Iran threatens to boycott 2012 London Olympics because of logo

By Cindy Boren

Iran is threatening to boycott the 2012 Olympic Games in London because of the Games' logo.

londonlogo.jpgAccording to an Iranian official, the logo, with its blocky, abstract rendering of "2012," is racist because it appears to spell the word "Zion," a biblical term for Jerusalem, rather than 2012. Bahram Afsharzadeh, the secretary-general of Iran's National Olympic Committee, said via the official IRNA news agency that he sent a letter of complaint to International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge.

"There is no doubt that negligence of the issue from your side may affect the presence of some countries in the games, especially Iran, which abides by commitment to the values and principles," Afsharzadeh said in the letter to Rogge, according to the Associated Press, and urged other Muslim states to protest as well.

The International Olympic Committee and London's organizing committee disagree. "Our response is as follows: The London 2012 logo represents the figure 2012, nothing else," the IOC said.

If you look at it that abstractly it also spells a number of other things including "Tron", "Corn", "AARP", you can even make it spell "Iran".

I think the entire world should boycott the games unless they change this logo, simply because it looks ridiculous.

Posted by: bowmanrand1 | February 28, 2011 4:56 PM | Report abuse

Guess they weren't looking forward to explaining the defection of their entire team, or rather those they hadn't already killed or imprisoned during the demonstrations to the rest of Iran.

Seems to me they would save the ZION logo for the 2102 Olympics. But what do I now?

Posted by: daveb59 | February 28, 2011 5:01 PM | Report abuse

The REAL reason that Iran is boycotting the 2012 Summer Olympics in London is because they can't outfit the proper swim gear for their horses so that their athletes can complete in water polo.

Maybe it's ZORN? Oh, wait, he got a job.

Posted by: daveb59 | February 28, 2011 5:03 PM | Report abuse

I for one, will miss seeing Iran show up . It would bring back visions of the way Russia and the other Cold War Communist countries intimidate judges , especially in the Figure Skating and boxing contests that didn't end up in a knockout. And watching athletes hand back their medals to the committee for infractions and drug use, was a scream . And even more hilarious was when you found a man hiding under a female skin and putting the Shot right out of the stadium. If anything in all of History has worn out it's welcome , it's the Olympics and it's charade of being populated by Amateurs. Why it's becoming almost as hypocritical as the Oscars.

Posted by: puck-101 | February 28, 2011 5:03 PM | Report abuse

Please do not boycott, got to the Olympics otherwise the games will collapse without Iran.
This is Olympic Armageddon.

It looks like C-R-A-P to me, not ZION.

Posted by: nuzuw | February 28, 2011 5:11 PM | Report abuse

it's a zany 2012 I tell ya...and this is sort of old news. This has been reported on a while ago in other news outlets.

Posted by: cbmuzik | February 28, 2011 5:14 PM | Report abuse

Where do these nuts get the time and energy to look for this stuff? Let Iran boycott. The world is safer with them back in their own country.

Posted by: Desertdiva1 | February 28, 2011 5:18 PM | Report abuse

Iran's National Olympic Committee is a bunch of monkeys going bananas. That doesn't change the fact that the logo is hideous.

Posted by: minasaywhat | February 28, 2011 5:21 PM | Report abuse

I actually had to read thru the article to find out what it DID say. What a complete mess. They paid money for it?

As for Iran, what dumb luck we all had being born into this country. Imagine having to live with c'suckers like the Iran government ruling your every day and life. Complete nut jobs.

Posted by: tslats | February 28, 2011 5:36 PM | Report abuse

This has got to be the most hideous logo for any Olympics ever! What morons came up with it, and is it too late to undo their damage?

Posted by: Spiritof761 | February 28, 2011 5:41 PM | Report abuse

I find it hysterical that Iran reads "ZION" in a logo that, many months ago, was widely seen as an image of fellatio. Unless Iran is just OK with the latter.

Posted by: ArlingtonGay | February 28, 2011 5:55 PM | Report abuse

it may be somewhat far fetched, but they have a point there

Iran's government is almost as crazy as ours, which makes me wonder why our government's cant be friends

I see a guy doing this really exagerated bow, the Olympic rings is his head, the bottom right corner is his bent arm and his leg sticking out in front of him, bottom left is his bent knee supporting him and of course, top left is his other arm swept back

Man! And that was the only World leader's name Sarah Palin had memorized!

I guess the Incas were correct. End of The World in 2012!

Oh well, it's worth it if we don't have to endure another synchronized swimming meet or another rhythmic gymnastics "competition".

I didn't realize that Iranians were allowed to leave their country, much less fly on commercial airplanes.

Personally, I think that the logo looks like a five-rings chick with big hair giving London a Lewinsky.

Hey, don't blame me. Its like the old joke about a shrink giving a patient an Ink Spot test and telling the patient that he seems to be preoccupied with sex. "Me," exclaims the patient? "You're the one with all the dirty pictures."

Posted by: hisroc | February 28, 2011 7:11 PM | Report abuse

I don't know which is sillier -- that logo or Iran's complaint.

Posted by: js_edit | February 28, 2011 7:14 PM | Report abuse

Yah - I don't know about Iran or Zion - but that logo is not only lame, but the colors are abusive.

So I am with Iran on this - change the logo!

OOOHHH! The "Camels For Sex" race will have to be postponed.

Posted by: fregameeate | February 28, 2011 7:33 PM | Report abuse

Actually, if you look at it from the right angle, it says "Jews control the world and are planning to destroy Iran". I think they have a point.

Posted by: chadborman | February 28, 2011 7:33 PM | Report abuse

At first glance, it looks like a McDonald's burger campaign that only Royale beef and McRib pork will be served at the Olympics. Just add the slogan "I'm lovin' it" and it's golden arches 'round the world, baby!

Posted by: cklogic | February 28, 2011 8:11 PM | Report abuse

The way things are going in the mid east there won't be an Iran by then!!!!! So who cares!

Posted by: Jimbo77 | February 28, 2011 8:37 PM | Report abuse

If there was a major in college called "How to Be Irritated and Offended By Just About Everything," the classes for that major would be filled with people from the Middle East. The instructors would all be Iranian.

Just another reason why Islam needs to be destroyed. Oh wait, or should we in the West cower in fear of Muslims on an angry rampage?

Posted by: WildBill1 | February 28, 2011 8:42 PM | Report abuse

Hilarious. I have to agree with Bowmanxxx. That is the ugliest logo - bar none - that I have ever seen.

Posted by: acasey2 | February 28, 2011 9:23 PM | Report abuse

1) The logo may be ugly, but it doesn't spell Zion, not by a long-shot.

2) Why should Iranians care one way or another? They are Persians, and they live 600+ miles from Israel. The only reason that it is an issue is because Zionism is Ahmadinejad's pet project for distracting the Iranian people from their plight at home.

Posted by: steve1231 | February 28, 2011 9:55 PM | Report abuse

The logo obviously depicts the Prophet and his wives. It is blasphemous and a fatwa is forthcoming.

Posted by: I-270Exit1 | February 28, 2011 10:06 PM | Report abuse

Well, it's not quite as kooky another description of this logo that I've heard, which is that it looks like Lisa Simpson giving someone fellatio.

Anyway, "Zion" doesn't necessarily have to refer to Zionism. It could be referring to Rastafarianism. Jah be one with Zion. Certainly whoever designed that moronic logo must have been smokin' the mystic herb, brah :) .

What, no Iran at the Olympics!??!

The really tragic thing is that all those gold medals will be asterisk* medals because without Iran, there isn't any real competition.
