Department of Corrections: Des Moines skyscrapers are unexpectedly tall
Nick Johnson writes in:
Great piece on health prices, but your analogy -- US health care prices : other countries' health care prices :: NY skyscrapers : Des Moines skyscrapers -- does a disservice to Des Moines.
According to Wikipedia the Empire State Building is less than 3 times the height of Des Moines' Principal Building.

Empire State = 1250ft (roof)
Principal Building = 630ft

Say what you want. You can't take the Des Moines out of Des Moines and you can't take the Iowa out of DesMoines. They can have the tallest building in the world, and it would still be 'who cares?'
Now Iowa City, that's a city to luv.
Full Desclosure: The best pork chop I ever ate in a restaurant was in Iowa. It is advisable however to avoid downwind placement from pig processing plants. How do they stand it?

One good correction is to see that the issue of towering U.S. pay rates for doctors (per procedure) is simply the *same issue* as "wasted/ineffective procedures", from another angle.
If you do an effective treatment of a condition with a 80% success rate, you can earn more per hour doing it than a competitor (in any country) that addresses the same condition with a 40% success rate (per procedure).
