At least 431 attacks on Census workers

By Ed O'Keefe

Guns, knives, lawn chairs, animals -- just some of the items used to shoo away or threaten U.S. Census Bureau workers this year.

Workers were involved in at least 431 reported incidents of violence as of Friday, according to the Census Bureau. Those incidents included 140 threats with weapons and 91 physical attacks, officials said.

The number of incidents reported by census takers is more than double from the 2000 Census. But colleague Carol Morello reported last week that officials do not consider anti-government sentiment more widespread than usual this year.

But that didn't stop Rep. James Moran (D-Va.) from suggesting as much late last week on the floor of the House.

Census workers "are performing a very important public service," Moran said (see the video clip above). "I'm afraid that some of this abuse may be tied to some of the anti-government rhetoric from some people in this body and the Republican noise machine, in other words, Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck and other so-called shock jocks."

What do you think? Is it anti-government sentiment or just people unwilling to share their personal information with anyone? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.

If you are in the phone book, or on Facebook, or you name address and age are otherwise available online (and it almost certainly is), if you already gave that information to the state to get a driver's license, or a marriage license, etc. then it is ridiculous to assert that the information requested by the census is now suddenly somehow "personal" and "private".

Furthermore, filling out your census form is a civic duty, just like voting and serving on juries. If you are making a census worker hunt you down to fill out your form -- or worse, harassing them when they do find you -- then you are just costing other taxpayers a lot of money. It's no different than being a tax cheat.

If you can't cooperate with this one small civic duty that the Constitution requires in exchange for the benefits of citizenship in this country, then you don't deserve to live here.

I would never want any of my family members to do Census work, because to go door to door soliciting information is to play roulette with one's safety, in my opinion. One need not be rational or sane in order to live on one's own these days, I'm afraid.

That having been said, the Census Bureau could do a better job of informing residents as to what is to be expected. Because we live in a relatively new neighborhood, we didn't get a Census form by mail. Having heard that each home visit necessitated by an unreturned form would cost the government/taxpayers an additional $60, we picked up a form from a local business, completed it, and mailed it in. A couple of weeks later, a Census rep called to verify our address and leading me to belief that the process was, at that point, complete. Then a Census worker arrived at our home with her clipboard, forms, and ID badge. I explained that we had already mailed back our form, but she insisted on getting the information again, saying that she had been instructed to do so and would only have to repeat the visit should we choose not to cooperate. She insisted, as well, on writing the information down herself, rather than allowing me to do it. I found the experience mildly annoying, and I really have nothing to hide.

I'm have been working for the Census here in Maine, and I have met with little hostility, no attacks, and general courtesy. I'm sorry, CMNC, but no business or Post Office had Census forms to give you. The Census Bureau sent us out to find people who hadn't sent in forms. In Maine, a lot of them hadn't received forms because the forms were not forwardable, and the residents were in Florida when the forms were mailed. Usually, the citizens had sent in the form they received in Florida (too bad for Maine's Federal money), but we workers had to be able to document that the address in Maine was vacant on the target date, April 1.

I agree 100%. Especially with words like Reload, and this is war etc etc. Add to all the hate they preach on their shows it's no wonder. When have you ever heard such things. The voters have spoken, a President was chosen and we all should respect that. That's what happened in the past. I didn't agree with Bush, didn't vote for him but was livid when they threw shoes at him because no matter what he was our President and should have been treated with respect.

They have no respect for President Obama and will be the first one's to cry - it wasn't me, I didn't tell them to do that when one of those dumb rednecks take their calls for uprising literally and try to hurt Him or are government workers.

It's crazy, they are crazy.

I see the drunken Irishman-Moran, who gets in fist fights with his own constituents is blaming the radio for attacks on census workers.....looks like years of drinking have finally wasted away whatever brains Moran had left....which wasn't very much.

Posted by: Realist201 | June 28, 2010 5:38 PM | Report abuse

It's the economy, stupid.

If there is really a serious uptick in violence--and these comments from Moran are likely more just partisan games than anything else--then we need to look back at the last time that census workers were ducking bullets...the Depression. Notice a connection?

If right-wing radio were the cause, then why wasn't there more violence in 2000? Limbaugh was at his heyday in the 1990s, after all.

Really, though, shouldn't we be worrying about the massive census fraud that was just uncovered in New York? Two census managers decided to fill out thousands of census forms without ever actually counting or contacting the people. They just made up information, and ordered their subordinates to do the same. Their biggest mistake was probably firing those who refused since at least one of those people turned around and blew the whistle on the scam.

Or is Moran just trying to distract from the fraud by complaining about violence?

As a permanent employee at the Census Bureau, I can assure you that we are still a part of the Department of Commerce. Also, the data you are providing the Census Bureau is protected and is nothing more than you give to credit card companies or to your local governments. If you choose to not mail in your Census form, you will contribute to your state having fewer congressional representatives, so I strongly encourage you to get counted.

The American Community Survey

It asks much mmore personal questions and is very invasive and folks are being threaten with $5,000 fines by some workers.
It is creating a lot of distrust and confusion.
It needs to be on the front page of the press ASAP!

Look at the hateful comments from right-wing readers under this article. People like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck speak their language. Every day they tell their listeners about made-up conspiracies to get them to distrust government, whether the issue is health care or fixing the pothole down the street. And their gullible listeners eat it up because they like to be told what to think. Of course right-wing television and radio figures are partly responsible for attacks on census workers. The criminals feel justified because the Becks and Limbaughs of the media tell them the census is taken for dubious purposes.

I don't know under which situation these workers were "attacked". We only know the scanty information provided by the MSM. Did those workers threatened the citizens?

I wouldn't doubt it.

Blaming the shock jocks is very easy. All of the wrong that those workers may have committed would be thrown under the carpet and only the political spin would left as explanation of the "incidents".

The rhetoric against bush was not anti-government rhetoric. it was the opposite. People critical of bush pointed out how he was ABUSING the power of our government, UNDERMINING our Constitution, not that the government or our system was evil, or that we needed to overthorw the government. Hatred of bush and his policies was perfectly rational, given the results and what we know of what he did, but Democrats were not screaming that we should attack government employees, not pay our taxes, attack judges, arm to the teeth, and all the rest of the crazy crap we continually hear from the tea bagging insane right these days.

the comments by 2010Rout are so stupid... where to begin:

1. Most of the racist southern Democrats have left the party. Where did they go? Oh, the GOP.
2. Che Guevara killed some people, but the right-wing dictators in Argentina and Chile killed tens of thousands (with U.S. support). Look up "Operation Condor."
3. U.S.-supported dictators and death squads in Latin America have killed far more people than Chavez supposedly has.
4. Hitler was an anti-communist. You can look this up and have a better understanding of how he was not a "socialist" as we understand it.

Ultimately, just because Democrats were the party of racists 50 years ago doesn't mean that GOP racists today get a free pass.

This is what happens when you don't pay attention to history class in high school. The gentleman here cherry-picks certain bits and pieces of information while conveniently ignoring others, and then thinks that this proves his point. Yes, Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas were Republicans. Teddy Roosevelt was an environmentalist too - SO WHAT? The fact that is being missed here is that the opposition to the Civil Rights Act (introduced by Democrats, btw) was almost entirely regional. I think the shift in demographics is best demonstrated by the switch by Strom Thurmond from the Democratic to the Republican Party, which is pretty much what happened to much of the South. The South, when fighting the Civil Rights act, was NOT being "leftist" - they were being Conservative. When the conservatism of the period failed them, they switched parties, resulting in the growing conservative trend in the Republican Party that began in the late '60s and continues to the present.

(Hitler was not a socialist, but a fascist. There is a difference.)

So let's turn the concept around. Our poster here notes that MLK was a member of the Republican Party, as most African Americans were in the '50s and '60s. I wonder how well the MLK of 1964 would fit in with the Republican Party of 2010. Do you think MLK would have supported Georgia's Voter ID program? Do you think that MLK would have supported Arizona's efforts concerning immigration? Do you think that the modern Republican Party would have appreciated MLK's stubborn insistence for individual human rights, or his support of unions, such as the Memphis Sanitation Workers union that he was supporting when he was assassinated?

I doubt it.

a) You have an incredibly biased headline, and

b) Maybe your newspaper could try practicing journalism and look into the cases to get an idea of why the workers were attacked instead of asking people to display their biases by guessing why.

Limbaugh and Beck employ violent language to instill fear of the government among listeners, some of whom are not playing with a full deck. Speech is a form of action, and everyone is responsible for his actions; Limbaugh and Beck are responsible for lighting the fuse for some of these unguided missiles.

As for Beck's scholarship, he was shocked to find a fasces on the Liberty head dime and felt it proved something terrible about a longstanding conspiracy. I guess he never noticed the fasces on the wall behind the podium in the Senate. (The fasces is a centuries-old symbol of state power.)

It is a network of drug and immigrant smuggling gangs run by the Mexican cartels with tacit approval of the Mexican government. These people simply do not like government officials poking around. You will not read any of this in the liberal media, naturally, because it is embarrassing to the Obama administration and its hispanic activist groups who are petitioning for a mass amnesty and cheap American citizenship.

If Obama has his way, 20,000,000 of these border jumping bandidos will be able to go about their nefarious ways unhampered by any pesky, immigration laws or any other laws they don't like.

Rep. Moran is quite frankly, an idiot. He has been that for quite awhile. Apparently he is right at home along with the other 534 'house' idiots.

I wonder if he blames Rush and Beck for the "G20" rioting in Toronto?

Jim Moran is nut does anyone listen to him? I cannot fathom why we can't get him out of office in NoVA; get us another Democrat to replace this nutter.

I find his hypocrisy hilarious. He is doing exactly the same tactics as this he is talking about. What a tool.

If the Congress would put as much energy into enforcing existing laws and NOT stroking their egos... and being fiscally responsible ...
Sorry, I was day dreaming for a minute.

Maybe people didn't like it when several different barely English speaking "census workers" per week showed up asking the race of the people in the house....especially when houses in their neighborhood started getting robbed during the census.

The 9th and 10th Amendments to the U. S. Constitution prohibit Congress from doing anything not authorized by Article 1, Section 8, of the U.S. Constitution.

"All laws which are repugnant to the Constitution are null and void." Marbury vs. Madison

"No one is bound to obey an Unconstitutinal law and no courts are bound to enforce it." 16 Am Jur 2d, Sec 177 late 2d. Sec 256

The USA is a colorless document, in a colorless Nation, so the racist Dems sending out the "Feds tools" asking the racial profiling question is just lawlessness running amok.
People who are filing law suits on Census workers asking racial questions of people stand to lose everything they own for doing it.
This Fed trying to point any finger at Arizona and the States wanting to stop illegals from flocking in, has unclean hands to make any point. The census finds 3 fingers pointing back at this Fed for racism practices.

What difference does it make what I think. Why don't you do some reporting and tell us? I thought that's what reporters did.

Moran is an irresponsible bum who just recently babbled idiotically that "the economy has recovered" on the Chris Mathews show.

Now Moran is making mindless blanket statements without citing any data, evidence or where, when, who what. The problem is there are dozens if not hundreds of Morans in Congress.

Posted by: NAuchi | June 29, 2010 1:43 PM | Report abuse

Moran is clueless. Go on and look at the bills passed. The majority are passed in direct opposition to the support for the bills. HR1388 had 10% support - it passed. You are forcing taxes and regulations on Americans that don't want it. It is not Beck and Rush. They merely are venting what the majority are feeling. Attacks on the first and second amendments are growing by leaps and bounds. Americans hate tyranny. Stop taking our freedoms and we'll stop protesting - but then the dictator in charge is acting like Chavez.

For Moran to link these incidents, (that happen every time there is a census) to Rush Limbaugh and GB is idiotic. Hey Jim, I guess it is easier trashing radio talk show hosts then your usual targets, Israel, insurance companies and anyone who earns a decent living. For you voters in the 11th district, pay close attention to Rep. Moron, this is what Gerry Connolly is going to look like in a few terms if you do not vote for Keith Fimian and make Connolly a one term congressman. Are voters in Alexandria that lost to vote this guy back in every 2 years, or is it they just don't pay attention.

The attacks are a direct result of anti-Obama bashing, racist, bigoted GOP and t-baggers, palin, beck, faux, right-wing trash radio, the religious-right.

Moran is absolutely correct, and no amount of right-wing blather will change it.

..And Mr. Moran, this is why we have open borders that your party will answer to in not the two distant future. Know you are proud of your colleague!!

For over seven years I have been working on a study by the government on drugs, etc. Job requires home visits and, initually, similar information to the census. When the right wing started bombasting the air waves about the census, the threats to us went way up. These people believe that Obama is the anti-Christ, Muslim, etc. trying to destroy the country. My boss tells us it is no different than liberals fear of Bush, but anyone working with the public can see the violence. Just read the comments on the internet after almost any article. I fear for our county. And the poor Hispanics. No matter whether they are legal or not, they are terrified. I caught one woman's postman husband at home. She was born near the Mexican border in Texas so her English sounds Hispanic. She had been afraid to answer the door to us. And, believe me, we are an inoculous looking group. And this was before Obama was elected. It is far worse now.

Well, at least he didn't blame Bush. It's a start. Small baby steps for the "it's never my fault" democrats and the media. Did you ever think that people are mad at the pocket stuffing government in general and even madder now since the democrats, always the biggest pocket stuffers on the block, are in office. But no, now it's Rush's fault.

while this article makes light of this growing trend i see many ugly deja vu moments from the sixties when i was young...communists under every bed has simply morphed into facists, nazis, and socialists and is opined from a majority in the age group that is collecting ss and medicare and still scream about govenment intrusions...then there are the younger ones who love to play armchair commandos with deadly weapons (and a lot of geezers also)...the southern poverty law center has been warning of this atmosphere for years which seems to have escalated to a steroid pace since obama's election just like it did when clinton was elected..and now they have a well-paid mega-millionaire class of media wonks urging it between the lines you can tell o'keefe thinks that reaction is juat a "chicken little" reaction-comical at best
.. i linked to the carol morello article and you - sir - plucked carefully one sentence from the two pg article to prove your pt (or make fun of moran)when the entire article rebuts it...sorry-your whole article(blog, whatever) comes off as just snarky enough to get read...only one set of words come to mind: edward r murrow building
