Lady Gaga going to Maine to rally against 'don't ask, don't tell'

Lady Gaga plans to visit Maine on Monday in an effort to convince the state's two Republican senators to vote to repeal the law banning gays from serving in the military.

Gaga will rally with fans and opponents of the law on Monday at Deering Oaks Park in Portland, near the campus of University of Southern Maine. The pop star announced her travel plans via Twitter on Sunday night.

She last week used MTV's Video Music Awards to announce her support for repealing the law and urged her fans to contact their senators.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Tuesday plans to hold a cloture vote on the annual Defense appropriations bill, which includes language repealing the law that bans gays from serving in uniform. The law is enforced with use of the so-called "don't ask, don't tell" policy put in place by Bill Clinton by executive order in 1993.

Reid still lacks the 60 votes necessary to get cloture, according to advocates for and against repealing the law. Maine's senators, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, have yet to announce how they plan to vote.

But they may vote against cloture to protest Reid's plans to add an immigration-related amendment to the defense bill. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and others have blasted Reid, saying unrelated amendments should not be added to the bill setting military policy.

Gaga on Monday will join representatives of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, a legal group assisting troops impacted by the law.

"We need Sens. Snowe and Collins on board; they're key to us breaking the filibuster," said SLDN Executive Director Aubrey Sarvis.

"All New England senators, indeed all 100 senators, Democrats and Republicans, need to engage in a real debate on this issue, and not just posture and spin this week over procedure and Senate rules," Sarvis said.

I'm glad to see that Gaga is standing up for equality. We need more people that will take a stand for equality for freedom of expression. I'm glad that she's making her voice heard on this issue. Let's all stand up for equality. America was built on the idea that all people deserve equality. Let's keep the idea alive.

In the name of equality give lady Gaga a uniform and a rifle. Send her door to door fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan
If she survives her first few days ask her who she wants protecting her for the next 2 years, a troop of Perez Hiltons. Or the hero’s who are already there.

If you have not served, you do not know. Shut the He77 up!

She needs to enlist and do a couple of tours in Iraq or Afghanistan, then she can have a real opinion.

Typical response from the Tea Party drones.

It not necessary to serve in bogus wars to hold an opinion. Palin, Limbaugh, Paul, O'Donnell, Angle, and Beck never served, yet they hold strong opinions. Nobody critcises them. Oh, I forgot, Palin has a son who served, so she reminds us, so I guess, vicariously, she has a valid opinion.

Homophobes, get a life.

At least she is standing up for what is right.

Not one single person, when they needed my highly skilled medical services after their legs, arms and other body parts were shattered asked whether I was gay or not. I imagine it did not matter to them because this gay person was saving their life.
It is only the close-minded perveyors of hate and bigotry who continue to espouse some actiquated idea of what THEIR military should be.

Well people, we are in two wars and with the remote concept of the GOP coming back into power, you can bet they will be looking to start a few more wars to make their rich constituents happy, just like Bush and Cheney did.
Be prepared to send you precious children off to die, because you will be keeping some of the most highly qualified men and women from serving their country.

Tell the policy is worth it when your child dies because he did not have an appropriate interpretor, or a surgeaon as skilled as many of my gay colleagues.

We have fought with distinction for many years and the outright homophobia displayed by the child-like simpled minded bigots of this country is beyond belief.

I mean, every other industrialized country in the world has gay servicemen and women and no second thought is given. IT is only the sexually repressed fake religious people in this country who feel the need to take freedoms away from people they don't understand or care to know.
I bet you run into doctors, mechanics, waiters and waitresses, bankers, mailmen, policemen, fireman, teachers all the time and don't give a second thought.

Would you be screaming for their heads and demand they be fired from their jobs because they are unworthy to hold the same job as yourselves.

Well if you do, here's to you and yours getting their behinds kicked in war. And while I hate to see anyone killed or injured in war, some people ask for it.

I'm currently on active duty, deployed twice in recent years. I'm straight, married with family, and not a homophobe. My opinion about DADT is mine alone, but who the heck really cares what Lady Gaga thinks about this (or anything else)???

Right, like she is intuned with current events. She is a poster child for moral turpitude and she wants to speak in behalf of your future heros? Hollywood and MTV host the most uneducated, easily influenced and most do nothing people. Let the people that listen to folks like Lady GAGA and that ilk, work it out amongst themselves, but leave the real humans alone. Geez! Where do these people come from.

Posted by: Bunkai1 | September 20, 2010 9:11 AM | Report abuse

I'm all for repealing the law but b4 they do that, someone better figure out how they will handle certain situations. For example, is it fair to make a straight soldier shower with someone who is gay? What about the rights of the straight person, do their rights no longer matter? I have no issue with people that are gay serving their country, but I do believe their are obstacles that need to be discussed prior to just repealing it but Lady Gaga, just shut up would you, your clueless opinion on anything other than music falls upon deaf ears.

Gaga is a mush mouthed moron who most of the time doesn't even know what she is saying. It's like listening to a schizophrenic. Apparently pleasing the homosexuals and the Gaga freaks is more important to Harry Reid and the DEMOCRATS than upholding the Military while it is trying to fight two wars simultaneously.

Mr. O'Keefe, if you are going to write about it, please get your facts correct. The so-called "don't ask - don't tell" law is not the law that "bann[ed] gays from serving in the military." Rightly or wrongly, gays were banned from serving in the military long before "don't ask - don't tell" was implemented during the Clinton administration. Again, rightly or wrongly, agree or disagree, "don't ask - don't tell" made it easier for gays to serve in the military. No longer were recruiters or anyone else permitted to ask a potential recruit or a serving member if he or she was gay. The fact that someone is "gay" does not prevent that person from serving in the military. The law prevents certain behaviors, but it does not prohibit the status of being gay and serving in the militay.

No one flame me about this post. I'm not making a value judgment as to whether the law is good or bad. I just tire of seeing inaccurate reporting.

I always love how the left winged loons comment on issues and don't know the facts about issues they are commenting on. Mr srljd has it right. Now to the real important topic.
Lady GaGa. Imagine your daughters mimicking everything Lady GaGa does and is. Nothing like a two-bit hoe to teach our children well.
As far as gays serving... They should be allowed to fight for their country.
Will they be ridiculed, Yes, but that's their choice.

Posted by: dbonade | September 20, 2010 11:25 AM | Report abuse

I'm currently serving active duty in the army and there are already gay people in the military. If we repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell nothing will change, our service members will just be able to be open about whom they are without being forced to lie in order to keep their job. It is isn't fair that straight service members are able to display photos and talk about their loved ones in the open if they can't. The military attracts a certain type of people. It will not be overrun with hair dressers and interior designers. Fraternization rules will continue just as they are. Gay service members will still not be able to hit on or ogle the same sex just as much as we can't do the same to the opposite sex. All Americans willing and able to serve should be allowed the same honor and be given the same respect, whether you agree with their lifestyle or not. They are putting their life on the line for their country and should not have to lie about whom they are.

they should bring back the draft and her and people like her have their names and numbers called up for active duty.oh yeah close all border crossings with canada.

To those who say Lady Gaga has no right to protest DADT because she has not served in the military:

1. The Constitution and Bill of Rights protect (or should protect) the right of ALL Americans and ALL Americans have the right to protest the actions of the government they consider unjust.

2. There are plenty of homosexuals in the military as has also been discussed above. Approximately 14k have been discharged b/c of DADT since 1993. However, the proud and honorable servicemembers who happen to also be homosexual are unable to publically protest DADT for fear of discharge. So.. who exactly is supposed to speak for them?

It's not about Lady Gaga, her music, her clothes, or her public behavior. Your right and ability to protest, vote, or act politically has very little to do with how many beers you had during a football game and whether or not you help little old ladies cross the street. In this instance, she is acting as a citizen of the United States of America and exercising her rights. Good for her.

Who cares what this man thinks. She's like the male crossing dressing wannabe version of Madonna.

Posted by: Cryos | September 20, 2010 12:37 PM | Report abuse

So if they repeal DADT male service members are allowed to shower with women correct?

Please explain the difference when you froth at the mouth screaming no.

You want acceptance not tolerance. Nasty at the end of your post too wishing death on people who don't agree with you.

I hate to break it to you but you have flawed genetics. That is nothing to celebrate. Your deviant behavior is not normal; boohoo waahhhh go cry some more.

This is specifically to rexreddy and nuke. I'm pretty sure that she wouldn't be able to meet the physical requirements of being in the military, but that is not the issue in this article. She is trying to gain support to overturn a law that doesn't allow openly gay people to serve in the military. These are people that are trying to fight for their country. It shouldn't matter whether they're gay or not. That is what she is fighting for.

Ever notice how those that are clueless are those that have the most to say about what they are clueless about? GaGa (far from a "Lady")should do a USO Tour, not a real tour, so Muslums can explain to her just what freaks and homosexuals mean in-country. Not telling is protectionism, not homophobia, but how could the clueless know?

I'm assuming she'll be the next dumboturd candidate for POTUS. After all, a total void of experience didn't keep them from putting our current buffoon in office.

I do really care what Lady Gaga thinks about everything. She has great legs, so when she speaks I and the rest of the world should listen up. We need good leaders like her, I sure wish she would weigh in on Big Foot and the Loch Ness Monster. I wonder if she has seen Elvis? Thank you Lady Gaga, shine your light everywhere, lead us out of this darkness.

Why is this even news? This person is a rather immature individual, whose chief claim to fame is showing up almost nude at Yankee stadium and then wearin raw meat at some rather ridiculous hollywood event. Why would any rational person give a damn about what she does or thinks?

Lesbianism, homosxxuality, etc are all abnormal genetical/physical/psychological misconnects. Have been since the dawn of civilization. But no repeat no military or other similar organization should have that type of participant unless they are in units so designated for such. Ethical and moral conduct, Western Civilization variety, properly recognizes a medical/phsychological issue for what it is and acts accordingly.

it's not about Lady Gaga.it's about being the absolute best we can be in our schools, our homes and in our military. we need the best soldiers available. period. i say let the military decide. these are the people that live or die together. a party in the shower is pretty rare in a foxhole. a shower of mortars and bullets more likely. show me actual evidence that any group is detrimental to our military. then keep them out. if they add value, bring them in.

Homosexuality is a dead end road
It is not about family and the human spirit
It is about feeding the flesh
Their blood is upon them
For Lord God is Creator
He made them male and female
with specific purpose and intention
So called Lady? GaGa, Goo, Goo
Is immature and has not a clue about
what makes children healthy and sane
Children have a natrual right to be nurtured by a father and a mother
the two that come together as one
To produce children the family
The True Facts of Life
Don't Lie to the Children
Tell the Children the Truth
The Truth will Set You Free!

As the sun of the earth must rise
To give sustaining warmth, light and life
The son of man
Must rise
For he has a purpose too
To rise up and bring forth life
With all that God has given him
To honor and protect
To defend the blood of his offspring
To give and recieve this love
It takes a heterosexual
The blueprint of the Creator
You are heterosexual

God's Children

God's Children have lost their way
Jesus has very much too say
Will they listen
Those restless souls
Or will they go their own way
Loneliness, trouble and despair
They will meet at their will
But Jesus' Will shall never fail
To come and heal them
And bring them home

Praise Jesus!
Amen!
