Markets Squeeze Out a Gain

Stock markets were all over the chart today, swinging from positive to negative and back again almost every hour. Investors rallied toward the end, however, finishing in the happy place for the day and the week.

The Dow closed up .5 percent at 8,017, the best finish in more than a month. The S&P 500 was up 1 percent to 842, while the Nasdaq also gained 1 percent to 1,620. Both the Dow and the S&P gained more than 3 percent for the entire week, while the Nasdaq jumped 5 percent.
