Truck Driver Charged in Crash

Virginia State Police have charged an Alabama truck driver with reckless driving in connection with a fatal accident that occurred on Interstate 95 near Lorton on Thursday evening.

Police said Danny W. Nelson was unable to brake in time and struck a 1988 Chrysler, whose driver Calvin H. Ruble II, 59, died at the scene.

After striking the Chrysler, the tractor-trailer skidded left and hit a Ford Explorer, which in turn hit three other vehicles. The truck then hit another vehicle, which then collided with three more vehicles. In all, 10 vehicles were involved, snarling traffic for more than five hours.

Two other people in the collision were hurt, but their injuries were not serious.

Were any readers of Focus on Fairfax among those stuck in traffic for five hours last night because of the rush hour accident? How did you pass the time? Anyone find a way to navigate out of the mess?
