Baltimore Census worker killed while on duty

By Carol Morello

By The Post's Carol Morello
A Baltimore man who was working for the Census has died after being shot while dropping off a co-worker, in the first killing of a U.S. Census Bureau worker on the job this year.

Spencer Williams, 22, died last Friday after being shot June 7, according to Baltimore police. He was found inside his car, resting in the median near an intersection, and had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

Williams was a crew leader responsible for a group of census takers who are doing follow-up visits to homes of people who did not mail in their questionnaire by April. Census Bureau spokesman Steven J. Jost said Williams was returning home after driving a co-worker home at the end of the day, and was considered to still be on the job. Police and census officials said the shooting is not believed to be related to any census field work.

Since the census began making follow-up house calls in late April, there have been 252 incidents in which census workers have been harmed or threatened. That includes 11 times when shots were fired at them, and 86 times when they were threatened with weapons such as guns, axes and crossbows.

A hell of a country we have here, when doing your job could get you killed. Ya gotta love it.

Census workers deserve "combat" pay...

Wow, in 2010 I'm reading comments like this. We are still a nation of small minded people that judge by skin color and not by individual personality. It's appalling!!

I know I read something before about White kids in VA running Drug Rings and everything. So DONKEYS you can case blame wherever you want but everyone does crime. DONKEYS

"Census workers deserve combat pay" is true but for different reasons. I served a 6 week stint as an enumerator and a more dysfunctional, mismanaged group than the Bureau of Census is hard to imagine.

If a census worker shows up on your doorstep and you don't want to be bothered, why wouldn't you say "No Thank you" and just close your door. Why the need for threats and worst?

I applied for the Census job, but was never called. I missed one question on the test, but as a former US government worker, thought that I would be called.

Silly me, I guess that my age, and race worked against me.

So there have been 252 known incidents for which Michelle Bachman and the Republican Party which condoned her bear at least some responsibility.

And these people think that we should put them in charge again??

Someone was killed and is gone from his family, friends, his co-workers and us. That's all this tragedy is about. We have All lost a young man doing his job. That is sad and a great loss. Please look at what we have- a beautiful country for All of us and an opportunity to pray another person working like this will not suffer such a death. His death affects all of us- no matter who we are. Not realizing that is sad. This is not a time for anger at each other. That accomplishes nothing for him or his memory.

Pretty much the last line of work where you'd expect to hear someone say, "Today, I got attacked with a crossbow."

If this death is not related to the man's job, why the headline?

We have thousands of mean, evil, sadistic people in America and they kill without conscience. They come in every color, creed and
station in life. Come to Baltimore and you will witness senseless murders every single day and little real justice. I am sorry for this young man's life that was taken from him. He is one of thousands for whom the promise of
safety and justice means little. Census workers are important to our states as they determine how many representatives we will have in Congress. When you have insane Congressmen and women telling their constituents not to open their doors to the census takers, this contributes to the paranoia now rolling through our country.

As any respectable gun-nut will tell you, the victim was shot by someone who was merely exercising his Second Amendment right, as bravely supported by the NRA.

Hey, the shooter probably felt threatened by the census worker!

Now let's get over it, and move on with our lives.

252 threats to census workers. Worse than sad. All those nutcases who advocate smaller government and right to bear arms and individualism - tear down the establishments and your children can grow up like the Lord of the Flies. Once you elminate the supposed evil of government, enjoy the solitary fight as you suffer the violence of the gang mentalities. But that's okay - you have your guns - just like the tribal groups of the rest of the world who manage to slaughter each other daily.
And ... many census workers are just underemployed hard working Americans who don't want to take welfare and prefer a job.

Thanks to the GOP with their mailing of phony census forms, the right wing for their constant streams of hate against the government, and Limbaugh/Beck for their constant stream of "government conspiracy" BS. Perhaps we need to see a different headline and a different set of victims.

Wow...last time I checked, Baltimore was in the North...so there goes the typical liberal "white southern bible thumping racist gun lovers" argument. However, good news for Obama!!! Another job opening became available so his employment numbers for June will increase!!!

I think you'd better check again, because Maryland's Northern border is the Mason-Dixon line that separates the North form the South, and Maryland was a slave-owning state before the Civil War. If you'd lived in the Western part of the state, you would not question whether it was part of the South. I saw fewer Stars and Bars growing up in Tennessee than I did living in Maryland.

Blaming Limbaugh, Beck the NRA, what a joke. Liberals hate REAL AMERICANS of all races. Spineless democrats who defend criminals and wonder why they act in such a brazen fashion like the career criminal who shot the policeman in PG County. Regarding the a prior by perp Williams...

"County police spokesman Maj. Andy Ellis says Williams tried to fire at Adey, who is still on the force, on New Year's Day. A grand jury indicted Williams, but the charges were "nolle prossed," and the charges did not go forward."

Liberals refuse to enforce laws against perps who use illegal guns. Instead they want to take guns from real citizens.

Sorry liberals, the violence in society is the blood that is on your hands. You coddle these criminals, you are responsible for their behavior. A black man today is safer at a Klan meeting than on his front porch in S.E. Washington or Baltimore.

The absolute worst organization in the federal government. It has always been and old boy network and a political football for those 535 idiots on Capitol Hill.

What evidence is there that this was directed at a census worker and not just a crime of opportunity.

None.

They send kids into bad neighborhoods, this is what happens.

I've lived near downtown Baltimore for two years. It's a pretty crummy place, but the good people of the city remain hopeful that positive change will occur.

simple
They are basically paid to count people who either don't want to be counted, or who don't have the wit to simply fill out and return the census form. Say that's 10% of the US population. That's 30 million people. What are the odds that in that 30 million are a few-hundred idiots who actually use physical harm on census-takers?

"He was found inside his car, resting in the median near an intersection, and had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, police said."

Oh, dear. I hate to come off like the Grammar Police, but the error here is not only annoying and unsettling, it is - albeit inadvertently, I'm sure - disrespectful to the tragic victim.

Is it really too much to expect that a publication like the Post monitor its staffers' writing - or editing? The above sentence, as written, states that the deceased census worker was found "resting", when in fact he was mortally wounded and undoubtedly in grave distress.

Grammar and Syntax 101, folks: Once a subject (person or thing) is established within a sentence, the subsequent phrases, without more, describe ("modify") THAT subject. Mr. Williams was found inside his car, WHICH WAS resting in the median near an intersection.

Between stupidity like that and the fear being fed to those less-then-bright people day after day after day by the likes of showmen like beck and rushbo and palin, is anyone really surprised? The fact that they are making millions of the ignorance and fear of those Americans shows they have no morals or patriotism whatsoever.

Fear and ignorance are a powerful combintation, responsible for many tragedies large and small throughout the history of the world.

Only an idiot would type "all REAL AMERICANS"; sorry but NO ONE - NOT EVEN CARIBOU BARBIE - HAS THE RIGHT TO SAY WHO IS "REAL".

In this case, we thinking people know the idiot means Democrats.

Stupid is what is killing my country. Way WAY too many stupid scared people walking around.

It is a sad state of affairs when a man can't even be safe at work. I hope that the person that committed this terrible act is caught and put in front of a firing squad.
