Google: Gmail data has been restored

By Hayley Tsukayama

Google has issued a statement saying that it has successfully restored all data from its tapes and is processing the information. Google spokeswoman Jessica Kositz said access should be restored to most users in a matter of hours and that the best thing for those still waiting for access is to keep checking Google's status dashboards.

Kositz said that users with larger amounts of data in their mailboxes could have to wait longer and that the company will issue a full incident report within about 48 hours.

Thousands of Gmail users to lost access to their e-mail on Monday after a storage software update went awry. Google had to go to its physical backup tapes to fully restore users' data.

For more information about what happened, check out Google's Gmail blog.

They restored all data from TAPES? I truly doubt Google has/uses even a single tape drive.

That's why you should not trust the 'Cloud' 100% for your personal email or company email. it's totally out of your hand.

This is great for us, myself as retired geologist, we have lost near two years, since the time I was stolen, working al the "PPLD East Library PC # 36 by one unknown smart IT Hacker", missrepresenting the Publick Library, removed over 32,000 EM Mail with data applicaple to the book I am drafting, at that time I was 80% completed, hower without the completed data, was not possible to continue.
All the earth science community understand these issues, same should be understood, along the "hacker community that work or are retired from the spook agencies" - These very well know many proceedures, better not be used for these damaging tasks. We thanks the Brotherhood at GOOGLE for such fine efforts. Thge Earth will Blessed all of you. Will be wise, to notify the IT Dept of the Public Libraries to avoid such missrepresentations in their PC's.

Germantowner,

Believe it! Google posted it on the official Gmail Blog. Apparently, magnetic tapes are still cheaper (and in some ways, safer) than hard drives when you need to back up massive amounts of data.

I went to gmail this afternoon and Chrome said it couldn't verify that the server was alright. Blood red screen. I clicked on through.

Way past when you say Google restored their Gmail inbox problem, I lost inbox on Tuesday, Mar 1 at 9 PM. Subsequently, I received 2 new emails before I went to sleep after midnight. When I awoke on Wednesday, March 2, those 2 emails were gone. I had an empty inbox. Google has not resolved this problem and it's a growing population, not static 40,000 Gmail users as announced on Monday. Google lying
