Commerce Dept. workers excused Friday due to fire

Commerce Department employees who work in the Herbert C. Hoover Building in downtown Washington will be on administrative leave Friday and should telework, officials said early Friday.

The department's emergency personnel are still expected to report as normal, officials said.

D.C. Firefighters responded Thursday at about 8 p.m. to a small fire on the Hoover building's third floor. No injuries were reported, but the building was evacuated.

The Hoover Building is undergoing a massive multiyear renovation that has required employees to relocate to swing space mostly in the basement of the structure.

So which is it - are they on administrative leave or are they teleworking? They can't be on both simultaneously...

Well that just shows you how much management values telework... they think its the same thing.

Now how is someone going to telework if their computer is at work? When I worked for the gov't five years ago they gave all teleworkers a desktop to take home. What they really meant by telework is "We will tell everyone you are teleworking so that you can put 8 hours down on your timesheet and get paid."

You keep your desk top in the office running when you leave, then log on to it from your home pc via a secure virtual network.
