Is 2011 the year of the tablet, 3DTV?
When analysts looked at the Consumer Electronics Show line-up last year, they predicted that 2010 would be the year of the tablet and 3DTV. Looking at this year's lineup, that seems to be the case again, and a recent survey suggests there may be more interest in purchasing the high-end gadgets this year than there was last year.
A new report from the market research firm Accenture predicts that tablets, e-book readers, smartphones and 3DTVs will all see a boost in buying rates.
The firm conducted a survey of 8,000 consumers in eight countries: Brazil, China, France, Germany, India Japan, Russia and the U.S. Participants were asked how likely they were to purchase 19 different technologies in the next year.
The study predicts tablets will see a 160 percent rise in purchases. That's great news for companies exhibiting at CES this year, where tablets are king. Samsung, Vizio, Toshiba and Motorola all have tablets on tap for the show, as do RIM, LG, Asus and MSI.
Accenture also predicts that purchases of another much-hyped CES offering, the 3DTV, will grow 300 percent in the next year, with the highest demand coming from China. The demand for these gadgets comes with caveats, however. Factors such as a greater variety of 3D content and being able to ditch the glasses were important to those on the fence about purchasing the new sets. Fifty-seven percent of respondents in all countries said they would be more inclined to buy a 3DTV if the prices were lower.
With Vizio announcing that its new line of 3DTVs will be under $300, that low price point could be within the industry's sights.
What's on its way out? According to the survey, purchases of desktop or laptop computers are expected to decline 39 percent from last year, while non-smartphone mobile purchases will fall 56 percent. Use of both of those types of tech have fallen in the past year, according to the study, as people use tablets and smartphones to check their e-mail and surf the Web.
