's kidding??? If he wasnt allowed to play football after being in jail, he'd go right back to the lifestyle that landed him jail to begin with.

Hey, it only takes one dog to get the business started again.

People who for years exploit and torture dogs for the pleasure of fighting for profit don't change, no matter how much the Humane Society would like to believe it can happen.

Perhaps Vick's children should view some of the videos of their father's past business experiences with dogs, and then, they might better understand why they can't have a dog as long as they live under the same roof as their father.

Vick may not be a psychopath but he is most certainly a sociopath who lacks a sense of moral responsibility and social conscience. His public speaking engagements are little more than a means to an end to "appear" contrite and regain his status among the sponsors to improve his financial portfolio. It always has been, and will continue to be, all about the money, with little regard as to who gets trampled along the way.

Sociopaths do not change! They NEED enablers to survive. Sadly, Nissan and the Eagles proudly enable Vick while other more responsible businesses would put as much distance between themselves and Vick as possible.

The NFL and sponsors associated with them live in their own little world, and willing to overlook crimes by their players as long as they can "play ball."

It sends a very clear message to the youth of our nation - if you're a professional athlete, you can do pretty much whatever you want - even if the crime results in a prison sentence - and be rewarded.

In Vick's operation, dogs like Gypsy would be stood in a pool of water and electrocuted; and then their bodies piled up in a shed until the bulldozer dug a pit to bury them.

Not at all sure, Vick could be trusted with a dog. To bolster his image, he should just do charity work, and play football. Dogs are kind animals, devoted to their master, until someone changes their character. Definitely mans best friend. Dogs also don't collect alimony, and don't require a college education, and the expenses that go with it. Just a good diet, exercise, and a good Vet.

Gypsy died last year, but her story continues to be told as a reminder that people like Mike Vick STILL exist and hundreds of dogs like Gypsy are the end result of their for-profit dog fighting/gambline venture.

Caution: Gypsy's story contains graphic photographs and may be disturbing to some.

MrWillie - agreed. The only reason I flip to the Eagles game is in hope of seeing Vick on the bottom of a huge pileup of very large defensive lineman - suffering some of the pain he caused the dogs.

If his kids want a dog and he can't have one for them, then he can take them to a shelter or rescue and let them play with the dogs, walk them, brush them and enjoy them. Great for both kids and dogs.

Not a chance! Vick's "dog torture business" was in Surry County, VA. Though Surry County is a fair distance from Redskins Camp, Vick's legacy hangs over the camp like a dark cloud.

Too many people in VA are all too familiar with his story. Most fans don't even want Vick living in the Commonwealth, let alone playing on the team.

@letsgetreal,

I just think it's nice you were able to take time away from all your charity work to defend this pampered, whining, dog-killer.

BTW, its not my place or yours to "forgive" any of these freaks, only the victims can do that (tho' not really, in Vick's case). But for what it's worth, "Big Ben" scares me a helluva lot more than does MV.

Dude! You do NOT need a dog!!
I am all for the Michael Vick redemption drama, but man, he keeps making the same mistakes. His birthday party, He owes millions to creditors yet he just bought a $90,000 car for his girlfriends birthday, now he wants a dog. What's he gonna do? Eat it??

The comments about race are unnecessary. The brainwashed black posters defending and excusing Michael Vick's behavior are a disgrace. You are only defending him because he is black. You sound STUPID. And I am a black woman.

The man is a sociopath. Plain and simple. He should keep his thoughts about wanting to own a dog to himself. It shows that he really doesn't have a sense of the magnitude of his crimes. Anyone that has the ability to hurt a defenseless animal should be locked away for a very long time. He got off easy.

Actually, I am a white male. And you are brainwashed, or in deep denial. Look at how these posters call Vick, Woods all these hyperbolic names. Compare that with the slaps on the wrist they display for "boys being boys" -- Huguely, Charlie Sheen, Roethlisberger for much worse crimes. If you don't see the difference in enmity and vilification, it is you, in fact, that is stupid.

Hey mm14- hyperbolic, enmity, villification. You're trying way too hard to convince us of how rational and intelligent you are. Drop the passive-aggressive act. Ted Bundy was a real smart guy, too. If you can't comprehend the abject cruelty of Vick's acts, you have a very large hole in your heart. Have a lousy day.

i feel he did his time why continue to convict someone on their past. white America wants us to forgive them for slavery right . Or should we hold up advancement and constanly ponder on how wrong that Americans who fought and died for the freedom of this country then come home to be lynched raped and set to live with disparities that arent neccessary .as far as his acts are concern ..they cant hold a candle to what blacks went threw in this hypocritical country .What he did hurts the inner soul of all humans im sure . but for those who continue to cry .. here look at the history and contemporary times of blacks here in america . If that doesnt make you cry , want to reach out and change things, realize there is a much larger issue to focus on .for those who cant .. mark my words.. Every great empire must surely fall ...but for right now you all can say ''whheeeeeeyyyy''
enjoy while you can. or simply find a more important subject.

Wow, a comment from the caves of Afghanistan. Someday the cave dwellers might learn English as they try to incite racial division in the U.S.

Some simply refuse to acknowledge the 'big pink elephant' in the livingroom and would rather shoot sparks and diversion toward grammer punctuation ect... When was there ever racial unity in the united states ?????? oooohhh you mean when blk make up less than 18% of u.s. pop yet 50% of prison pop . or because we are unified at the liquor stores at every block in inner cities but not in beverly hills,ca . or anderson township ,ohio 'oh I got you unity ' hmm yeah o.k. . for you to think that there was ever unity validates exactly what vic said about his back ground and up bringing . you must understand how common place violence death and the total disregard for life was for him in his cognative thinking . you may say what? such cruelty? I agree but by all means you """must"" try and not understand but can surely attempt to appreciate (now with this understanding) the fact that his story(up bring) can not be the stories you are use to. It sucks that you were under the assumption we were united .Listen to the Nixon tapes then say that .Like being in a relationship and he/she has been cheating on you the whole time.huh? real quick something we learned in the cave. wht kid goes to mom says i want to be blk , she slaps him says go tell ur father , he does and he slaps him and says go tell g-pa he does and g-pa slaps him and says go to ur mom mom says what have you learned ? kid looks at his mother holding his bruised face and says ive been blk five minutes and i already hate wht people .

There are lots of angry white people that would just love for Michael Vick and any other black celebrity that breaks the law to pay with their life and blood, whilst their white celebrity equivalents get mere slaps on the wrist and a few fines....All this venom and anger would be better used to start marches and protests and picket lines for noble things like healthcare (including mental health) to all US citizens, equal justice for all despite racial and socioeconomic status, stopping police brutality, ending hunger, etc.....there are a lot of changes that we can all help in making to try to improve everybody's upbringing...so that there are no children who are growing up with gang violence, domestic violence, poverty, child abuse, hunger, animal abuse, sexual abuse or whatever......prevention is the key....but change is possible and I believe that Vick has paid the price and continues to pay the price for what he does....I don't think that anybody on here is saying that they agree with animal abuse....what I don't agree on is such a righteous indignation for some things and a total disregard or complete lack of acknowledgement about other things that are even more outrageous....

@mm14 – Thanks for your comments. I “assumed” you were Black because of your objective comments. I appreciate that you are able to see obvious racism that many whites choose not to acknowledge.

Question for the perfect people: Should Robin Starr own another dog because she accidently left her dog in a hot care that later died? I realize it was an accident, but I personally hold her more accountable for her actions because that’s her profession and advocacy.

If she is able to own another dog, then so should Vick. I try not to be a hypocrite.
