Senate Passes Stimulus Bill, 61-37

UPDATED WITH ROLL CALL:

The Senate passed the $838 billion stimulus plan with one vote to spare -- 61-37 -- moments ago, sending the bill to President Obama's desk for signing, after the two houses conference.

The Senate vote follows a partisan passage in the House, where it gained no Republican support.

Senate Republicans fought and won spending reductions to the House version of the plan, and gained additional tax cuts.

Republicans voting for the stimulus include both Maine senators, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, and Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Penn.).

Here are the votes against the stimulus bill, all Republicans:

- Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.)
- John Barrasso (R-Wyo.)
- Robert Bennett (R-Utah)
- Kit Bond (R-Mo.)
- Sam Brownback (R-Kan)
- Jim Bunning (R-Ky.)
- Richard Burr (R-N.C.)
- Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.)
- Tom Coburn (R-Okla.)
- Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) 28
- Bob Corker (R-Tenn.)

- Mike Crapo (R-Idaho)
- Jim DeMint (R-S.C.)
- John Ensign (R-Nev.)
- Michael Enzi (R-Wyo.)
- Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.)
- Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa)
- Orrin Hatch (R-Utah)
- Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Tex.)
- James Inhofe (R-Okla.)
- Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.)
- Mike Johanns (R-Neb.)
- Joh Kyl (R-Ariz.)

SHAME, SHAME, SHAME, ON THE DEMOCRATS.

SHAME ON OBAMA. Blacks have a 12.6% unemployment rate and Obama is giving jobs to illegals.

The Democrats, in the Senate, blocked the E-Verify amendment from being voted on, and added to the Stimulus Bill. This means that although the E-Verify amendment is part of the House version, it will be removed politically, by the Democrats, during the House/Senate negotiation, towards the final version. this was a planned action by the Democrats to protect themselves from the ire of their constituents. The House voted 417-2 in favor of E-Verify, the Senators didn't get to vote, so both the Democrats in the House and Senate have an out.

This means that illegals are able to take the jobs created by the Stmulus Bill.

This goes against the wants of Americans, as even before this unemployment crisis, Americans were heavily in favor of the deportation of illegals, and Americans surely do not want illegals taking any jobs that rightfully belong to Americans.

8.7 million illegals have used forged, and/or stolen identities, to illegally obtain jobs that rightfully belong to 11.6 million unemployed Americans. These are jobs in manufacturing and food processing; jobs that Americans will do.

SHAME, SHAME, SHAME, ON THE DEMOCRATS.

SHAME ON OBAMA.

Republican senators are an endangered species. 2010 = the year the American voter invokes cloture.

Thanks President Obama and the Senate for finally doing something to get this economy moving. Right now I could care less about immigration, or partisan BS. Americans are hurting...alot. That takes precedent over hate speech and divisive tactics. We are one nation with one big problem that we all need to solve together and quit blaming people who try to help.

President Obama's Media Trips to Indiana and Florida:

How many 50 foot RV's from Elkhart, Indiana will be part of Obama's Green Economic Stimulus Plan and how many jobs will be restored?

How many RV's that get 3 miles/ gal or 3 gal/mile will recieve exemptions under Obama new CAFE mileage requirements?

Could new RV's receive the $15000 new home tax credit?

How many 2nd homes for Rich Snow Birds in Ft. Myers and Naples Florida will be part of Obama's Foreclosure Rescue Plan?

How many real estate speculators from all over the country that bought in Ft. Myers and Naples Florida will be bailed out by Obama's Foreclosure Rescue Plan?

How will 90% of Obama Stimulus Plan jobs will be private sector, world class, long term, information technology economy jobs?

He doesn't make "walking around sense"

SHAME, SHAME, SHAME ON buzzm1 for being such a one-note johnny.
And shame on the Republicans for offering no ideas besides cutting taxes on the wealthy, which history has proven time and time again is counterproductive to a healthy economy that benefits the middle class.

No, Elrod, SHAME on the Party of No for once again doing nothing but ankle biting and sand bagging ... following years of approving policies that got us into this mess in the first place.

SHAME ON THE REPUBLICANS. Oh, that's right, they have no shame.

This is not an obsession regarding illegal immigrants but a valid argument because it is pointless to stimulate non-American pockets at the expense of American taxpayers. On another note, it should not have taken this long to pass a stimulus bill for citizens. The crappy TARP bill passed in less time.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I'D LOVE TO HAVE THE MONEY TO HIRE A THOUSAND PRIVATE DETECTIVES TO INVESTIGATE ALL OF OUR HEADS OF WASHINGTON DC. ALL OF THEM!! LET'S SEE HOW MUCH DIRT IS IN ALL OF THEIR CLOSETS! I CAN ALMOST BET THERE IS SO MUCH INSIDER BACK WASHING BY BOTH PARTIES THAT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WILL NEVER GET WHAT THEY HAVE BUSTED THEIR AMERICAN BUTTS FOR ALL THESE YEARS!
OBAMA HAS BEEN PRESIDENT FOR A COUPLE OF SHORT WEEKS AND WHILE HE MAY SOUND AS IF HE HAS THE BEST OF INTENTIONS? NANCY AND HARRY DO NOT! TRUST ME IT IS NANCY PALOSI AND HARRY REID WHO RUN THIS COUNTRY.

SOON? BOTH OF THEM WILL RUN IT INTO THE GROUND WITHOUT A SHOVEL.

Is this reporter totally incompetent, totally biased, or both? The Senate passing a bill does NOT send it to the President, after the two houses conference! Both houses of Congress must first vote on the final bill... so there are still two hard-fought votes to go through before it gets to the White House. As for his comment on "partisan passage in the House," what transparent bias! Several Dems voted with the GOP against the bill in the house (that is a partisan vote, see). A few liberal GOPers voted with the Dems to pass the Senate version--but that's not a partisan vote. Nice double standard, proving that what the media mean by "bipartisan" is "whatever liberals want."

While it is good that Congress has finally decided to try solving problems instead of amassing power, I do have questions: On top of this package, the banks are going to get how much? And funding for higher education has gotten cut by how much? What about reinstating many of the firewalls that Congress removed over the last 20 years that led to this situation?

Well thats Wonderful news! Comrades, no longer do our children, grandchildren, and future generations need money that they will earn through the labors they go forth to do in future generations! We'll go ahead and spend it now!

ElrodinTennessee: I'm all for naturalization - which is legal Immigration. I'm not in favor of undocumented residents taking advantage of public services the rest of the honest and legal residents pay for. Or did you want to just allow everyone and anyone on the entire planet to just drop on by and rent subsidized housing, over burden the police force, social services, common defense, fire departments, etc. Most everyone uses/relies those taxpayer funded services, some more than others, but only legal residents actually pay their share. Sales tax on consumer goods does not count. Unless you want to just make the tax system based on consumption alone (sales) then there won't be any way to get around income taxes by not being documented. thoughts?

Let me also state: That as an American I am sickened by the United States political people. Both sides of the isle. The Dems have had congress for two full years already? and what the heck have they actually done!? The financial markets were tanking while they also had their hands in the cookie jar! Not only the Republicans are to blame for the mess we are in. Barney Frank? Are you kidding me? Some of these federal morons PROSECUTED AND CONVICTED MARTHA STEWART OVER WHAT SHE STATED REGARDING $45,000 DOLLARS -- But they allow all of these BILLION DOLLAR MAFIA KINGS A FREE RIDE? Wow!

I want a $35,00 toilet too! So I can flush all of these political b-s-ers down the Washington DC. poop-shoot!

It's not the fault of illegals but of the companies that hire them. Up until the rhetorical scapegoating, most Americans, including Blacks, didn't want to do the jobs illegals were doing, especially if their work benefitted us. We thought these jobs were beneath us. The immigration policy does have to change but don't buy into the racist rhetoric of the extreme right before you research your facts including actual PROOF that illegals pay taxes and use services, like emergency rooms, less than Anmericans. By the way, how far would you go to ensure your family survived, especially with a haphazard and discriminatory immigration policy that wasn't and isn't consisently enforced and not enforced when it comes to politically beneficial immigrants? This includes proof that American companies are decimating foreign societies just like they're doing here and then want us to "buy American", thus paying more than once for being taken advantage of under trade policies that need to be changed.

I'm an equal opportunity ranter.

I try my best to share the rant with all sides of the political isle of our useless government as of late. Useless is an understatement I understand.
I have been a registered Democrat and I have been a registered Republican. I have been disappointed by both sides, sickened by both, and lied to by both.

On both sides of the isle we have had nymphomaniacs, sex offenders, money crooks, liars, and cheats!! NO SIDE HAS BEEN INNOCENT OF ANY OF IT, including using tax funds to pay for their on the road hookers and high priced junkets.

Posted by: caddy-shack-7 | February 10, 2009 1:18 PM | Report abuse

SEDGFLD, what? Stop with the 'racist' term. Nobody here is using that word or idea except for you. I take a lot of offense to that.

Everyone is created equal and we all need to play by the rules - EVERY RULE. Illegal immigrants are not playing by the all the rules, and they don't pay an equivalent proportion of taxes.

I've got an idea, instead of attacking people on a personal level, why don't you comment on the idea of a consumption based tax system? No taxes on income, just consumption. Now don't change the subject to business, the GOP, limbaugh, Bush, Reagan, Obama, the Courts, Congress, or anything else. Just comment on the idea of consumption based tax system.

Additionally, really I don't feel like collecting data, I've got a career to deal with. The weekly local Crime e-report includes descriptions of suspects for every crime committed where there is a witness. Go read three years worth of any Virginia local jurisdiction's weekly crime reports, then come back to me and say that I need to go find some facts.

In lieu of E-Verify being mandated in the final version of the Stimulus Bill, illegals will continue to invade America, and take the jobs provided by the Stimulus Bill.

FACT: In the last 22 years, over 26 million illegals, have been apprehended, after crossing the border, into our United States.

UNITED STATES BORDER APPREHENSIONS (Source DHS/CBP)
1987--1,190,488------1995--1,394,554------2003----931,557
1988--1,008,145------1996--1,649,986------2004--1,160,395
1989----954,243------1997--1,412,953------2005--1,189,075
1990--1,169,939------1998--1,555,776------2006--1,089,902
1991--1,197,875------1999--1,579,010------2007----876,704
1992--1,258,482------2000--1,676,438------2008----723,825
1993--1,327,259------2001--1,266,213------2009----(beginning 10/01)
1994--1,094,717------2002----955,310

THE PROBLEM IS: Less than 1, out of 4 illegals, are estimated to have been apprehended, meaning that 3, out of 4, illegals successfully entered our United States.

According to the U.S. Immigration Service another 6 million illegals in our country are visa overstays. That is, they got a visa legally in their home country, they came here to visit and then they never left.

In the last 22 years, there have been another 4 million anchor babies born to illegals. Anchor babies are now being born at a rate of 350-400 thousand per year in our United States. All at our expense!!

Then the ANCHOR BABIES qualify for welfare, food stamps, section-8 housing, all at our expense.

American Taxpayers are getting screwed, over, and over, and over, again!!!

Each illegal immigrant, on average, costs taxpayers $9,000 PER YEAR, over, and above, anything they might contribute in taxes!!! A total cost to American taxpayers of over 300 billion dollars each, and every, year.

The government has been lying to you......again.

The BIG LIE......

They keep saying there are only 12 million illegal immigrants in our United States.

If anyone is willing to make the bet, I'll give 100-1 odds that there are far more than 12 million illegals, in our United States, and the number of illegals is not decreasing as some would try to have you believe.

Rather, the number of illegals in our United States, continues to increase.

As you all know, the Democrats, in the Senate, blocked the E-Verify amendment, SA 239, from being voted on, and added, to the Stimulus Bill.

This means that, illegals, once the E-Verify amendment is removed from the House version, during House/Senate negotiations, can take any, and all, jobs created by the Stimulus Bill.

Americans, Democrats, and Republicans, alike, cannot allow this to happen.

There are already 8.7 million illegals working at on-the-books jobs that they used forged, and/or stolen, identities, to illegally obtain.

E-Verify will rectify this situation, but first it must be added to the Final Stimulus Bill.

This will not happen without action, and rightful outrage, BY ALL AMERICANS!!!

TAKE ACTION TODAY!!!

Geithner's presentation behaviors indicate he realizes he's in over his head, that he is not qualified for the job Obama gave him, and he's resorting to defensive bureaucratic responses. “We will have to adapt our program as conditions change. We will have to try things we’ve never tried before,” he said. “We will make mistakes. We will go through periods in which things get worse and progress is uneven or interrupted.” If you were a shareholder in a bank that was considering lending his company one or two TRILLION dollars, would you be in favor of trusting him with the money? Didn't think so. It's not really HIS fault, Obama GAVE him the job, and Obama will be responsible for what happens, (though he will NEVER admit it!)

All,
I read a few NOT all comments.
I’ll try to be as bipartisan as possible.
I think we should refrain from stating that tax cuts did not work.
In 1999 and 2000 we were entering a recession. We lost a lot ( i cant get exact numbers) of jobs due to the DotCom bubble burst and the Y2K bug. Then one year later, just as we started to get some jobs back, 9/11 happened. I remember my company cut IT in half in 2000.
By 2005 we had all the jobs back plus some additional and the unemployment rate was low. All this was accomplished with NO stimulus. It was at the end of 2006 and 2007 when things started to disintegrate due to a housing crisis. Without placing blame here (you can research this on your own), this was the turning point of our economy. We can easily say that the housing market is to blame for everything. The reason all the banks are imploding is due to sub-prime mortgage’s being traded and then companies extending themselves 10 times over. Of course there is greed include but the ground work was laid for that.
Tax cuts worked from 2000 to 2006. We needed more but we got more spending instead.
To say the last 8 years were a failure may not be accurate. That said, the last 3 years have been a failure.

I'm very impressed with the stats Buzzm1 provided. What bothers me most about e-verify not being included in the stimulus bill is the obvious flaw that introduces. It has already been mentioned here, but let me reiterate that this stimulus bill will bring many jobs to the very industries that hire the most illegals; contruction, hospitality & medical. If e-verify was included & enforced, the stimulus bill would truly help Americans, but as it is it will only server to bring more & more illegals back across the borders. It will be interesting to see how Ms. Napolitano flops on this question, being the Sec of Homeland Defense, & former Gov of Arizona where she advocated the passage of a bill that would have made it law to fine the employer $10,000 for the first offense of hiring illegals without checking their status, & permanent revocation of their business lisences in Arizona for a second offense. It would be interesting to know the immigrant status of Pelosi & Ried's domestic staff, wouldn't it?

The jobs that most illegal are doing are in areas like farm, cleaning, restaurants, riding bikes like crazy on the streets of NY delivering food, construction etc. I disagree with those who cry complaining that illegal will take the jobs created by the Stimulus Bill but strongly recommend them to improve themselves so they are not on a situation where an immigrant can take their farm, or bath cleaning job job..
