Dave Wannstedt won't coach Pitt in Compass Bowl
Dave Wannstedt, in a take-your-bowl-and-shove-it move, has decided not to coach the Pitt Panthers in the Compass Bowl on Saturday.
Instead, defensive coordinator Phil Bennett will fill in when the Panthers play Kentucky in Birmingham. Wannstedt, forced to resign Dec. 7, had been given the option of coaching in the bowl but did not tell university officials his decision until today. Although he had been working with players, no doubt he prefers not to deal with the media at the bowl game and got a measure of payback by leaving the athletic department in the lurch.
Meanwhile, the search for Wannstedt's successor was restarted over the weekend. Mike Haywood, the former Miami (Ohio) coach, had been named to replace Wannstedt, but was fired Saturday after being jailed in South Bend, Ind., on a domestic violence charge.
