Madoff's Luxurious Tastes, Expensive Toys
Derek Kravitz at The Post's Investigations Blog has done a nice roundup on what alleged $50 billion Ponzi-schemer Bernie Madoff still owns, from his Manhattan apartment to his Palm Beach fishing boat, all of which you can see here.
Julia Fenwick, former office manager for Madoff in London, gave a long interview to Britain's Daily Mail, detailing Madoff's expensive personal tastes. On the one hand, this all comes from a person who is angry over thus far being denied a severance since Madoff has been charged. On the other hand, she was an eyewitness to his activities while in London.
If you thought Dennis Kozlowski's $2.1 million Sardinia birthday party for his wife in 2000 was excessive, think of it this way: That was a one-off.
This is how Madoff rolled every day, according to Fenwick:
-- He collected vintage watches ($2,900 to $72,000) and bought wedding bands to match the color and design of each watch ($525-$1,950).
-- Madoff would call his Saville Row tailor to his London boardroom for fittings two to three times per year. Average cost of suit: $6,000.
-- Madoff traveled in a Brazilian-built Embraer Regional Jet 145 ($29 million) on which he had installed a cappuccino machine ($1,650).
-- In London, he stayed at the Lanesborough Hotel, paying up to $11,600 per night.
-- Madoff threw a barbeque party for 400 on Montauk.
-- He smoked Davidoff cigars. ($160 per box)
The most egregious example of Madoff's questionable taste? He loves Neil Diamond.
"Bernie is the most anally retentive person I have ever met," Fenwick told the Daily Mail. "On the occasions he visited London, we'd spend days before his arrival levelling the blinds, making sure the computer screens were an identical height, lining every picture up straight. No paper was allowed on the desks."
