Pentagon's share of civilian federal workers decreases

By Ed O'Keefe

As some Republican congressional candidates continue to target federal workers while on the stump, we're continuing our occasional look at the size and scope of the federal workforce by combing through government statistics.

Today's focus: the Defense Department. It's the largest federal agency in budget and workforce, employing more than a third of the government's civilian workers. But the Pentagon's percentage of total federal civilian workers has dropped since the early 1980s, as this chart shows:

Remember, GOP proposals to cut federal pay and benefits or freeze federal hiring would spare the departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Veterans Affairs and most corners of the intelligence community, leaving little else to cut, in terms of budget and headcount.

Researcher Eric Yoder contributed to this report and graphic.

Everyone should start stocking up on ammunition. The politicians(republicans and democrats) at large are going to do a Jimmy Carter to our national defense and cut it till it is no longer a viable threat to those that wish to see this nation destroyed.

Arm your selves for we will be attacked again. And there will not be a national defense left to thwart the attackers.

Generals and Majors ah ah
they're never too far
from battlefields so glorious
out in a world of their own
They'll never come down
till once again victorious..
Generals and Majors always
seem so unhappy 'less they got a war..
Generals and Majors ah ah
like never before are tired of being actionless.

We need the is the Military, what we don't need is Government that dos'nt do anything but collect millions from foreigners an big business. They are an albatross not needed any longer. They are iresponcible to the americans an not fixing anything that needs fixing like our cities need to go back to work an fix water pipes an sewers need to be fixed. These are far more important than padding the pockets of elite rich.

I have no idea what JWTX means.

However, if you're going to count the number of civilian employees in the Department of Defense, you have to include the number of contractors that support the military. You can't simply say there's a job to be done and it's being done not by the uniformed military or the civil service/political appointee leadership, but by an unknown number of other people. If there's DoD jobs being done by people, those numbers need to be included.

JWTX - are you a product of public education? If so, I see why you're so angry at the government. You were ripped off!!! Write English much?

Quite obviously you are the child here. You don't remember Jimmy Carter and what he did to the military.

So dumb f. If I'm old enough to remember Jimmy Carter as president. Quite obviously I am old enough to be working now and getting ready to retire. So liberal coward.

But quite obviously you are a liberal and have no clue about history. Shows the education you have had, rather it shows how little you care about history and how important it is.

Bet you loved sitting in the back of the short bus.

Well, this count is only civilian employees. How about the bloated upper staff of the miltary that is crawling through the wings wasting billions, using the revolving door to get into their corporate buddy system. P. Eisenhower warned about this, and it is exactly what the miltary turned into! Colonels, generals, adminrals ALL get a decent pension when they retire. CUT THEM OFF from the miltary complex machine of wealth after they retire!
