Metro Responds on Escalators, Parking

Those of us who cover transportation for The Post have left some questions hanging during our Live Online discussions, so I thought I'd pass along some answers we've gotten.

During Roads & Rails with Eric Weiss and Lena Sun on Monday, a reader wanted to know Metro's official policy for bikers if a rail station has a broken elevator. Can they take the escalators?

Lena said she talked to Metro spokesman Steven Taubenkibel, who told her that official policy would be that bikers should go to next station with a working elevator. Metro doesn't want people with bikes using the escalators for safety reasons, envisioning a bad outcome for other passengers if a biker lost hold on a bike and it fell down the escalator.

(That part seems reasonable to me, but I know a lot of Metro customers wish the system had a better way of alerting them to the staus of the elevators before they begin their journey. Not everyone can look at Metro's online alerts first.)

In my Dr. Gridlock Live Online last week, a reader said:
"I have a reserved sticker and park in the reserved section of the Shady Grove garage each day. The number of people without stickers who park there seems to be getting out of hand, and sometimes makes it very difficult for me to park if I don't get there until fairly close to 10 (when the reserved status ends)."

Taubenkibel told me that Metro Transit Police know about that particular problem and will enforce the rules. So Shady Grove parkers, let me know what you see.

Taubenkibel also had a request. You all know that Lena, who covers transit issues for The Post, and I get a lot of questions about situations on the trains and buses. Taubenkibel and the other members of Metro's public information unit respond to many of our questions, but they ask for as much information as we can possibly provide: rail line, Metrobus route, the direction, time of day and location, for example.

Metro has taken it's concern for passenger safety to absurd levels. From this bogus assumption of an unacceptable risk of someone dropping a bicycle to the aircraft landing pattern-like distances between stopped trains, it's a wonder the system works at all.

Wow, they allow bikes on Metro. Great, now if the elevator at East Falls Church doesn't work, I'll just ride my bike on I-66 to get to a station where it does work.

Passenger safety if a bike falls...shouldn't that fall to the bike owner in that case? And isn't there more of a safety issue when these "logically challenged" people try to push their way through a double-stacked line of people standing on a down escalator? Personally, I'll stand in their way because I don't want them pushing me.

I did have someone push me from behind at Metro Center trying to get me to move forward. I turned around and said, "Where do you want me to go? Use your head." The coup de grace (sp?), he missed the train that I got on because he tried to push his way through another crowd of people.
