NFL playoffs live: Ravens-Steelers, Packers-Falcons

By Cindy Boren

As the NFL playoffs enter their second weekend, it's fair to ask, as the Wall Street Journal just did: Is this the apotheosis of the NFL? Facing labor, safety and attendance issues, "all is not perfect in the land of Oz," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello says.

After a week of unprecedented trash talk, is the NFL making the right move by telling teams it will consider previous comments in determining punishment if a player makes an illegal hit?

Peter King factoid of the day: John Harbaugh has won at least one road playoff game in each of his first three seasons as the Ravens' coach; he's coaching his seventh playoff game today (all on the road).

Will NFL assistants form a union? Charley Casserly reports on CBS' pregame show that they'll take a straw poll to determine the level of interest at the scouting combine next month in Indianapolis.

Must announcers refer to Ben Roethlisberger only as "Big Ben?" I haven't heard them say his last name all season. It's not like they're being asked to spell it.

Speaking of Roethlisberger, some Pittsburghers haven't forgotten the allegations that led to a four-game suspension at the start of the season. It's a fandom that's divided.

Did an ESPN reporter divulge a trick play the Steelers were planning to use against the Ravens? If so, does he need to enter witness protection?

My picks: Steelers and Packers; my picks tomorrow: Bears and Patriots. (After going 3-1 last weekend [yep, I picked the Seahawks], I'm prepared to whiff mightily this weekend.) Tell me why I'm wrong.

Herewith, the live, in-game thread. Tweet your way up here (#NFLWP) or dive into the comments.

Oh, no. Dan Dierdorf. Speaking of Dorf, whatever happened to him up here?

Did I hear that there is beer here?

Posted by: kerzon417 | January 15, 2011 4:46 PM | Report abuse

Ah, Ryan Clark.

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 4:46 PM | Report abuse

There is beer here. Help yourself. Pretzels just out of the oven...are being salted now.

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 4:51 PM | Report abuse

Can't find fault with your picks this weekend Cindy (which also are mine).

Thanks for the beer, goes superb with my chips, salsa and tequila!

Posted by: kerzon417 | January 15, 2011 4:59 PM | Report abuse

Feel free to help yourself, Kerzon. There's more where that came from.

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 5:03 PM | Report abuse

Predicting at least one big fight before this game is over.

This game may come down to who has less penalties.

Posted by: kerzon417 | January 15, 2011 5:17 PM | Report abuse

There are also touchdowns lying around, in case anyone wants one.

Posted by: SMACK1 | January 15, 2011 5:18 PM | Report abuse

the whole Baltimore D almost make complete fools outta themselves except for the one guy smart enough to know that you play till you hear the whistle...

Posted by: joek443 | January 15, 2011 5:19 PM | Report abuse

I was kinda yelling that at the TV, SMACK.

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 5:21 PM | Report abuse

In spite of the refs calling interference against the wrong player, 2 missed personal fouls against Pittsburgh, the Ravens are ahead.

Posted by: jameschirico | January 15, 2011 5:22 PM | Report abuse

nice smack!

Dan Dierdorf is gonna make this one loooong game for me.

Posted by: kerzon417 | January 15, 2011 5:22 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 4:33 PM

My Dierdorf hatred ain't what it once was. Remember when he was acting all high-falutin' and rolling his Rs and sjk? They've at least been able to re-program him slightly.

Posted by: SMACK1 | January 15, 2011 5:24 PM | Report abuse

Only guy on the field with a clue is Cory Redding. One of the Steeler could have picked it up and run it down the field for a TD.

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 5:27 PM | Report abuse

Was it Archuleta we gave up Ryan Clark for? How dumb was that? (rhetorical)

Posted by: kerzon417 | January 15, 2011 5:34 PM | Report abuse

Why is it impossible to coach up a teams player to not block in the back? It seems as simple as "don't eat sand".

Posted by: SMACK1 | January 15, 2011 5:37 PM | Report abuse

When I was in bootcamp, drill instructor made me eat sand. I'd rather block in the back.

Posted by: kerzon417 | January 15, 2011 5:41 PM | Report abuse

Ryan Clark...of all the guys to go cheapo on. Sheesh. (Sorry, kerzon.)

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 5:48 PM | Report abuse

kerz, then when you cut one, did it smell like the beach?

Posted by: SMACK1 | January 15, 2011 5:53 PM | Report abuse

maybe Zorn really knows what to do with a QB after all...

Posted by: joek443 | January 15, 2011 5:53 PM | Report abuse

Yes smack, I even tried to sell the idea to Calvin Klein but, like with Kramer, they just stole my idea.

Posted by: kerzon417 | January 15, 2011 6:01 PM | Report abuse

This place is nice. Well done Cindy...Love the rug it really ties the room together.

Shuisham with the miss. Man is he clutch.

Posted by: Diesel44 | January 15, 2011 6:05 PM | Report abuse

Now there is the Swissham I know.

Posted by: kerzon417 | January 15, 2011 6:05 PM | Report abuse

Shank Missham strikes again.

Posted by: SMACK1 | January 15, 2011 6:05 PM | Report abuse

Thanks, Diesel. The dudette abides. This game is taking an eternity.

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 6:08 PM | Report abuse

Not sure why the iggles fired their DC, it's Reid that tries to win in the playoffs with the pass. With McCoy, they should be running the ball more then passing.

Posted by: kerzon417 | January 15, 2011 6:10 PM | Report abuse

Dick Jauron's name mentioned in Philly...Mike Singletary is still out there, but Philly peeps say that's doubtful. Reid's on vaca so it may be a bit before someone is named.

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 6:21 PM | Report abuse

Reid changed his mind from postgame comments last week...

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 6:23 PM | Report abuse

Long way to go here. If the Stillers can stop yacking up on themselves and it's close going into the 4th. Ben will find a way to win.

Having said that I picked the Ravens, Pack, Seahawks, Pats.

Posted by: Diesel44 | January 15, 2011 6:23 PM | Report abuse

Changed his mind? I'm starting to think that ALL HC lie.

Posted by: kerzon417 | January 15, 2011 6:27 PM | Report abuse

Interesting. I didn't think the Ravens would get it done. Went with Seahawks last week...I'm done with them now.

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 6:32 PM | Report abuse

Everybody in sports lies...more deception and subterfuge than anything sinister, but you have to always assume that. Sorry to go all "House" on you.

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 6:35 PM | Report abuse

Reid's on vaca so it may be a bit before someone is named.

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 6:21 PM

Speaking of Reid, when will the Post name his replacement on (1) the Redskins beat and (2) Redskins Insider. Will it be an insider or an outsider? Is Miss South Carolina a serious candidate or is that just rumor/fantasy?

Posted by: beep-beep | January 15, 2011 6:42 PM | Report abuse

Just find it funny when peeps are up in arms when coaches lie. Or GMs. It's part of the bizness.

Looks like this game has turned a 180.

Posted by: kerzon417 | January 15, 2011 6:44 PM | Report abuse

Not sure what the timetable is for replacing the Mayor...the hire will happen as quickly as possible because, you know, stuff occasionally happens on the beat. Miss South Carolina is a definite possibility.

Breaking News! The following areas of Baltimore are currently on fire:

Butcher's Hill, Cheswolde, Darley Park, Falstaff, Gwynns Falls...

Posted by: SMACK1 | January 15, 2011 6:58 PM | Report abuse

Howard Park, Locust Point

Posted by: SMACK1 | January 15, 2011 7:00 PM | Report abuse

I think they let Jim Zorn give the half time pep talk to the Ravens. "Let's get medium."

Posted by: beep-beep | January 15, 2011 7:02 PM | Report abuse

And now it's the Raven's turn to get in their own way.

Posted by: Diesel44 | January 15, 2011 7:03 PM | Report abuse

I guarantee I will hand the game to the Steelers. Joe Flacco

Posted by: jameschirico | January 15, 2011 7:04 PM | Report abuse

I confess I want to see the wackysacky OT rule go into place in this game. Gotta use it sometime.

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 7:18 PM | Report abuse

Yo, beep-beep.

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 7:32 PM | Report abuse

I confess I want to see the wackysacky OT rule go into place in this game. Gotta use it sometime.

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 7:18 PM

Right after Suisham misses another FG. Plus a miss in OT.

Posted by: beep-beep | January 15, 2011 7:39 PM | Report abuse

I want to see the rule taken to the max. Not being snarky (well, okay, a little), I just want to see it in the real world.

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 7:50 PM | Report abuse

No OT, Cindy. The Steelers wisely kept the ball in Roethlisberger's hand and out of Suisham's foot.

Posted by: beep-beep | January 15, 2011 8:01 PM | Report abuse

Well, I still want to see how it'd work.

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 8:04 PM | Report abuse

The big Choke with a capital C.

Posted by: jameschirico | January 15, 2011 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Ward >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the whole B'more WR corp

That was the game. Boldin and Housyomama came up really small.

Posted by: joek443 | January 15, 2011 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Ravens desperately need some young WRs.

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 8:17 PM | Report abuse

And Weems gives his mom the fubball. And drinks her beer.

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 9:00 PM | Report abuse

Longest KO return in postseason history...102 yards for Weems.

Posted by: CindyBoren | January 15, 2011 9:03 PM | Report abuse

How is Tramon Williams not in the Pro Bowl? Oh that's right because they screwed up and DHall is going instead.

Posted by: Diesel44 | January 15, 2011 9:21 PM | Report abuse

beep-beep (new post)

Posted by: Diesel44 | January 15, 2011 9:24 PM | Report abuse

Rodgers is 18-of-21 for 234 yards and 2 TDs for a 144.8 rating. Perfect is 158.3.
