President Obama praises Eagles for giving Michael Vick a chance

By Cindy Boren

When Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie's phone rang the other day, President Barack Obama was at the other end of the line.

Just what was on the First Fan's mind? The redemptive season of Michael Vick and the greening of Lincoln Financial Field, among other things.

"The president wanted to talk about two things, but the first was Michael,'' Lurie told Peter King of NBC and Sports Illustrated. "He said, 'So many people who serve time never get a fair second chance.' He was ... passionate about it. He said it's never a level playing field for prisoners when they get out of jail. And he was happy that we did something on such a national stage that showed our faith in giving someone a second chance after such a major downfall.''

The Eagles plan to install 80 spiral wind turbines and 2,500 solar panels at the Linc, giving it about 30 percent of its energy needs. A biodiesel plant to be built nearby and natural gas lines will add the remaining 70 percent. The project will give 200 people jobs for a year.

"It's good business for us, which is the point,'' Lurie said. "We talked about policy and what he hopes can happen with alternative energy, and he raved about us being the first to put a plan like this in place.''

And don't think for a minute that Obama's NFL team, the Chicago Bears, wasn't a topic of conversation. Lurie said Obama and he talked football. "He's a real football fan,'' Lurie said. "He loves his Bears. He really follows it. He knew how Michael was doing. It was really interesting to hear.''

Everyone deserves a second chance.. The law should be rewritten that ex-offenders after staying out of trouble for 15 years should have there records sealed (only police or federal officials should have access) so that they (ex-offenders) can have a opportunity for a second chance at living a better quality of life free from discrimination and poverty. It is done with credit records and should be done also with criminal records.
Discrimination is what has been destroying America since its inception.

Sure, but only the wealthy get that second chance. After all, we all know this "redemption" was about the NFL's bottom line. Next time Vick loses a game, drown, impale, or beat him senseless.

If Obama were such a "real football fan" he would know this is not Vick's second chance, or third chance but at least his fourth chance. If he were not the starting quarterback for the falcons does anyone really think he would have gotten away with being caught with cocaine in his car or a loaded gun at the airport? If that were you or me we would probably still be on parole after serving our time.

Let's quit sayimng he is making the most of his "second chance" and, that the dog fighting was a "mistake". Mistakes are unintentional. There was nothing unintentional about Vick's conduct.

That is beyond disgusting. I've been wavering for some time, but Obama just officially lost my vote in 2012. Vick never served a day in jail for electrocuting, drowning, hanging, and bludgeoning dogs, all of which are separate crimes on top of dog fighting. He's an unrepentant, serial dog torturer who should be serving a multi-decade prison sentence for dozens of acts of felony animal cruelty.

Until he serves a prison sentence that is truly appropriate for his crimes, forgiveness is premature. That same year, a white dog fighter in Alabama was sentenced to a 102-year prison sentence for running a similar size dog fighting and dog killing operation.

We are a nation of dog lovers. This is another huge misstep by our inept president.

Vick is an animal killer - animal abuse
at the extreme in Vick's case.

He should have been sent to prison for
life, and deserves nothing. What
he did to the innocent dogs should have
been done to him.

Obama: shame on you for your support of
this criminal. Vick is just acting the
role pretending to be something he is
not.

Vick is a vicious animal killer who should
be executed, and should not be forgiven
nor playing professional sports.

Do not forget what this animal killer
has done - it is in his fabric, and
he is only putting on a front that
people, unfortunately, are buying into.

I am not!

I was in Blacksburg when Vick was at VT and it wasn't a big secret that he and his buddies regularly picked fights, beat people up, and generally filled the stereotype of bully jock (plus entourage) who gets away with anything and everything because he wins games.

Because of Vick, VT got approximately twelve zillion (actual figure!) more applications in 1999 than 1998, which -- along with the national attention -- brought the school and town quite a bit of cash. Logically, more money to an impoverished region (25% of SW VA is on disability, the rest are mostly working class) is worth one guy's thuggish behavior...but he's still a spoiled little thug after his 3rd, 4th, 5th chance, and always will be until his chances run out, which looks like never.

I believe the main crux for the call was to talk about the Eagles stadium. Lurie is designing new infrastructures in order to help lower feul costs as well as add jobs by adding wind turbines and solar panels.

I am so glad that these two awesome african americans don't address all of the non-sense posted by idiots. That just goes to show you the true gentlemen they are. I both love and admire them.

I am afraid to say it but this president has turned into an oblivious, out of touch Jimmy Carter type. Please get back to work. Please

Vick should never have been reinstated into the NFL. Playing in the NFL is a privilege, and with that privilege comes the responsibility of serving as a role model to millions of kids. All the Eagles proved was that getting a top-notch player on the cheap was worth compromising morality and their youngest fans.

Obama shouldn't be proud of a dog killer who only showed remorse after he was caught. Although Obama surely wants the American people to draw parallels between his presidency and Michael Vick's success (i.e., he wants us to give him a second chance), it is a completely idiotic move on his part. It is simply not a good thing for the president to be so gushing over a heartless dog killer.

Yet more racist comments against President Obama and Michael Vick. There is a disturbing element in this country that is preaching hate and it is not good. Loyal opposition is one thing, but this goes beyond that. Hate to think if the Tea Party gets eventual control of the Presidency and Senate.

Posted by: Larry66 | December 27, 2010 1:10 PM | Report abuse

You can make a mistake and get a second chance. But you just can't make that mistake.

There is really something wrong with you pick up a dog above your head, and slam it to the floor until it is dead. Michael Vick did this numerous times. Not to mention the amount of dogs he drowned and tortured.

Yet our president thinks that this kind of scum should get a chance to make millions. It just makes me sick that Obama will go out of his way to glorify Vick. What's next? Will he visit O.J. in prison?

Posted by: Redskin_in_miami | December 27, 2010 1:24 PM | Report abuse

Yes, if Vick was white, no call would be made.

That being said, Obama is no dummy, and the message of 2nd chances to (black) ex-prisoners is not a bad one, bc some definitely deserve not to be discriminated again.. I would not have wasted that call on a pos like Vick though. Anyone capable of doing what he did is a sicko who is missing core values and basic goodness. Vick is forever a loser.

A second chance? Did the dogs he led to slaughter get a second chance? Sports fans will cheer for any murderer, rapist, or thug, white or black, if he can help their team win a game. It is a sad reflection on our society that garbage like Vick get paid more than our firefighters, police and teachers. Sadder still are that so many people, including Obama, treat them as heroes because they can throw or run.

Lets put aside the fact that Vick tortured animals for fun. Lets forget that he lied about it to his teammates, his employer, the police and the public. Lets brush past the fact that he only made a plea deal when his fellow defendents flipped on him.

Since when does someone who ran an interstate illegal gambling ring belong in the NFL? Is racketeering no longer a concern?

Since gambling is apparently no longer an issue, then the baseball commissioner should sent Pete Rose a fruit basket, with a note reading "Bygones", and schedule Pete's appointment in Cooperstown.

I'm a Democrat. Obama is very wrong here. Vick's second chance (and all its accompanying wealth and glory) is just a signal that its okay to starve, electrocute, beat and kill dogs and cats FOR SPORT. It's not. Vick should be rotting in jail.

The people achieving fame should be all those animal charities who are still to this day rehabilitating and adopting out the dogs rescued from Vick's place.

I'm sure that President Obama approves of Michael Vick, a thuggish, vicious psychopath who derived pleasure from torturing and slaughtering countless dogs.

Although the President might admire the Eagles for other reasons as well. After all, the Eagles just cancelled their Sunday night game because of a little snow, flouting the traditions and ethos of playing in any weather or condition, however inclement, that has made the sport of football emblematic of the American spirit.

So while waiting for balmy weather to play the game, I hope the Eagles enjoy sipping white wine, nibbling on arrugula salad, and congratulating each other while basking in the approval of our President.

what kills me about the people on this blog is that half of them never even VOTED for anybody. And as soon as they get arrested and put in jail for anything they want forgiveness. President Bush (both of them) took more vacations than they were ever in the white house. I guees you expect PRESIDENT OBAMA to work 24-7-365 to fix the mess the BUSH CLAN put us in. and i guess we forget that the Bush was slow to react in both the bombing of the towers and Katrina. I guess if it were Kitty bunkport Maine, that was flooded or got bombed Bush would have called in the entire military to surround the city and lift it out of the water.

PRESIDENT OBAMA is doing an outstanding job at fixing the mess the rebublicans created. He is also doing what he needs to do to ensure we all have jobs and money to feed our family. Keep up the good work PRESIDENT OBAMA.

I think the story of sin and redemption is as powerful a story there is. I have nothing but admiration for Vick and what he's attempting to accomplish.

Nonetheless, wouldn't the President's time be better served calling China to talk about North Korea? Great googily woogily, Mr. President, you're the President of the United States of America. Start acting like it.

Something crossed my mind recently when Vick stated he wanted to won a dog some day because I personally felt it's too soon BUT what if one of his children made him feel like sh@ they can't own a dog because of his behavior? My daughter is a HUGE Vick fan but she was upset when he lost it all to stupidity!!!Maybe owning a dog is about showing his children he's changed not US????

I'm starting to think all this Vick hate is about jealousy he's proven he's TALENTED and all the jails in the world didn't take that. I'm proud he cancelled that stupid reality show and decided to follow his passion and redeem himself. It's called REHAB folks. You know what yall picket in front of jails (and halfway houses) for??? It saddens me the energy we give to dogs but not children in this country. I don't see this uproar on websites when kids are murdered, starved and miseducated.

Time to let it go folks because SPORTS wins out over teachers, policeman and firefighters in this country.....Good Luck Mike!!!!

I still cannot forget how he ominously started breaking his campaign promises by quickly getting a breeder dog instead of a shelter dog as he had said he would. He had his hands full with domestic and international problems, and yet he found the time to make sure that Vick got rewarded. Do they do dog-fighting in Hawaii?

I wonder what Obama's going to do with his "White House" dog once he leaves office. Give it to Vick? That will show you, dog lovers!

Look, I happen to be in the camp that thinks we cannot exist as a society without the ability to accept that those that offend our values and laws have to pay a penalty, but then should be allowed to pick up their lives and move on save for all but the worst - murderers, kiddie rapists...
But my eyes roll when yet again, our President has to stick his nose into matters far outside his office and opine. Jimmy Carter had that flaw too. Anything and everything was fair game for Jimmy to throw his two cents in, on.

Another poster said it well:
"I'm not disagreeing with Obama's thoughts on Vick - but can the man just shut up already? He knows his comments will be leaked, but he can't stop flapping his gums. He should be a reporter for People magazine not President.

Vick would be inspirational at teaching the kids not to make the mistake of getting caught. In his public speeches, he kept talking about bad company, dog-fighting being a culture and not knowing it's illegal, all those PR stuff. He'd never talked about how he felt about his victims, the dogs that he tortured and personally slammed (repeatedly) to death. There are lots of people who will never forgive him, because he had NOT learned his lesson as many claimed. Being able to run well in the football field does not automatically make him a good human being.

Cheap shots aside, Vick's actions disgust me and I don't think Obama should have commented one way or another--rich people tend to get second, third, and fourth chances no matter what, even OJ got a book deal--but some of the reactions against Vick have seemed a bit, shall we say "out-sized." If he were white, the President wouldn't have called, mostly because if he were white he likely would have been fined, and/or suspended for 6 games (that's the going rate, right Roethlisberger?), and been on his merry way.

In Korea they kill dogs and eat them. In the US we treat them as pets. In the US we kill cows and eat them. In India they are sacred and live in their houses. Vick plead guilty and served time because he violated a US law and was granted a second chance. The President said that part of the downfall of our nation was that prisoners are warehoused and not given a chance for redemption and they become career criminals in overpopulated jails. He told Lurie thanks for practicing what others are preaching--nothing wrong with that. He also makes unprecedented weekly calls to Gold Star Moms (the parents or fallen soldiers), I'm sure some racist anti-americans will find fault in that too).

I turned against Obama for his racist campaign against the CLintons.

What is lame of course is your clean pass to the food industry. That is of course because you are a sicko meat eater that stuffs your filthy mouth with meat by slaughtering animals whichever way you please. BTW, it has nothing to do with the food industry, although they are particularly eggregious. Any one who eats meat by killing animals (humanely or not) is a hypocrite, especially when they turn around and pet dogs, in my view, and yes, thank you I am a proud vegetarian.

The fact that the methodsof food industry in the US are legal is besides the point. It is a question of morality v law. Slavery was legal till 1860's.

Michael Vick served what time they gave him, and it is his right to leave jail and work to support himself and his family.

But that's a far cry from treating the man like some kind of hero. He's a felon and a sick individual who by some quirk of fate has gotten to make a ton of money playing in the NFL.

The fact that Mr. Obama has chosen to fawn all over such a miscreant speaks volumes about the President's character (or lack thereof).

Fans spend incredible amounts of their hard-earned money to cheer on any low-life who can help their team win a game. If all the money spent on NFL tickets went toward education maybe this country wouldn't be in such dire straights. But, then Obama wouldn't be able to watch Vick play his little game and collect his huge paycheck.

Amazing; the president calls for TWO reasons (the more important of which is to commend the Eagles owner for shifting the stadium's power system to a more effective and environmentally sound one), and even this WaPo writer zooms in on the crap he has to say about Vick.

Don't get me wrong--I hate Vick for what he's done and don't believe he should have been re-hired by the NFL, but I know better than to expect higher morals from those money-grubbing billionaires.

But many of Vick's defenders (who are most likely largely conservatives) are suddenly crying "racism" because Obama is the one praising Vick this time, instead of them and their animal-neglecting/abusing buds. If a Republican president had done the same thing, they'd be dancing in the streets.

I'm disappointed that Obama would take the time to commend a demon like Vick, but perhaps it shows his ability to respect a person for turning his life around. Republicans hate that.

I said it before, in a previous post, and I'll say it again. Whether you like it or not, Michael Vick's pre and post-prison situation has done more to benefit the eradication of animal cruelty than any single event since laws have been written to discourage it. Yes. Ironically, MV has saved more animals than any single person in history because of the attention created by his mistakes and positive actions thereafter. I challenge anyone to rationally discredit that fact. Your "dog murderer" has actually saved many more dogs than he has hurt. Not condoning what he did but, redemption is the American way people. He paid a hefty price and deserves to make things right. Get over it and be happy that a negative has turned into a positive for dogs everywhere.

Vick has attracted lots of publicity recently, but he has many defenders who still don't give a crap about the well-being of even their own pets--and never will. I have just viewed a comment that mirrors

my own. If Vick was White, do

you think Obama would have bothered to

call the Eagles' owner?. I don't think

so. Obama, for what ever reason, seems

to think that his simple gesture of

sympthasizing or empathizing with the

Vick debacle, will ingratiate the Black

Community to return to the folds of the

Obama camp in 2012 for voting purposes.

As I have mentioned in the past, Obama

is a calculating politician, devoid of

any preceivable compassion for the

American people; a man not worthy of my

vote, or any other American citizen's

vote in 2012, if you follow. One only

has to view his political record to date,

to realize that the Pretender in the

White House is in over his head, and in

2012, the American people will relieve

Obama from his pain, because he is

certainly one of US!!! When Obama decided

to mix into the Vick-Dog Affair, he

showed his true colors (pun intended).

Not only did he use poor judgement in

this simple issue, but he has used poor

logic in his unexplainable version of

Obamacare, and his recent passing of

the new Nuclear Treaty with the Russians

that is apparently flawed. I am sure that

no American feels comfortable with their

understanding of either of these major

Obama political projects, and I for one,

certainly do not.

Michael Vick has a severe character flaw. To do what he did takes a deranged and sick mind. Time in jail does not change that. He is a digusting person who deserves nothing. I don't hate him for being rich, successful or black. I hate him for what he did. He is not sorry for what he did, he's sorry he got caught. The world would be a much better place without Vick and others like him. Regardless of his success, he will pay for these atrocities. God or nature will make sure of that.

All animal lovers and anyone with a shred of decency should boycott all Eagles games. I refuse to finance Mike Vick. He should be forever barred from playing any professional sports.

Did Mike Vick give dogs a second chance as they lay there whimpering for mercy? No, all dogs who didn’t perform well were executed in a brutal manner.
Take a look at photos of the mercy Mike Vick showed the dogs.
http://www.animalrightsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/loveofdogs31.jpg
http://www.jollybengali.net/theconfluence/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/gypsy.jpg

The Bible says, “You will reap what you sow” which basically means what goes around comes around. He should receive the same kind of mercy. He should stop being such a cry baby as if he is a victim and take what he has done like a man. Mike Vick will not change but find a way to continue dog fighting under the radar of officials. I say this because for years he participated in dog fighting and only stopped because he was caught. Even his own Father urged him to stop in 2001 and he refused. If a Son will not listen to his own Father, then who will he listen to?
Boddie told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that around 2001, Vick was staging dogfights in the garage of the family's home in Newport News and kept fighting dogs in the family's backyard, including injured ones which the father nursed back to health. Boddie said his son had been urged to not engage in the activity, but continued. He stated: "This is Mike's thing. And he knows it."

If Obama wants Mike Vick to have a second chance then let the government give it to him. Recruit him in the military so he can observe REAL men and women doing REAL work and not for the absurd amounts Mike gets for tossing a ball around.
