Mike McCarthy motivated Packers by having them fitted for Super Bowl rings

By Cindy Boren

Green Bay Packers Coach Mike McCarthy had a different motivational ploy for his players on the eve of Super Bowl XLV: He had them fitted for Super Bowl rings.

"That's our head coach," defensive end Ryan Pickett said, via Tom Silverstein. "He's been the same way all year. He said he thought we were going to win it all, so we should have the rings fitted. After the meeting [Saturday night], we just went out [into the hallway] and they had people there to measure us."

With that out of the way, they can focus on important things, like how many diamonds the rings should have.

"The advice I keep getting from the players," Packers President Mark Murphy said, "is that it should be very gaudy."
