Meh. I know it's theoretically proper to call national aristocratic figureheads 'head of state', but it seems like an elaborate fiction to justify certain quirks in Europe's historical political evolution, not something we should be particularly bothered with.

Well, it's not just a matter of choice of words. The Instrument of Government, which is part of the Swedish Constitution (and not an ancient document - it dates from 1974), says the king is the head of state.
