Dressing for Tech Success

On my way to work this morning, I had a brief moment of confusion after I pressed the "play" button on my iPod Nano and raised it up to my shirt without realizing that said garment didn't have a pocket into which I could drop the thing.

That experience reminded me of how my tastes in technology have changed my tastes in fashion. A shirt pocket is a must (for holding an iPod as well as such more mundane items such as business cards and glasses), but the right size of pants pocket also matters. They can't be too deep, lest I have a phone-sized bump halfway down my leg; they also can't be too shallow or compact, which means, no more Levi's 501s for me, although 550s do work well. A lot of flat-front pants can be especially problematic in this respect.

At the same time, I'm not willing to holster anything to my belt or wear clothing built specifically for transporting multiple electronic items. I'm also probably too old to wear cargo pants.... though if I were still carrying a separate phone and handheld organizer, I might have to relent on these points.

So I have to remember to go through the same tests every time I'm trying on something new in a store, comparing the capacity of different pockets against the gadgets I might carry in them--Treo, iPod, digital camera, the wireless "smart key" for the car and so on. I'm less willing to buy clothes online simply because I can't perform this inspection beforehand.

Women can at least stuff everything in a purse, although my wife's purse-procurement requirements are fairly extensive in their own right--thanks in part to all the electronic gear she also carries around.
