Kirk for Senate?

PH2009092302690.jpg

Looks like Kennedy family confidant Paul Kirk will be named interim senator from Massachusetts. There was a quick round of dream candidates last week -- Atul Gawande being a prominent name -- but this is probably for the best. Gawande would be an excellent senator. But what you want in the interim position is someone who can work with Kennedy's staff and won't bring any huge surprises to the table. At this juncture, uncertainty is probably not an ally of reform.

what happened to the idea (read it on cnn.com) that since democrats didn't have a two thirds majority in the house that there was a 3 month delay (which could be bypassed if Patrick considered it an emergency). Was it an emergency??? There was also word that the republicans in Mass. could choose to fight it if they wanted? Have they said they won't???

I'd consider it an emergency, according to the Massachusetts Constitution: the governor may declare an emergency when, in his opinion, doing so is necessary for the "immediate preservation of the public peace, health, safety or convenience."

Did Atul Gawande say, "Damn it Kirk, I a doctor not a senator!"
