Back to your regularly scheduled blogging
Sorry for the slow blogging this morning. I, uh, locked myself out of my house. For three hours. Grr. Normal programming begins now, and I've got a live chat in 15 minutes, so throw your questions this-a-way.

For $25, you can pick up a very handy device called a key safe at Home Depot. It is a "burglar proof" key storage safe about the size of a Matchbook car that you can attach to the house outside. It has a little door secured by a keypad combination lock, and will hold an extra key to your house. Virtually indestructible. And, at last count, it has saved us at leat 20 visits from locksmiths or glaziers.

Habits!
Early on, I developed an unvarying habit that has caused me great comfort (in response to some careful thought ahead of time about what I'd have to do if locked out).
Result (first):
I've never been locked out of my house.
Process:
- choose a pocket in pants (for me, right pocket) that is the home for keys.
- nothing else goes in the key pocket, and i have a ring of keys with a 'fob' that makes the keys presence known if touched.
- never set keys anywhere except in the pocket. Never, ever.
- when changing pants, move the keys first, before putting them on.
- anytime (repeat 3 times) you leave the house pat the pants pocket to check that the keys are there.
- never leave the house without the key-holding pants.
- do the above consistently (unvaryingly) through daily living.
- no exceptions allowed.
- the happy result flows from the actions above.

Didn't you think of trying to break the lock, or the door, like "Skip" Gates did? The police response would have been interesting.
