Our biggest problem with dependence on foreign oil comes from our need for gasoline for transportation. Shifting the energy supply demand from gasoline to the power grid solves a whole lot of problems, and puts us in control of our own destiny vis a vis upgrading our grid to include natural gas, nuclear, wind, solar, and geothermal domestic sources. The Volt is a very exciting breakthrough.
