Plan to Lower Speed Limit on Route 1 Stalls

From today's Metro Section:

State transportation officials have halted plans to reduce the speed limit on a portion of Route 1 in Northern Virginia pending further discussion with local leaders.
A study released in September by the Virginia Department of Transportation recommended dropping the speed limit from 45 mph to 35 mph along a 4 1/2 -mile stretch of Route 1 in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County.
The report said the crash and death rates along that portion of the highway were more than double the statewide average.
VDOT decided to reduce the speed limit in mid-March after speaking with state and local police. But Fairfax County supervisors who represent the area complained, saying they weren't consulted about the change.
