Skype 5.0 for Windows integrates Facebook, adds group video calls

There's a new version of Skype out with a couple of interesting features--one of which actually seems worth your time. Skype 5.0 for Windows, released Thursday and documented in a blog post, addresses one user request by adding group video calling. This feature, debuted in test form back in May,...

FCC fixes CableCard rules; CableCard market likely to stay broken

You won't have to sit around your house waiting for the cable guy to pop a CableCard into your TiVo, under regulations approved by the Federal Communications Commission today. The FCC's rules will also require that cable companies clearly document their CableCard options and provide the same channel lineup to...

New smartphone launches force buyers to bet

When Microsoft introduced its Windows Phone 7 operating system on Monday, it couldn't make its traditional sales pitch to consumers: We're Microsoft, this product has "Windows" in its name, get on board now! Instead, it had to ask something different: Trust us to build this platform.

Verizon to start selling the iPad. But who isn't?

The headline on a new page at Verizon Wireless's site might suggest a major thaw in the Apple-Verizon relationship: iPad. Coming October 28. But please read past the lead of Verizon's marketing -- which one reader said included a recorded mention of the news that played when he called the...

Bing brings Facebook-fueled search results

Can your search get by with a little help from your friends? Bing thinks so. The Microsoft search site now lets users upgrade their queries by drawing on information friends have shared on Facebook. One new Bing search option, Liked Results, should spotlight relevant items shared by friends on Facebook....

Request for comments: Java considered harmful?

For years, my standard computer-maintenance advice has included this item: Make sure your PC's copy of Java is up to date. But maybe it's time for a revision: Make sure you don't have Java on your PC. To refresh any faded memories: On a home computer, Java is the software...

Patch Tuesday brings record harvest of security fixes

Run Windows? Notice a little icon toward the bottom right of the screen that wasn't there last night? Please don't ignore it. That icon is your cue to take part in the monthly Microsoft ritual called Patch Tuesday. For this month, Microsoft shipped a set of 16 patches that close...

Facebook adds one-time passwords, remote logout

Using Facebook from a public computer that you think might be hacked? Log on from your phone, or give the site a rest. But if you can't or would rather not, the social network now provides two extra safeguards.

A check-in at Foursquare HQ (and with founder Dennis Crowley)

NEW YORK -- One of my last stops on my Oct. 11 day trip to Manhattan had nothing to do with Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 launch. Instead, I headed across town to Foursquare's offices. Or, I should say, "office" -- this start-up, which lets you share your location with selected...

Close up with Windows Phone 7

NEW YORK--I can say one thing with certainty about Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 smartphone software, introduced here this morning: It's no Windows Mobile 6.5. Windows Phone 7 looks nothing like that woeful release or any of its earlier attempts at updating Windows Mobile since the turn of the century....

Microsoft launches Windows Phone 7

NEW YORK--Microsoft says it's answered the call of the iPhone and Android with Windows Phone 7 the written-from-scratch smartphone platform it introduced at a press event here this morning. Well, the Redmond, Wash., company's executives didn't say those exact words. But the context of today's announcements--eight months after Microsoft staged the equivalent of a Chapter 7 liquidation of its aging Windows Mobile platform, and only three months after it junked a separate smartphone attempt called Kin--didn't require much interpretation.

PostPoints tip: Fine-tune Facebook notifications

Facebook users: How often has the site e-mailed you over the last week? And how many of those e-mails contained more than an invitation to click through to the site to see what just happened there? Take a minute to see what Facebook developments will earn you a new message...
