Top Marines pledge to 'step out smartly' to repeal 'don't ask, don't tell'

By Ed O'Keefe

Gay rights leaders are praising the nation's top Marine for setting a positive, proactive tone as the military prepares to end enforcement of "don't ask, don't tell," despite his previous warnings that openly gay troops could lead to deadly distractions.

Gen. James F. Amos, the commandant of the Marine Corps, has said that allowing gays to serve openly in the military could result in more casualties because openly gay troops on the battlefield could pose "a distraction."

But in a new video, Amos and Sgt. Maj. Carlton W. Kent, the Marine's top enlisted man, remind the rank and file that a change in policy is coming and they expect them to follow the new orders.

"The Marine Corps is a diverse force, and all have earned the privilege to wear the Eagle globe and anchor," Kent says in the video. "As Marines, we are confident you will continue to treat each other with dignity and respect. The commandant and I have trust in the great leadership of our Corps, from junior Marines to the most senior. As always, engaged leadership will be the key to implementation."

Later, Amos says: "I want to be clear to all Marines: We will step out smartly to faithfully implement this new law. It's important that we value the diversity of background, culture and skills that all Marines bring to the service of our nation. As we implement repeal, I want leaders at all levels to reemphasize the importance of maintaining dignity and respect for one another throughout our force. We are Marines, we care for one another and respect the rights of all who wear this uniform. We will continue to demonstrate to the American people that discipline and fidelity, which have been the hallmarks of the United States Marine Corps for more than 235 years, will continue well into the future."

A Defense Department survey released in November found that 58 percent of those in Marine combat arms units thought that repeal would negatively impact unit cohesion. About 48 percent of Army combat units felt the same way.

But overall, 70 percent of service members said they believe repeal would have little or no effect on their units.

The video shows that Amos "is keeping his promise to lead the implementation of openly gay and lesbian service personally," said Aaron Belkin, executive director of the Palm Center, a California think tank that specializes in gender, sexuality and the military. "The General's statement is unambiguous that he 'value[s] the diversity' of all Marines, whether they are straight or gay."

Fred Sainz, vice president of the Human Rights Campaign, said "It's heartening that in our Democracy, military leaders may disagree but they do not hesitate to implement the laws passed by our elected leaders."

Despite his warnings, Amos said last year that he wouldn't resist if Congress passed legislation ending enforcement of "don't ask, don't tell," and vowed that the Marines would "get in step and do it smartly."

Detailed plans on how each of the services plans to train troops about the end of the gay ban are due by Friday to Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates. Senior military leaders said late last week that training will begin in February with the goal of ending the ban by the end of the year.

I am always amazed at the esteem that Gen. Colin Powell is held in even though he has actively defied the better nature of this nation, first in his soft coup against Clinton when he refused to obey Clinton on DADT and then when he fed us that story at the UN about Iraq. And this guy can still get speaking and commentary gigs, making millions? What do you have to do in the US to finally have people realize that you're a no good liar? Condi, Rummy, W., Cheney... They all belong in prison, with Powell there along side them.

hey, guys, too late and it won't be going back as the healthcare reform likely will. anyone who's too nervous about gayness is 'nervous in the service' and will not fare well in the face of a real enemy. and caesar was at best bisexual, as was alexander the great... and look at those guys empires. in fact, caesar ordered his men when on long campaigns to do wifely duties for one another...

though for the life of me i don't understand why gays want to join murder, incorporated, and go kill innocent civilians in illegal, insane wars and torture chambers for a demonic, degenerate government like this one always has been... ask any sioux or cherokee. not many left, eh?

HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO POINT OUT THAT A HOMOSEXUAL WHO CLAIMS TO HAVE A "SEXUAL ORIENTATION"- CAN NOT SHOW WHERE OR HOW THAT PERSON GOT HIS/HER "ORIENTATION"! THERE ARE ALL SORTS OF PEOPLE WITH VARIOUS ORIENTATIONS, AND MANY OF THESE "ORIENTATIONS"(DESIRES) ARE AGAINST OUR LAWS!
SOME HAVE THE DESIRE TO ROB BANKS,MOLEST CHILDREN,HAVE SEX WITH ANIMALS,OR MARRY A FAMILY MEMBER, AND WE DISCRIMINATE AND SAY, "NO,OUR SOCIETY DOESN'T ALLOW THAT!"
BUT THE HOMOSEXUALS (A 2 OR 3% OF OUR POPULATION) HAVE PUSHED AND CLAMORED FOR OUR ACCEPTANCE OF THEIR DISGUSTING, DISEASE SPREADING SEXUAL ACTS-TO THE POINT THAT OUR MAJOR LEADERS, COURTS, AND NOW OUR ELITE MILITARY ACTUALLY BELIEVE AND ACCEPT THESE RIDICULOUS CLAIMS!
BILLIONS OF OUR TAX DOLLARS ARE SPENT ON THE ATTEMPTS TO CURE, OR AT LEAST SLOW DOWN THE AIDS HOLOCAUST.
TELL THE TRUTH- SODOMY IS WHAT IT IS- AN UN-NATURAL SEXUAL ACT AND A SIN!

Okay let me start things off by saying this. Are people now a days so stupid as they go doing the "i'mma point fingers at you but not realize my sides faults as well!"

@lyn3 Everything you just said about gays molesting, rob banks, marry animals, and marry family members can be said for the straight roles. Yes. Straight. Definitely robbing banks. How many times to you hear of gay people robbing banks? Rarely if not never. Stop being a hypocrite please. Also let me throw down some facts and questions.

Question 1: Can you tell me when you "chose" to be straight? Because most people will say that they just came to the realization that they was straight when they found girls cute at a very young age. It was naturally. Gays are the same, except they normally cant tell since their growing up with the thoughts that you have to be straight. So the feelings lay dormant a little longer, some don't.

Fact: Millions of dollars are being wasted on something like stopping gays from marrying and entering the military. 2. 5 million was lost annually for have DADT. I wonder how many jobs we could have made with that money.

MILLIONS are being spent to send DVD's out to familys about this "curse" on society by churches and millions are being spent to fight something that if allowed can bring jobs to our country. So again lets look at the facts. You guys are wasting TAX PAYERS money in fighting this constantly. Instead of repeating rumors you heard, go do a bit of studying

Fact: In case you dont believe me about gay marriage bringing jobs to our states, read this. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/04/us/04marriage.html (copying and pasting the last part to make more of an effect)

"City officials say the measure will also provide a financial boost to the local economy. A study by the Williams Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, predicted that more than 14,000 same-sex marriages would occur in the city over the next three years, which would bring in $5 million in new tax revenue and create 700 jobs."

And yes this can make a lot of sense when you think about the number of people getting married, means they have to pay for receptions, outfits, ceremony, rings, marriage papers, the works.

@tazdelaney As for you, let me say this. Many gays serve in the military and our or best men's. Don't go along the stereotype and think gays are girly push overs, when in fact a nice amount of masculine and just as good as straight males. A nice amount of the time you wont even be able to tell them apart. And thats an absolute fact.

So all in all tell me this. Whoever is reading this. Do you want to listen to someone who spews stuff out of nowhere, or do you wont to listen to a sensible person who actually studies and can point out the facts of things?

http://www.fda.gov/biologicsbloodvaccines/bloodbloodvaccines/bloodbloodproducts/questionsaboutblood/ucm108186.htm

Men who have had sex with other men at anytime since 1977 (the beginning of the aids epidemic in the United States) are currently deferred as blood donors. This is because MSM are as a group, at increased risk for Hiv, hepatitisB and certain other infections that can be transmitted by transfusion

This policy is not unique to the United States. Many European Countries have recently reexamined both the science and ethics of the Lifetime MSM deferral and have retained it (see the transcript of the FDA workshop on Behavior Based donor Deferrals in the Nat Era for further information)

This decision is also consistent with the prevailing interpretation of the European Union Directive2004/33/Ec Article2.1 on donor deferrals

See heres another thing.

@Boski66 Why do people tie in gay rights with abortion? We are not connected in any way! If some of the people who support gay rights support abortion thats one thing, but stop tying the subject together when its not one in the same!

Also as for the links, I'll call them bogus. The link about the Homosexual Sabatog has no basis. if you could cure it through therapy then why does it always have harmful psychological effects? Unless you was straight, had a bad boyfriend or girlfriend experinced and announce "I'm going to be homo!" Its not a choice. And heres the thing, most of those who do that go right back to being straight a month or two later. Why? Simple, deep down they cant hide their sexual orientation! They was born straight, they cant be gay or bi!

Same goes with gays. They will go straight only to go back to being gay because they cant do it. It goes against their nature.

Now again with facts

Fact: Did you know, there has been several studies done on gay parenting, and all the results say the same thing. Same sex couples can raise a kid just as well as their heterosexual peers. And sometimes a little better, only because their more accept. That's it. Don't believe me look at this. Straight from the childrens mouth. http://www.ppsis.cam.ac.uk/CFR/news/documents/StonewallReport.pdf

Well here we go again!!!. The Marines always seem to find reason
why they should not comply to changes that are being made. It is
so like what they did when President Truman desegregated the Armed Forces. It is very similar to the reasons why Black Marine
should be kept apart from White Marines. Gays have always been in the military. They do not go looking for people who they
know are not like them. As long as they are capable of doing their jobs. that should be enough. They made it difficult for Black Marines to make rank, before the system changed to be fair to all. And before I hear all of the abuse from some of you:
I am a spouse of a Retired Marine, have been there and seen happen what I am speaking about
.

I said in an earlier post that I thought Gen. Amos should either do his job or resign. I am most pleased to see that he is doing his job. This demonstrates that he is a true patriot for our country.

We don't have to LIKE everything that goes on around us; we merely need to do what is right and called for in any situation, without whining or complaining about it.

Gen. Amos made a great call here, for himself, the Marine Corps, and the USA.

I wish him all the best for the future!

I am very proud of the Marine Corps - both in stating their position in an honest and straightforward manner and in doing their duty with honor and integrity.
