FBI establishes toll free Haiti fraud line
Americans concerned with suspected Haitian earthquake fraud can now call a toll-free number or e-mail their concerns to federal officials.
Concerned individuals with allegations of fraud may call (866) 720-5721, fax (225) 334-4707 or e-mail disaster@leo.gov. The phone number and e-mail are overseen by the Federal Bureau of Investigations and National Center for Disaster Fraud.
The center was established by the Justice Department in the wake of Hurricane Katrina to investigate and deter fraud related to Gulf Coast disaster relief and recovery. More than 20 federal agencies participate in the center and it will act once again as a clearinghouse for allegations of disaster relief fraud.
The agency continues to remind Americans to keep a critical Eye on groups seeking donations for Haitian victims, especially solicitations sent via e-mail, Web sites or social media.
