Obama: 'Encouraging day' despite no change in 9.7% unemployment rate

UPDATED 12:45 p.m.

The official U.S. unemployment rate in March remained unchanged at 9.7 percent, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday.

A total of 162,000 new jobs were created on non-farm payrolls--the biggest one-month jobs gain in the past three years, but still well below what economists were predicting.

Most forecasters had expected about 200,000 new jobs to be created in March. The difference is largely attributable to fewer census workers than expected being hired by the government. But analysts say the numbers also illustrate the slow and wobbly nature of the ongoing economic recovery.

Christina Romer, chair of the White House's Council of Economic Advisers, said the monthly employment report offered evidence of "gradual labor market healing."

"...[I]t is obvious that the American labor market remains severely distressed," Roemer said in a statement. "...While this is the most positive jobs report we have had in three years, there will likely be bumps in the road ahead."

More than 6.5 million Americans have been unemployed for six months or longer--a record high, the data showed.

What many consider a truer unemployment rate -- which includes the underemployed and those who have given up looking for work -- came in at 16.9 percent in March, its second straight monthly increase.

President Obama, who often travels on days jobs numbers are announced, celebrated the news with fewer caveats than usual, The Post's Anne E. Kornblut reported from North Carolina, where she is with the president.

“I’ve often had to report bad news during the course of this year, as the recession wreaked havoc on people’s lives. But today is an encouraging day,” Obama told workers at Celgard LLC, an advanced battery technology manufacturer in Charlotte, N.C. whose warehouse he toured on Friday morning. “We learned that the economy actually produced a substantial number of jobs instead of losing a substantial number of jobs,” he said, drawing applause.

“This month, more Americans woke up, got dressed and headed to work in an office, a factory, a storefront,” he said. “More folks are feeling the sense of pride and satisfaction that comes with a hard-earned and well-deserved paycheck.”

In visiting Celgard, Obama sought to highlight the effectiveness of his economic policies. With help from the administration’s stimulus package, the company is hiring 300 new workers in North Carolina – and expanding its operations making batteries that run more fuel-efficient cars.

“Before I took office, we had the capacity to make less than 2 percent of the world’s lithium ion batteries,” Obama said. “In the next 5 years, on the trajectory we’re now on, we’re going to be able to make 40 percent of the batteries right here in the United States of America.”

That, he said, is an argument for the stimulus package. “Next time somebody asks you at the grocery store, ‘What did the recovery act do?’, you can tell them one of the things it helped do is expand…an entire industry.”

The Commerce Department expects to hire at least 600,000 temporary workers this year to staff the 2010 Census survey. Forecasters expected a bump of 100,000 census hires in March. But only 48,000 were hired. In other sectors, some 40,000 temporary health service workers were hired in March, while the financial sector shed 21,000 jobs.

Average hourly earnings dropped 0.1 percent in March after climbing 0.2 percent in February.

Forecasters had expected the unemployment rate to remain unchanged at 9.7 percent. Analysts say it will be difficult for this economy to start creating a meaningful number of new jobs until the weekly new jobless claims number gets down into the low 400s and stays there. The number of new jobless claims filed last week dipped slightly, down 6,000 to 439,000.

The unemployment rate hit its recent high of 10.1 percent in October. Economists and forecasters expect the rate to hover near 10 percent for at least the remainder of the year. The White House does not expect the rate to return to its healthy-economy level of 5 percent until at least 2017. Following the end of each previous modern recession, the unemployment rate has stayed high for months, if not quarters,

The unemployment rate has become a political issue for the Democratic Party, which for now controls both the White House and Congress. The party faces pressure to create new jobs without incurring further wrath from Republicans and other deficit hawks, who say that additional government-subsidized stimulus and jobs bills will add dangerously to the budget deficit and national debt.

Congress has been too obsessed with health care reform during this past year. JOBS were not the priority of the present administration or Congress. We have had a democratic majority in Congress since the last two years of the Bush presidency. So I suppose we can lay the blame on Bush!
So for all the unemployed and the underemployed out there, how is that "hope and change" working out for you?

Things are moving in the right direction, finally. To any unemployed workers who got discouraged and stopped looking, dust off that resume and get out there again! Best of luck to you.

Thank goodness for the census hiring. Just wait until businesses begin shedding jobs because of health care reform and state and local government bite the bullet for the enormous share they will bear because of that same health care reform. Then with higher unemployment the democrats will want even longer-lasting benefits for more jobless folks, plus the hikes in taxing and spending will kick in for health care, just when the census workers are all laid off.

Hope and change sucks!

They don't tell you that your earning power has been cut in half or more. If you used to make $100k you would be very hard pressed to find that same job offering $40k-$50k. And if you don't take the job because its beneath you, you worked the last 15-20 years to get higher salary, they give to some foreigner who didn't take ESL or pass a test to enter the country just to fill the position. The dumbing down of America!!

Only a newspaper totally in the tank for Wonder Boy would characterize a situation where the unemployment rate remains close to 10% for month after month as a "recovery." That's not a recovery, that's a continued recession.

I'm only judging WB's policies by his own standards. We were promised that passing the stimulus would keep the unemployment rate from rising to any more than 8%. So, ipso facto, every month it is higher than that, they are a failure.

Posted by: dcjimd | April 2, 2010 9:19 AM | Report abuse

What "recovery"" . . . there's no recovery. One of these days the media should do the country a favor, stop shilling for Obama and report the true state of this stagnant economy. Reporting these conditions as positives is a blatant, pandering lie.

This is moderately hopeful news. The trend has been heading up and in March, the economy has broken past to add jobs to the economy. Actually, the data that not all the gain can be attributed to census hires is positive news. Slowly but surely, the economy is getting better. Hopefully, the next months will continue this trend.

Look on the bright side. As long as unemployment benefits hold out - middle class Americans can sign on for State Medicaid a their primary health insurance.

OR ... they can buy any private health insurance without fear of being denied because of a pre-existing condition ... if they can afford the premiums.

Other polls asked Americans what their greatest fear is and most replied that Obama and Congress are not focusing on the real concerns - the economy and jobs. Many said they did not feel it was unrealitstic to presume they would be unemployed or under-employed for at least two more years.

This is a bunch of Pelosi (it's worse than BS). No one knows where the jobs were 'created' except for new hires by the feds. Further, calculated into the jobs are the temporary (for now) census takers - how much do you want to lay that they find permanent jobs before their temp status expires (more jobs created). Additionally, the total unemployment now is above 21%, which takes into account those that no longer qualify for unemployment and those that have just given up (besides, they're counting on Obama money to bail them out). Also, those shovel ready jobs; they're the ones following the Reid parade in Searchlight. Go to http://mywastedtaxdollars.org/ and see where some of your taxes (well, at least those that do pay taxes) go.

Wait a minute, I thought you Repugs said the Government should not be telling the private sector what to do? Aren't they the ones supposed to create jobs? You gave them the tax breaks, they employed foreigners and now its Obama's fault.

Every economist out there agrees that its impossible to turn the job market around that is this bad in less than 24 months, but some how only when the Repugs are in control do the economists opinions matter.

At least the country has stopped hemorrhaging thanks to a president witch command of the English language and a lot more.

Obviously few people posting here understand economics. Why not go get a job, this one doesn't suite you.

Posted by: xxx1 | April 2, 2010 9:40 AM | Report abuse

This is excellent news, and in keeping with what the White House and economic forecasters expected, namely that we have a definite economic recovery, albeit one where job creation will be slow.

Still, job creation of 162,000 is nothing to sneeze at, especially after a 3 year slump. Whatever one's political affiliation, one should welcome this news, more evidence that this stimulus has worked. The President, the Democrats, and Senators Snowe and Collins should be commended for pushing the stimulus through. It would have been better had the stimulus been larger with more job creation provisions, but the White House had to cut those out to win Snowe and Collins' support.

Still, good news.

Posted by: jaysit | April 2, 2010 9:41 AM | Report abuse

The first sign of recovery is leveling off. This is a good sign and now we can begin rebuilding. The job numbers are misleading a bit as it’s the added part time census workers that make up the largest percentage of the 162,000 jobs. But still better.

The statistic that determines the unemployment rate is based on the week of the 12th of the previous month. The number of hours worked at the sample companies is measured up or down to determine the rate.

Now, that doesnt really mean that people got hired or fired - just that they were either at their desk or didnt show up for work for a full 40 hours that week. It can be skewed by overtime (+), snowstorms (-)(like last month!), temp hiring surges (+), a flu epidemic that keeps everybody home (-), too many workers on vacation at the same time that week (-), or deer hunting season (YES REALLY!)(-).

I keep hearing that some employees have "given up" - IS THAT REALLY AN OPTION? My grandparents taught us you work or you dont eat! So there are no accounting jobs? You go vacuum floors or flip burgers somewhere! Nobody is hiring? Then you sell on Ebay or go door to door offering to mow lawns or shovel snow! But what you DONT do is EVER "give up." It is hard and it sucks but life goes on and nobody gets to just drop out!

It looks like it's higher than forecasters' estimates. The total number is 38,000 lower (200,000 - 162,000) which can be more than accounted for my the 52,000 (100,000 - 48,000) overestimated for census jobs.

They range in prices from $40 to $150. I went with a service that charged $49 and was very happy - so you don't have to spend and arm and leg to get this done. I do believe it was worth it to me. I am employed now and quite relieved! I wish the best for all others job hunting out there.

Let me try to put these numbers in an historical perspective.

President Reagan cut taxes at the very beginning of his terms. Unemployment INCREASED and averaged over 10% during his second year.

President Clinton raised taxes at the very beginning of his terms. These were not cut during his administration. 20,569.000 new PRIVATE SECTOR jobs were created.

President Bush cut taxes over $2 TRILLION during his terms. 417,000 new private sector jobs were created during his terms.

The lesson is clear.

It takes leadership with a vision

Just wait a darn minute. What are the USA Governor’s, and US senators, US House of Representatives, and Mayors are doing collectively to create jobs within their own states?

Is everyone waiting for the President and congress to do everything?

It takes leadership to create new jobs within their own communities. For some of you keep saying that the stimulus did not work, need to understand the intent of the package. For some of you that did not notice the GDP, growth, need to understand the connections between the stimulus package and the GDP.

It is your God giving right to knock the WAPO, for a fair and balance reporting, but is it wise to stay angry at any good news that is reported.

For example: All the alley lights that presently, tide onto the electric grid can be eliminated, by replacing them with off the grid street lights that are powered by solar panel and wind power. The storage batteries has ten days capacity and the cost saving and break even analysis is two years and can create hundreds of thousands of new jobs and consumes less energy and less carbon in our atmosphere.

All a governor has to do is issue a directive that clearly states his position of solar and wind power agenda.

It takes leadership with a vision, to create jobs, and to blame the president for everything is plain foolish. Imagine the employers that hate the president as some of you do; is that ever an intangible or causation as to why forty thousand new jobs fell short? Or is it some of you just want this president to fail at any cost?

We just arent a manufacturing country any more. Things that need to be churned out by the thousands can be done cheaper elsewhere by people paid a lot less. Our workers want lifetime employment guarantees, high salaries, and health (etc) benefits. Nobody in Guatamala or Malaysia are asking for those things. And if nobody is buying or paying a big price (i.e., enough to pay back the manufacturing costs of all those salaries and benefits on top of the materials).

What we DO completely rock at though is the "brain" industries - technology! Not weaving the cotton into cloth but designing the clothes, designing, making and repairing the machine that does the weaving, printing, and cutting.

I support the President and I think the stimulus jobs were a good idea but realistically, folks dont want "shovel ready" jobs because nobody wants to be outside using the "shovel" in 100 degree heat or 10 degree cold. There are plenty of office and "brain" jobs that need to be done - like converting all those old medical records over to computerized systems, tracking Medicare/Medicaid spending to weed out fraud, etc.

Posted by: sally62 | April 2, 2010 10:19 AM | Report abuse

Let's assume most of the negative comments here come from a fear of the unknown, and from a sense of being powerless.

Putting the current job situation in perspective might help. The last time we saw similar unemployment figures (actually slightly higher than those we see these days) was in 1982 and 1983 during Ronald Reagan's first term as President. Historically, a rise in unemployment takes some time to decline. For example, it wasn't until 1986 that figures in the high 6% level came about.

So the main lesson is this: As a nation, we've lived through this before (and will no doubt revisit the apex of the cycle as the decades pass). Don't be so afraid; there's no reason to be hysterical. Meeting challenges with a positive spirit and a determined will is the American way.

The truth is all that needs to be said. Unemployment rates stayed at 9.7% and the underemployment rate ROSE to 20.3%. Taken out ALL government hiring and that 162,000 number drops substantially. Now wait and see what negative effects the health care bill monstrosity will have on private sector hiring. Like I said, no spin needed.... the truth will suffice.

Only an ignorant sourpuss with a little understanding of economics would see reporting of sustained 9.7 percent unemployment as a pro-Obama conspiracy.

It doesn't take much insight to realize that in this growing country, the American job force grows every month.

It only takes middle-school math to understand that if the base number of workers is growing, but the unemployment rate remains the same, the economy is adding jobs.

Additionally, it takes a morally warped person to see, after nearly three years of economic destruction, an unemployment rate that is not getting any worse is a good outcome.

The actual jobs gain is hard to determine since some of those so-called jobs created were actually jobs "saved' by 'stimulus money'. When the money is gone,so are the jobs. Also, most of the job creation is not in the private sector where it needs to be. Since the only source of income for the government is tax dollars, government jobs are jobs that are paid for out of the workers salaries. When everyone is working at government jobs, the jobs can not last. You can't take all the workers production, give it to a government administrator and let that administrator distribute it and hope to have full employment. Only an idiot would think that government paid jobs are the answer. It never has worked where ever it has been tried. The math does not add up.

So much posturing and partisan nonsense. The truth is that our economic crises was the result of the housing bubble, which took many years to build up under both Rep and Dem administrations. Bush and Obama have had virtually the same policies to combat the crises - bail out our financial institutions to prevent a meltdown and stimulate the economy (resulting in big deficits). Bernanke and Geithner are the same architects of our economic policy as in the Bush administration! If John McCain had been elected, the economic numbers would be about the same. Why is everthing a partisan issue?

Repeating lies hardly changes anything. Fawn had a Republic Party goofball congressman on his show at the Reagan Library, and the kook says Obama has run up more debt that all presidents combined. And the audience BELIEVED this nut.

As we all know, RAYGUN tripled the national debt to 3 trillion, Dumya Sr. added more than a trillion, Clinton added a trillion and Dumya Jr doubled it to just shy of 12 trillion. Obama is on his first budget, with a projected deficit of 1.2 trillion, and that's likely to shrink because of rising government revenues.

OMG. Jobs added to the economy.

Question: When will the horrors cease and we can get back to plummeting job losses of the Bush Administration?

Answer: When we elect a GOP President.

The conservatives can spin this any way they want. Most people don't follow jobs reports anyway. Consumer spending is increasing and consumer confidence is increasing. These jobs numbers are just a harbinger in the what the GOP has to look forward to in November. And they ain't happy about these numbers.

I trust conservative have put their money where their mouths are. If they did, they shorted the markets when Obama was sworn in and you had your head handed to you. Go ahead double your bet and short the markets more.

Funny how Republicans spin the unemployment rate, given that under Bush 43 the unemployment rate supposedly went down--due to no longer counting part-timers, those who'd run out of benefits, and those who'd stopped looking.

Where were your protestations when this happened? For that matter, where were your protestations about spending under Republicans? Oh, that's right: "Deficits don't matter" when you're in power. Where were your protestations about keeping war spending "off the books?"

tunatofu ~ cut it with the AFL-CIO talking points. Fact is we continue to be a major manufacturing country ~ THE MAJOR one in fact.

Sure, fewer workers are needed now but that's a consequence of our vast array of computerization, automation, mechanization and roboticization.

American productivity improvements over the last 75 years have been truly fantastic.

Some classes of products have gravitated abroad ~ e.g. shoes and kitchenware. The production of both requires a substantial labor input for packing, stacking and racking. You want a jet airplane though, you come to Uncle eh!

Even highway repair work is now done by mechanized daisy chains of machines. Instead of workmen shoveling bitumin into holes in the road, a computer uses its laser to find the hole, and then directs the bitumin excretor to dump exactly the right amount for the repair and then has the tamper tamp it.

A couple of guys watch this machine, but more recently they've stopped bothering to carry shovels (for show).

We had a road repair system come in and totally rip up our asphalt payment in our community, replace it with new pavement, and do that in a long continuous process without a break in the action.

So much for Obama's "shovel ready jobs".

Does not happen anymore.

Eventually the American robots will build everything. Your job will be to watch the robot!

It's interesting to see some tossing around figures related to the "under-employed." How is that measured? It seems subjective--rather than related to verifiable data. Who is collating and presenting those statistics?

Are the "under-employed" those who feel that the work they do for money is beneath them? Or not in keeping with their level of experience, intelligence, or skill?

If so, changing that problem is part of the "pursuit of happiness"--and it's your challenge, not that of any government entity. We should not expect the government to make our lives fulfilling; that's part of personal liberty and responsibility to the self. You must plot your own path to fulfilling work.

There's a big difference between not having a job (obviously bad), and simply not having a job that befits you vision of yourself (a personal challenge).

"I'm not turning anybody away — that would be unethical," Dr. Jack Cassell, 56, a Mount Dora urologist and a registered Republican opposed to the health plan, told the Orlando Sentinel on Thursday. "But if they read the sign and turn the other way, so be it."

The sign reads: "If you voted for Obama … seek urologic care elsewhere. Changes to your healthcare begin right now, not in four years."

This is basically no news story about jobs--the economy has bottomed out, but real unemployement will continue rising until at least 250,000 new jobs are added monthly. With 400,000 new jobs added monthly, the pool of unemployed would start dropping by 150,000 monthly. At that rate, it still will take 7 years to eliminate the 15 million unemployed people looking for full time work.

The private sector is shot. The only hope is a major public jobs program like the WPA or CCC in the 1930s when 4 or 5 million jobs were created.

The job loss started some time ago, it will take some time (as in years) to reverse. We have experienced a fundamental shift in the nature of our economy as far as what we produce, where we produce it, and who buys it (or doesn't buy it at all). Despite what either political party would like to claim, there is only so much any administration or congress can do to influence job loss of this nature and magnitude. Anyone who lost a job because the industry they worked in shifted is not going to suddenly become qualified to work in another industry, especially in a recession when every industry is treading water by getting the people already in it to work longer and harder.

You can pretend you have control of your boat and that you are the captain of your dinghy. You can row your boat as fast or slow as you want and in any direction you want. Ultimately, you can't change the direction and rate of flow of the river your rowing against—you still have to let the situation that is bigger than yourself follow it's natural course of progression.

In addition, as many as 8 million illegal aliens hold jobs.

So, declare a moratorium on legal immigration and crack down on unscrupulous employers who hire illegals, and you could free up over 20 million jobs for Americans in a year!

Over the month, employment changed little in transportation and warehousing,
leisure and hospitality, retail trade, and wholesale trade.

In March, financial activities shed 21,000 jobs, with the largest losses occur-
ring in insurance carriers and related activities (-9,000). Employment in the
information industry decreased by 12,000.

The only jobs Barry Sotero, our Kenyan stand-in for president, has created, is in the federal governemnt, that will soon have more employees than all private sector companies combined. This is Barry's goal, and if you think otherwise, you are mistaken. The federal governemnt now owns insurance companies, auto companies, education, banks, and healthcare delivery systems. This is after all the add-on in Wshington. If you like socialism, you are in the right place. If you prefer freedom of choice, you need to vote this fake and his cabal out of office.

For Roemer to call the economy wobbly is an understatement, but it is refreshing to see the White House's honesty that full employment (5%) will not happen until 2017 or later. This is a scary thought for those that are unemployed or under-employed. There is little the President or Congress can do and it most certainly will have a huge impact on the 2010 mid-term elections. America is in a difficult position, we cannot raise taxes because it will definitely kill the recovery, we cannot cut taxes because the decreased tax revenues will increase the deficit. I suspect that the White House realizes all this and is fully prepared to face the inevitable consequences of the mid-term election debacle that faces the democrats. Let’s hope the Chinese continue to buy our T-Bills and the baby boomers hold off retirement for as long as possible. What a mess....

Our economy is responding to a number of major trends. One is the very acute downturn that started in the fall of 2008 as a result of the crisis in the financial system. The recent jobs numbers do provide some evidence of a real recovery from the very sharp impact of this event. But these numbers provide no reliable prediction for the future. At least four trends are impacting the economy in ways nobody can reliably anticipate. One is the aftermath of the most excessive stock market bubble at least since the beginning of the 19th century. It broke in 2000. But, we have yet to see the bottom that has followed past stock market super cycles. The second is the recent real estate bubble. Real Estate prices vary with a less regular cycle than stocks. But the recent valuation peak was clearly the most excessive within available American records. Both much of the psychology that lead to the boom and much of the bad debt that resulted from it remain to be resolved. The third is the trade deficit. At lease within the available NIPA records, before 1980 we had balanced trade, neither a surplus or a deficit. Since 1980 we have had a trend toward an ever increasing trade deficit that was only broken by the recent global contraction. Only time will tell whether the downward trend will resume in a real recovery. The fourth is the long term human trend toward increasing worker productivity. The arrival of automation has added a big push to that trend that is likely to be sustained into an indefinite future. There is no possibility of even recognizing shifts in these trends on a monthly basis. Only time will tell how they and perhaps others bump the shorter term factors driving the economy and what kind of trajectory in jobs and spending emerges over the next couple of years.

The last time that unemployment was higher was the first 2 years of the Reagan administration.
Ronnie always blamed it on the previous administration and, in the end resorted to accounting gimmicks to convince Americans that things were improving.

Many commenters here don't understand that, after a major financial crisis, GDP usually remains depressed for several years, and unemployment for even longer. I know it's hard to ask people to be patient when friends and family are without work, but the recovery is actually well ahead of where countries usually are at this stage.

The New York Times lead story is breaking the same news with a more honest head:

"Job market brightens as payrolls surge in March"

I point this out only to show that the Washington Post is NOT a liberal newspaper; currently it is has a clearly right wing agenda in all stories and commentary.

The NYTimes may still be a liberal newspaper but the quality of the reporting and commentary shames that of The W Post. That's sadd and badd.

Years back our congress and President allowed jobs to move from our shores. The jobs now are in Europe, Asia, Middle East and South American and Canada. Our government sold us out on jobs. We will never get back all the jobs that have been lost. Most of the jobs will be low paying. This started back in the late 1980s and 1990s moving jobs out of America. We Americans did not get listened to by our Government. Big corporations and business run this country, they are all about profits no matter where they come from. They don't care about this country surviving or the people making a wage. Wall Street wants profits so the big money people make their big bonuses and salaries. Just think these financial people made bonuses on the money we loaned to them to bail them out and save their companies. These CEOs and Wall Street are thieves, nothing else. The funds managers reported they made billions in bonuses on our money. Are you getting it? I suggest you get more active with your senators and representatives, because they are not listening to us right now.

I think that the Republicans say it best about their own people.
Floyd Brown-a longtime GOP fundraiser and consultant—explained that the scandal points up the insularity of the Republican party's national leaders.

"The Republican party itself is a big part of the problem," said Brown, who now operates a website called ExposeObama.com. "It's controlled by Washington DC-based operatives that are out of touch with normal people. It's an establishment-led party."

and

Tony Perkins—the head of the influential Family Research Council—has called on supporters to stop giving money to the RNC in the wake of the scandal.

"This latest incident is another indication to me that the RNC is completely tone-deaf to the values and concerns of a large number of people from whom they seek financial support," he wrote on the group's website. "I've hinted at this before, but now I am saying it—don't give money to the RNC. If you want to put money into the political process, and I encourage you to do so, give directly to candidates who you know reflect your values."

Say what you want about Democrats, but no matter what you say against what the reports are saying, things are getting better in the country.

Guess what? This is working, oh ye of little knowledge.

Compare this relatively quick uptick in job creation to what happened under the reign of Ronald Reagan, that Patron Saint of Conservatives when he presided over the recession of 1982-1984. We had a year of unemployment at over 10% (almost 5 months at 10.8%). In contrast, unemployment under this President peaked at 10% and reached that peak for only about 45 days.

Go back and learn a little history, and while you're at it learn some manners and decorum. It's almost like this improved economic news brought out the most rabid wingnuts foaming at the mouth. You may be pissed off that the economy is rebounding, but the rest of America will take it, thanks be to Obama, Bernanke, and the Democratic Congress.

$767 Billion Stimulus Plan + $14 Jobs Plan = ZERO! Obama and the Dems have spent 13 months throwing away taxpayer money and increasing teh national debt with absolutely nothing to show for it - they must be removved.
-----------
You should go back and read about the stimulus plan and then you can realize how many of the things in it only go into effect over the next three years. I think they have plenty to show for it, but since they can't get you a job, or do exactly what you want them to do, they obviously are failures. Do not expect anyone to come and help you as an individual. You need to help yourself and not depend on others.

-----------
Congress has been too obsessed with health care reform during this past year. JOBS were not the priority of the present administration or Congress. We have had a democratic majority in Congress since the last two years of the Bush presidency. So I suppose we can lay the blame on Bush!
So for all the unemployed and the underemployed out there, how is that "hope and change" working out for you?
------------------
I will not lay the blame anywhere except on the individual. Why people think the government is going to create a job that magically pays what the individual thinks they deserve to get paid is beyond me. The only questions I ask are, are you educated and if so are you educated in fields of study that are relevant to todays work force? And, Do you think you are worth more that what the job duties entail? Last I saw, there are 750 thousand jobs open right now as long as you have degrees in, engineering, health care, finance, math and sciences. I see that Americans rank 34th in these areas, making many companies have to look overseas for people that have the ability to do the job, what should we do about that? I see that even when there is a qualified person to do the job they are often passed up and the job goes to an overseas person who is equally qualified but asks far less in pay to do the same job. Being overseas doesn't matter, technology makes it so you can be anywhere and do the work required of you. What should we do? In the future more jobs that any monkey can do will be automated. This means that in the future unless you are highly skilled, there will not be jobs for you in America.

Jobless at 9.7%? They must think the US citizens a bunch of idiots. WE KNOW ITS MORE LIKE 25%!!!! And yet, they still tell everyone, "Its all right, everything is fine... go spend your money." They don't tell you that your earning power has been cut in half or more.
-------------
I am a white American. Everyone I know has a job, so I do not see it as 1 out of every 4 does not. I will though be happy to do the same exact job that you were doing for the last 15-20 years for even less than $40k thus making sure that you have overpriced yourself completely out of your career. I am so glad that you feel that there are jobs beneath you. You obviously think yourself better than others and that is your first mistake. You can be better at something than someone else, but you can never be better than someone else. If you think you are better than others, in reality you are not. Just keep looking around at your things and deny what I have said, it is alright. What you do for yourself dies with you, it is what you do for the world that lives on for eternity.

To the poster that that thinks Republicans need to spin this. This is not good news, it does not need spin. The policies pursued by this administration have gotten us to where we are. Why actively pursue policies that destroys job creation?

We promise to tax businesses more, we promise to raise energy taxes, we promise to make businesses spend more on health insurance. The president and the out of control congress are doing everything in their power to hold down the economy and keep people jobless.

I think in their misguided logic, they believe that more misery for the American people is an electoral winner for Democrats.

Angie12106 writes (in response to the article's quote: 'Nevertheless, it was the biggest one-month jobs gain in the past three years.'): "Woohoo! Bush didn't create one job in 2008 - and KNEW in 2007 that the economy was collapsing!
After Bush announced the economic collapse in Sept. 2008 - did he initiate an investigation into HOW it occurred before he swaggered back to Texas? ha! NO - that would have required Bush & his Goldman-Sachs Treasury Secreatry to expose their buds on Wall Street"

Angie12106 writes: "The Stimulus has created PRIVATE jobs - and ALL REPUBLICANS, except 2 senators, VOTED AGAINST CREATING Stimulus JOBS! If we'd gone the Republican route - the unemployment rate would be 30% or higher."

Angie12106 writes: "What is the GOP solution for unemployment? Tax cuts for Billionaires which FAILED during the Bush Error.....'Tax cuts create jobs.' - Bush - LOLOLOL"
--------------------------------------
A few clues for the clueless Angie:

1. The biggest one month job gains in the last three years can be completely attributed to the hiring of Census workers.

2. Tax cuts for the private sector free up capital so that businesses can expand labor. Conversely, raising taxes on businesses, as Obama and the Democrats are doing, destroys jobs, as we are witnessing today.

3. Please explain how the Stimulus created private jobs. The stimulus certainly created temporary government jobs, that is clear, jobs that will dry up as my tax dollars are spent and depleted.

And by the way, dove369, your posts are hysterical. they will be much less entertaining once you learn how to write properly and think critically.

It isn't jobs its businesses. Businesses are the folks who create the need for jobs and employees.

For eight years Junior-Bush and his cronies wantonly wholesale destroyed viable US businesses on his watch to enrich his buddies at the cost of destroying our country's and the world's infrastructure and economies. Remember the IT bubble. He exported the thriving, well paying, US IT businesses to India, China, and other a-holes of the earth where labor is dirt cheap. The bubble burst. When the businesses closed, their employees were left jobless. These businesses have not been replaced. The US and the world banking system have been raped to enrich Junior-Bush cronies, causing this depression.

It takes decades for needs to be created and then to build businesses to fulfill those needs. The service sector is growing; however, how many more hamburger joints can a population with less and less money support?

Create jobs? First you have to create businesses then it is up to these businesses to create jobs. For a viable economy everyone cannot be working for the US Government or Government contracts either directly or indirectly as we are doing now.

Mainly because their parents lived like that and taught them the same. The difference, my parents were the first in their family to graduate from a college, while so many more people are going to college. Did you really think that more people going to and graduating from college was magically going to create so many more jobs for skilled people with good pay? So this created "jobs" report is entirely a function of Census hiring. Part time jobs that will last through the summer is better than a sharp stick in the eye, but still more evidence of a prolonged jobless recovery.

This Administration can't create anything other than government jobs, paid for by borrowing from the oil producers and the Chinese. Nor should they be expected to.

What they can do is create a climate that engenders job growth in the private sector. That's tough to do, however, when you've spent the last fifteen months demonizing the very people you depend upon to turn things around and save your sorry @ss.

HERES REAGANS UNEMPLOYMENT NUMBERS:

1981 7.62

1982 9.71

1983 9.60

1984 7.51

1985 7.19

1986 7.00

1987 6.18

1988 5.49
OBAMA
2009 9.26

the unemployment rate stood at 9.7% in March—unchanged for three straight months—even as the labor force expanded. Although the economy appears to be pulling out of a recession, the jobless rate is expected to remain high for some time, especially as discouraged workers reenter the labor market. A separate survey finds that the economy added 162,000 payroll jobs in March after losing 14,000 jobs in February. Payrolls got a big boost from temporary jobs—48,000 federal government workers hired for the 2010 census and 40,000 for other jobs. But manufacturing payrolls also increased for the third month in a row, and construction payrolls gained for the first time since mid-2007, perhaps partly due to a reversal of jobs blown away by February's blizzards. Even better, the numbers for early 2010 were revised, resulting in muted losses for February and payroll gains for January.

The economy can add +150,000 jobs every month until the end of this year (+1.35 Million) and the unemployment rate will stay at 9.7%.

This month's numbers are less bad but still bad.

+48,000 for Census and +40,000 for temp work means real gain was +74,000.

+74,000 is half of what is necessary to keep up with population growth.

Overall underemployment increased to 16.9%.

The real jobs numbers to look at will be in June, July and August which will reflect the end of and removal of Census hiring.

Since we hardly have day jobs anymore we can stick to what we know most which just happens to be how bad things are. If any corners are being turned it is into the blind no exit alleys of thinking our economy can continue to thrive on bubbles of speculation and nothing else. What we need is to see that we are approaching a profound cataclysmic necessity of learning how to live within the means of our planet because the gold rush days are over for good. Think about it growth is no longer going to be a growth industry much longer on a finite planet, neither is pollution, and neither is expensive technology and war. These labor saving technologies are addons of more expense. And wars are an addon of medical and mental needs to be supported for the rest of the soldiers lives added on to the needs of the Gulf War and the needs of Vietnam and Koreas and ther last remains of WWII too...

So, that's 3.8 MILLION jobs lost since Obama and his $867 Billion "stimulus" fiasco.

Why didn't we just save the money?

While the government sector has grown by over 100,000 full time jobs .... the private sector has lost over 8 million jobs since Dec 07.

More government spending and taxes on the way ... more expenses for companies with Obamacare .... more jobs down the toilet.

Oh, except for those temporary Census jobs.

“Create jobs? First you have to create businesses then it is up to these businesses to create jobs. For a viable economy everyone cannot be working for the US Government or Government contracts either directly or indirectly as we are doing now.”

To create jobs, you first must have a demand. No one starts a business if there is no demand for the product or service. So the question is how to create demand. One way to do that is to increase spending by either lowering taxes or increase government spending. The problem we have now is that taxes have been consistently reduced over the last 25 years to a point where there is really no room for further tax reductions without a huge increase in the national debt, even with drastic government spending cuts, as counter productive as that may be.

Since lowering tax rates is no longer an option, the only tool left to create demand, and as a result – jobs, is government spending.

Odd that many of the same voices that having been crying out against what they think is "socialism" inexplicably feel that the government should guarantee employment. Do you not see the blatant contradiction in that? Or is it because you welcome what benefits you alone--directly and obviously? Are you in fact... socialists yourselves?

We live in a competitive, free-market economy; getting and keeping a job is a personal responsibility. If there are only enough jobs for nine people out of ten, then make yourself a better worker than at least one out of ten people. That's not aiming excessively high, is it?

Hardy and brave people say things like this to themselves in times like these: When the going gets tough, the tough get going. God helps those who help themselves. No work is undignified.

Hi Mike

I am not a liberal. I'm a pragmatist. The job loss numbers peaked in Jan 09. The improvement has been steady since. This month (Mar), there was net job creation. I attribute the steady improvement to Pres. Obama's economic policies. You are correct-- the problem is not solved. But all I am saying is that we are digging ourselves out of the hole by these policies, so let's keep moving in this direction.

Respectfully,
F.M.

PS For your convenience I am copying our "discussion" below. Cheers.

Yes, the economy will turn the corner only to hit a wall called the bond market. We are seeing the first signs of resistance to US Treasuries. As the government is forced to borrow increasingly more and more, the appetite for US debt is falling. This resistance must result is higher interest rates that will tank the US economy. In the face of this dissaster, Obummer continues to spend like there is no tomorrow. Consequently, there probably is no tomorrow for America.

Most would agree incentives are needed to encourage business to hire. In lieu of a demand for their product/service, the below plan offers them a real incentive...offers the jobless a real opportunity. Copy and paste into blogs, emails. Let Congress and Governors know this needs to be done.
Many jobs will never return and this slight gain in jobs includes temporary and part-time employment... but there is a way to provide vast job opportunities in every state and do so within a short time...even in this economy. The key to this initiative is senior attrition and payroll savings to business. This plan is straight foward...targeting a specific group and will generate more job opportunities than any stimulus, past or present.

The key is senior attrition from the labor pool.

Plan: Allow seniors age 62-64 who have not yet applied for Social Security to be Medicare eligible if they retire early. Vast majority of seniors continue working for employer health insurance...until age 65 when Medicare eligible. This Medicare incentive would allow them to retire early creating vast opportunities for the jobless...in every state...in every occupation. This could be a one-time initiative for these targeted seniors...a 30-60 day window of opportunity to respond. It cannot be denied this plan would speed attrition using existing programs and funding...plus additional funds from last years stimulus available. Social Security and Medicare will need to be re-structured and strengthened in the future...Why would we not use these programs now? How could we deny those who are losing or have lost everything an opportunity to restore their lives? Especially when it's inevitable...these seniors will be enrolled in SS and Medicare within a couple of years anyway. The crisis is now... these tools need to be used now for the states to survive...for the jobless to survive.

Healthy seniors would be no cost to Medicare

Bonus for business: This plan offers substantial incentives for employers. Retiring senior employees would be replaced by entry-level...lesser salaried and benefited employees. A new employee earning $3-$5 less/hour less than exiting seniors would result in payroll saving of $5,000-$10,000 per year/per new hire. This plan offers immediate job opportunities for the jobless...offers immediate savings to business.

This plan could provide almost immediate relief to the states...removing vast numbers from unemployment...food stamps...Medicaid. These are just words without the support of those with influence. Please consider the merits of this specific initiative...targeting these specific seniors...for a specific purpose...job creation for citizens in each and every state.

I am just as giddy about this news as Obama. 162,00 new jobs were created last month. It only takes about 100,00 jobs a month to account for population growth. If you subtract the 42,00 temporary census jobs that were created that leaves net job growth at about 20,00 jobs last month. With 6.5 million workers out of work for six months or more it will only take about 325 months to reemploy these people, assuming the last of them is still alive then. What great news!

President Barack Obama is out defending the newly signed healthcare reform law telling CBS News this morning that, without it "this country was going to go bankrupt."

Aaron and Henry react to this bold statement in the accompanying. The U.S. is in a precarious fiscal state but whether this $1.3 trillion program over the next 10-years will help or hasten our demise is still debatable.

As Government Accountability Office David Walker told Tech Ticker earlier this week the only clear result from healthcare reform is "government is bigger, entitlement programs have expanded, spending has increased and taxes are higher."

In response to:

"More people are unemployed today than at any point in our nation's history."

Let me educate you:

Currently:
130 Million People are in the work force
300 Million Americans total
Therefore, 45% are working.

In 1932, the total population was 124 Million.
If you say 45% were in the labor force back then, then 56 Million in the labor force.
Unemployment was 24%.
Therefore, 24% of 56 Million is 13.5 Million.

TODAY, 15 MILLION ARE UNEMPLOYED.

Meaning that,

"More people are unemployed today than at any point in our nation's history."

The economy is likely to expand at a roughly 3 percent pace in the current January-to-March quarter, analysts predict. That's roughly half the 5.6 percent pace seen in the final quarter of last year.

Normally, growth in the 3 percent range would be considered respectable. But the nation is emerging from the worst recession since the 1930s. Growth needs to be in the 5 percent range or higher to quickly drive down the unemployment rate. Both the Federal Reserve and Obama administration expect joblessness will remain above 9 percent through the end of this year.

Obama won the election with a landslide because of Bush and the Republican Party. According to the comments listed here the many of you think that the Republicans aren’t responsible for our economic and jobless issues. Obama was honest with us when he said that to fix our Nation’s problems will take some time to turn this mess around. Obama didn’t cause any of you to lose your jobs and he can’t make your old employers give your jobs back. If the Right Wing, tea bagger, and lazy republicans who just quit working for any of us would stop spreading fear and work with the government maybe we can get somewhere.
American, please open your minds. The Republican had government control for the past 8 years, housing, jobs, war, health care expensive, lost of 401 and retirement plans and what you want to put back a Political Party in place that should have lost all of your trust and respect on a promise that we “ May” work for you or that they “care” about the American people. Where were they when they had control of the Government and What did you personally get out of it. I lost money in my 401K and watch so many people lose their jobs. obama said the only way to keep the unemployment rating from peaking at 9% was to spend a trillion dollars pumping taxpayer money into the economy like crazy over his first 18 months in office.

the unemployment rate is well ABOVE that now (we would need a million jobs just to get it down under 9%), and it has been that way for close to a year. and it probably will be come the time people start making up their minds about november.

so by obama's own recknoninh, we have less jobs (one million less to be exact) than if we had spent $0 on stimulus. on top of that we are out a trillion dollars.

then you have to add in the trillion dollars spent on the health care bill and its massive unpopularity and the truth it exposed about obama's tendency to completely ignore opposing views, force things on a public even though they adamantly do not want them and violate a historic pledge to be promote transparnecy by putting the negotiations on C-SPAN.

in the end you are 2 trillion dollars, one million jobs, and a big credibility and gap short of where you were when you started out.

Go read books and stop thinking that spending money is what moves the economy, start understanding that its creating value with a small tax burden between market participants that moves the economy.

I'm sure this as already been posted here BUT we're smart enough to now that 100,000 of those jobs were TEMPORARY Census jobs, i.e, government jobs. The private sector is not putting up new jobs.

As I have been writing for the last many years, US economy will go down and down compared to Europeans, Chinese, etc., as evident by Euro being so MUCH MORE VALUABLE than US Dollar, as evident by so many banks collapsing in US resulting in the massive Government bail outs of the Banks and Autos, etc. etc. UNLESS we address the fundamental problems of the US economy, which problems at their core is due to what Utter Lunatics Republicans in US are and how right-wing (Lying) most of the US Media is that it has allowed them to get away with their Lunacy.

These fundamental problems with US economy are:

1- Our money (Taxes) wasted on unnecessary Wars.

2- Our money (Taxes) wasted on a Gargantuan Military.

3- Our money (Taxes) not invested in our people and cities as Europeans do with Universal Single Payer Health Care, Universal Education and many other social services.

Huh? Let's see. 1/3 of count for census workers, 1/3 part time or temporary, and 1/3 in the public sector to help manage his socialist agenda. Today, Barry took airforce 1 to Charlotte, N.C., gave a 10 minute sermon, on all the wonderful things he is responsible for, took 5 questions, and beat it back to Washington to be on hand for the Easter egg hunt. Yesterday, the annointed one was in Portland Maine, doing his stand-up comedy routine. Is there a mathematician out there? The cost for Charlotte security apprximately $100,000, jet fuel from D.C. to Charlotte, $180,000, meals for his cabal including the indispensible Valerie Jarrett, and press, $250,000, limo service to and from the airport $200,000, for an estimated total of $730,000. Factior in his joy ride to Maine, and the tab is roughly $1.5 million. Barry, do everybody a favor. Stay home and save the taxpayers some money. The only one you inspire is your self-loving self.

no, not enough... then extend unemployment indefinitely, then raise minimum wage (moot issue with our inflation)... then another trillion on healthcare, that mandates even more healthcare spending at the state level for medicaid... its a grand debacle.

It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president."

"The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince.

Based on some of the comments I read on hear, its obvious that many of you are simply idiots and facts simply don't matter. Here are a few facts you may want to be aware of for your future railing against President Obama.

President was sworn in on Jan. 20, 2009. The stimulus bill was passed by Congress on Feb. 13, 2009 and signed by President Obama on Feb. 17, 2009. Of course, it takes weeks and probably months to realize any positive effects from the stimulus. Having said this now take a look the job loses in 2009-2010 and notice the positive trend to finally coming out of the Great Recession with jobs actually being added to the economy for the first time since November 2007, when 94,000 jobs were added. I certainly don't know when President Obama's policies began to have an affect, positive or negative, on employment, however, I do know, the economy is heading now in the right direction.

Monthly job losses reported by the Bureau of Labor Statics are as follows:

Dec. 2008: 670,000
Jan. 2009: 780,000
Feb. 2009: 651,000
Mar. 2009: 663,000
Apr. 2009: 539,000
May 2009: 345,000
June 2009: 467,000
July 2009: 360,000
Aug. 2009: 298,000
Sep. 2009: 139,000
Oct. 2009: 190,000
Nov. 2009: 11,000
Dec. 2009: 85,000
Jan. 2010: 22,000
Feb. 2010: 20,000
Mar. 2010: 162,000 jobs added.

Unemployment is still too high, however, the economy is at least now beginning to add jobs rather than losing jobs. Obama haters I know you want him to fail so badly and it is killing you that the economy will certainly improve on his watch and get him re-elected in 2012.

Most folks I know is discouraged about the economy. This year has been a harder year for all of us. More of my college educated and middle aged friends are being laid off from sales, management, and teaching jobs.

Sadly these are not the folks best suited for making batteries or paving roads as with Obamas 1930s recovery plan. This is a new century that needed a new jobs plan, not a remake of a century old jobs plan.

I work full time and have applied for part time work hoping to just get my family through 2010 intact. So I do not share or feel the POTUS' optimism.

Of course, he is a heck of a lot better off this year than last year, and he is sitting pretty and pampered - so his optimism for himself is completely understandable.

Republicans have no idea how destructive their deregulation policies were to the economy. We are lucky anyone is working.

The Democrats are not far behind the Republicans though.

What we need is a government that works for the people. Not the toilet people we have now.

I said:

"More people are unemployed today than at any point in our nation's history."

That is a fact. If you want to obfuscate by talking a percentage when I clearly stated a quantity, that's your choice.

15 Million unemployed. More people are unemployed today than at any point in our nation's history

I thought Republicans & Tea Party Members Depended on the [Private Sector]

Not the Big Bad Mean Ole Federal Government For [Jobs]

No Sir, That would [Not] be a Republican Principle.

It was the Private Sector, Wall Street, Mega Banks, AIG and the Mortgage Crisis, that Bankrupted the Nation, So Go Depend On them.

My Mistake, they Dumped American Employees-Workers for Foreign Countries [Cheap Labor] and to Keep Profits.

The [Private Sector-Corporate America] gave their Jobs to, Communist-Socialist China & Viet Nam. They also gave their Jobs to Canada, Mexico, India, Bangladesh, Brazil and other Nations.

Republicans Demand that Corporate America, Provide Your A!!es A Damn Living..

Not the Big Bad Mean Ole Government.

You Scorn [Socialism] but You Want Big Government to Create Jobs For You !!

What a Damn [Double Standard] Indeed, But A-Typical of Republican, GOP Senate-Congress, Fox News, AM-Hate Radio, Tea Partiers, Birthers & 912ers.

Political Wire: A New Bloomberg Poll finds that more than 90% of Tea Party backers say the United States "is verging more toward socialism than capitalism, the federal government is trying to control too many aspects of private life and more decisions should be made at the state level."

Big Note: At the same time, 70% of those who sympathize with the Tea Party "want a federal government that fosters job creation."

Said pollster Ann Selzer: "The ideas that find nearly universal agreement among Tea Party supporters are rather vague. You would think any idea that involves more government action would be anathema, and that is just not the case."

This is just like the "good news" on the economy during the Bush administration - it makes sense to government number crunchers, but it's news indeed to the average person.

Encouraging!? Oh My! - With the average entry-level Federal Jobs varying so much. And the Federal Government so deceiving, and giving the 'run-around' on $amounts. Why? But, entry-level is approx $36,000 at the Low end to start.- And that does NOT include great Benefits. da! - So, that means- the average entry level civilian JOB - without benefits should also be around a minimum of $32,000 plus average benefits. That would be considered by the FEDs as mediocre to pitiful. But, for a civilian HEAD-of-HOUSEHOLD entry-level position,- the Minimum Wage, without benefits (pay-your-own),- should be ar least, to start, set at-- $$40,000 ( enough to barely pay your' own benefits). -- Or Federal Minimum Wage "for a HEAD-of-HOUSEHOLD" should be at Minimum-- $$40,000 divided by 52-weeks= $760/wk,- or $19/Hr. - - $19 per Hour as Minimum Wage, for "HEAD-of-Household" is Not that much. And that person still has to pay Benefits!? Almost Impossible. - So with an average 4 person household, that would be 'chump change',-- and still be in POVERTY!? -- Understandably, $19 per hour is a bit much, if Not a Head of Household,- but Heads-of-Households, on average of 4per-home,- is way tooo little. -- So what is CONGRESS doing? Any U.S. Citizen is just as good as any average entry-level government enmpolyee!!?? -- Why the Discriminatory Discrepancy? -- CONGRESS needs pay scales that reflect more inline with the 'Minimum-Wage' averages!!

Obama is still doing better than Jimmy Carter. Jimmy told us to "get used to it".

I told you about it. I warned you about it. Now watch it unfold. Obama is the Anti-Christ. I will warn you once again. The Mark of the Beast on your Forehead is when you Accept the Anti-Christ through Blind Faith. The Mark of the Beast on your Hand is when you Accept the Anti-Christ through Gifts. People Obama is the Anti-Christ.

The president's idea of a sustainable recovery:

- Consumer spending up.

- Wages down.

- Unemployment stuck at 9.7%

To borrow one of his own lines, If Democrats want to run on that in the fall, go for it.

The numbers are bogus. The left wing propaganda machine the Washington Post cannot be trusted.

Posted by: sonofliberty09 | April 2, 2010 9:32 PM | Report abuse

The new hires one million plus are temporary Census workers. Unemployment still at 9.7%. All of the stimulus money spent on shovel ready jobs and real businesses still laying off, at least not in large numbers.
Only Obama, Washington Post and the Left could see anything that looks like an improvement. Wait until the Census workers are laid off should be interesting.
By the way has any one else received two census forms in the mail to fill out? Myself and many of my neighbors have, one several weeks ago and another just this week. What is the deal?

I have an idea...Take the people on umemployment and give them jobs cleaning up America. We have a lot of cleaning up at home to do, we busy cleaning up everybody else's messes. How about our own? Our cities, our parks, our streets, in and around all the foreclosures. Use their skills for rehabbing properties, cleaning up and rehabbing and/or rebuilding inner cities, etc. I see years of employment just paying attention to the upkeep of infrastructure and our waterways.

Automation and more lost jobs. Since it is rolling up and automatic, the boss can leave for weeks or months at a time and momentum will keep working. That means longer and better vacations. That's good for the tourism and lease sure business. Lease a big boat and go fishing for a month. Unemployment might go up another 5 per cent. Start a charter service or charter a jet. Avoid unchartered territory.
