The U.S. Postal Service plans to expand its greeting card sales to 900 locations nationwide just in time for Valentine's Day, with plans to expand to 1,500 locations by March. Twenty post offices in the Washington area are selling cards. (See a full list below.)

The Eye was the first to report about the Postal Service's efforts to boost sagging revenues by selling one of the most popularly mailed items. More than half of the 7 billion greeting cards sold in the U.S. each year are sent through the mail, accounting for 2 percent of total mail volume.

Valentine's Day is the second-most popular time to send cards in the mail, behind the winter holiday season, according to the Greeting Card Association.
