Animals, Take Cover!

I cannot recall the last time I saw so much fur on a runway. The models in Jean Paul Gaultier's show Tuesday night were decked out in all sorts of animal pelts, faux pelts and pelts with the head and tail still attached. I couldn't decide if leaving the head on a stole is a form of brutal honesty or just plain creepy. In all truth, I generally like fur as long as it doesn't come from endangered species. But this was fur overload. Fur hats, fur coats, fur wraps, fur leggings. Are there any animals left in the forest?

The show was so chock full of fur that security men had to crouch in the aisles to watch for protesters who might want to fling themselves onto the runway to howl in anger. I was just ready to howl over the monotony.

Robin, I'm shocked and disgusted to read that you "generally" like fur. Are you aware of the repulsive, degrading methods that are used to trap, maim, and kill these creatures? It's horrible. The only crime these poor animals commit is having soft, warm, fur that, for them, serves a critical function. And you don't think twice about celebrating, glorifying the fact that we strip them of all dignity and and murder them in the name of "fashion"? Their fur belongs to THEM, not to sick people who design it and wear it. SHAME on you, Robin.

Angela, I am sorry to have to inform you, but some of us don't care. Animals are killed for lots of reasons: sport, food, clothing, etc. I eat meat and wear leather and can't wait until the day I buy my first full length mink. I respect your decision not to wear fur, you should respect those that do choose to wear it.

I must agree with Angela. There is no good reason to wear or promote fur, other than a deep well of ignorance and that ignorance needs to be remedied. These animals are either raised in the worst conditions imaginable (intentionally left in freezing conditions to be more valuable, and fed the rotting remnants of previous cage-mates), or trapped. Trapping is a danger to any animal, fur-bearing, endangered or pet, killing by impaling on steel pins, strangulation or exposure.

The worst of all is that fur is for vanity only, not for nourishment or a byproduct of providing food. One can be against fur and eat meat, and not be a hypocrite, "not peta".

As to you and others like you, anyone who knows these things and still looks forward to a mink coat for her own self-gratification is not anyone who will deserve my respect, nor should I feel at all compelled to provide it.

That's just sad. I thought we'd gotten past fur. How cruel.

Fur is terrible and I agree that no one should wear it!
